Hi,
I had the same probs as all you guys have and tried a tip that another user mentioned already.
I tried all catalyst driver and no one helped me but than I took the small 3.10 cat (7,63 Mb) not the big one I tried before (22,xx Mb).
Try this for me it worked. Didn't have any freeze again, also Far Cry Beta that crashed every 5 mins now runs very fine!

The 7.63MB file is the driver itself. The rest is the control panel and Hydravision. So...maybe the problem isn't the driver per se, but one of the things bundled with it.

I'm going to reformat and then instal Win2K. I'm currently running Win98SE but I encountered a bizarre bug with My Documents that breaks file management (it took me 9 hours to track it down) and I decided to try Win2K rather than just restore from a recent Win98 SE image. May as well try it out.

I'll try installing the VIA Hyperion 4.51 drivers and see if I have the Radeon trouble again. If I do, I'll reformat and reinstall, then use the 4.35 drivers I'm currently using and see if that solves the problem. I'll post later and let you all know the results, assuming I can get my HCF chipset modem to work in Win2K.

Hi!
I recently had to reformat, and with the new cat 10s everythgin seems ok, bought cod and it ran the whole way through with everything basically cranked (i love q3 based engines on my old 1.2ghz cpu, i know!)...

What I wanted to say, was that I installed the oldest drivers for my motherboard I could find (I have a k7, and installed original software on cd that came with it, dunno what version, just OLD) and problem solved. So, could have either have been the new cats or keeping my mobo drivers old..... I have a feeling ati addressed many problems with the new drivers, still loads of people have problems. GET IT FIXED ATI

All I know is that cod runs beaute at 1280x1024 via RGB on my 17" flat panel.... ps 1/10 mbps internet, see ya next year when I emerge from my lair!....

Good luck guys

i think thats how drivers work... The drivers are basically the same, its just the tweaks and different settings in the control panel that make the performance different. Downloading the driver alone isnt really a good thing cuz you cant change any settings. Cat 4.0 is coming out soon so those of you with problems still just hold your breath and don't do anything too drastic like changing BIOS's which i don't recommend.

Hello Everybody, Just thought i would let everyone know.........the NEW CATALYST 4.1's are out right now. THey have also released a new control panel version 4.1. Remember to use the ati unistall utility first before installing the new drivers Here's a link for the utility.

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/misc/catalystutils.html

Plus the OMEGA drivers have been updated ( about 2 week ago) to OMEGA 3.10 if anybody is interested.
Here's some basic info on the new drivers....

ATI Catalyst 4.1
Version: 6.14.10.6414
Dated: 01/19/2004
Size: 8.2MB

ATI Control Panel 4.1
Version: 6.14.10.5071
Dated: 01/19/2004
Size: 12.5

Omega Catalyst 3.10
Version: 2.5.04 / 2.6.29
Dated: 12/21/2003
Size: 15.6 MB

Maybe these new drivers will help with some peoples problems.

Here's my 2 cents on this whole thing. When i first got my ATI 9600pro, the thing would barely work and every game i played had horrible artifacting. I screwed around with all of the AGP settings (fastwrite, smartgart, etc..) but nothing worked. It is a very early release of the card, so i figured a got a bad card and i was getting ready to RMA it. Then as a last ditch effort I upped the AGP voltage to 1.6v. I have never had to do this with any other video card, so i was slightly concerned that i might fry my card. But the increase in voltage makes my card run super stable and i haven't had any problems in months. I noticed a couple of posts back that someone didn't have the option to up the voltage on their AGP in their BIOS, I would say you are SOL. The voltage thing worked for me more so than any CAT or OMEGA driver and i have tried almost all of them. I even installed the new 4.1's today just for the hell of it even though ATI recommneds not to install new drivers unless you have issues with older ones. Oh well, everything works fine. Good luck to everyone.

for those of you that had their freeze problems solved with cat 3.10, i dont recommend going to cat 4.1. I lost 3-7fps going from 3.10 to 4.1.

Hello all.
I have follow this thread for some days and I hope for some answers.
I am not a hot knower in the hardware and such so I will post some questions and hope you can help me.

Hardware config.
Amd Athlon 1.4 Ghz.
Asus A7V266 (kt266 chipset)
Std DDR 184 pin memory 256 MB (266 Mhz)
Std DDR 184 pin memory 512 MB (333 Mhz)
Club 3 D Ati Radeon 9600 Pro 256 MB (version BK-ATI VER008.015.033.000)
300 W power supply.
(Yeah I know the machine is old :) Gonna buy a new one soon I hope : ) :)

First I tried the 4.51 4 in 1 bundle... + ATI bundle 22 MB didnt work. (Cat3.10)
2. I tried the 4.51 4 in 1 bundle... + ATI only graphic driver. cat 3.10 Didnt work
2b. I tried the 4.51 4 in 1 bundle... + ATI only graphic driver. cat 4.1 Didnt work
3. 4.43 + ATI only graphic driver. 3.10 Didnt work (Worked best. At this I could at least CTRL ALT DEL to get out, and not having to reboot with reset button)
3b. 4.43 + ATI only graphic driver. 4.1 Didnt work
4. 4.35 + ATI only graphic driver. 3.10 Didnt work
4. 4.35 + ATI only graphic driver. 4.1 Didnt work

I have a fresh new installation of windows 2k prof + Sp4+ all security hotfixes etc etc.
I have tried removing one of the memories and tested them 1 by 1 , still same problem.
Run the memtest30 ... no errors in the memories.
Turned of Fast Draw, had problems with VPU, bluescreens etc etc before I did a new fresh installation of an OS, found out the processor was getting to hot, fixed a new CPU cooler fan, nemas problemas now.

I play Everquest and I am getting crashes due to I don't know what. *grin*
I can crash whenever. I have enough cooling for the CPU and graphic card. But I can't find if I wanna increase the voltage for the card to 1.6 and try that option.

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do ?

Any answers that might help me I am very gratefull to get.

Thanks

Patrick

Hi everyone,

I have recently change my GeForce 3 for an ATI Radeon 9600 XT. After uninstalling my old card, I installed the Radeon. First problem, the installation CD doesn't want to work, so I got the last catalyst driver from ATI. But when I install them, my computer freeze when I log into my user account on windows XP. So I uninstall every and I decide to cheat. When Windows XP is detecting my new material, I browse where I unpack the driver I download from ATI and select the folder.

From there, everything seems to work just fine. The card seems correctly installed and I can install the ATI control panel without any more problems... until I try playing game. Any game I play, either Call of Duty, Final Fantasy XI or Star Wars Galaxies, freeze after between 5 and 15 min of game-play, sometimes less. When I got kick on desktop, I got a message saying that VPU recover has the reinitialize my graphic card because It wasn't responding. I have try various alternative, like using the Omega driver, but nothing change. I have update my motherboard driver, I have update Windows XP, to no result. I still have the same problem. If anyone has an idea...

Here my computer spec:

Athlon Xp 2200
Mother Via KT4 ULTRA
ATI Radeon 9600 XT (the ATI bundle)
Sound Blaster Live MP3
Dell LCD Screen 17 inch

I to am not a happy radeon 9600 pro camper.
I got a GeCube 9600 pro a couple of weeks before xmas as an early xmas present. It came with Catalyist 3.8.
It worked fine, my system was stable and my games which include Black Hawke Down, RTCW - ET, Deadley Dozen 2 among others all worked and looked great.
A week ago I got a copy of Call of Duty which just kept crashing with the Cat 3.8 driver ( will play in 640*480 res with every thing turned down).
So updated driver to Cat 3.10 and CoD played realy well, but nothing else worked. Xp was crashing on boot up, all my aps crashed and rest of games crashed, that was after 10 or so reboots just to get XP to load.
I got stripy lines, black screen, blue screen of death, system crashes, no signal to mon, you name it happened.
Tried every suggestion I could find and nothing worked, so have now reverted back to 3.8 driver.
I will try 3.9 and see if that is any improvement. If I see Scan Disk 1 more time I'll ....
Is it the bios like someone mentioned. According to the error reports for each driver, 3.8 uses bios version 0.2063 and 3.10 uses 8.015.
Any one have a clue as to whats going on. Do I need to update my Mother Board bios?
Shame on you ATI shame shame shame. This the first driver I have updated that is worse that the previous one and I have updated tons over the years.
So Cat 3.10 will run games like CoD, Haylo and other DX9 stuff but nothing else including windows XP, 3.8 is good but will not run CoD. ?????????

System info -

PCChips m810 series mother board.
AMD Athon XP 1700+ 1.46gh CPU.
T-Bird bios.
512MB pc133 ram.
GeCube radeon 9600 pro Graphics Card.
300w PSU

I've noticed a signifigant difference (in performance) from the 3.10's to the 4's. I installed them, and haven't changed a thing. Not a single crash. My settings default = AGP fastwrite off, AGP write ON. And I don't think I can turn on AGP fastwrites if I wanted to. Seems it's blocked.

Anyway.. no more freezes

Well i emailed ATI again and got a reply!!!!

Well it was pretty usless. It was pretty much what the said last time which was that it was a "system configuration" which was causing the crash. What i don't understand is how can it be when all my other games work???

Installed lastest drivers and age of empires 2 conquerors still doesn't work.

They gave me a whole bunch of links for other games, but it's nothing i haven't tried on this forum. The strange thing was if i still haven't resolved my problem, they didn't exactly where to go for further help.

This is getting really lame!! The responce even seemed computer genrated. Can someone get hold of age of empires 2 and see if it works on there system??

I played CoD which seems to be a problem on some systems....i never had a problem strangely. What is going on here?

>> Re: ATI 9600 pro problems hang freeze
Hi Guys this should help your ATI9600 problems: This is what the hardware technician done to my computer.

1st - First he checked if my motherboard had an AGP Controller Driver - I had it, Thank god! / The way to check it if u dont kno is to go to device manager/system devices and searched for AGP Controller. If you dont have it he said, its required by the CARD but he says its a recommendation to have it. If you dont have it you should be able to download it from your mainboard default site.

2nd - Since i previously had a nVidia card (Gforce4 Ti42008XAGP) that meant that i have have nVidia drivers installed. He asked me "Did you unninstall your old nVidia Drivers and nVidia Based Software/Programs?" I said "no". Then he goes on saying that your card will have many incompatabilities and problems such as Freeze "If you nVidia drivers are still intact". So basically he unninstalled the nVidia drivers and the nVidia tweaker based programs i have installed. (While he was doing this he also unninstalled all my ATI Drivers).
After that the system was nVidia Driver Free, then he installs my ATI drivers and downloads the latest Catalyst 10.0 since earlier versions dont have a great support for DX8.0 based games this catalyst would solve most of them problems.

3rd - He told me not to overclock the card as it requires heavy cooling to be stable.

4rth - I paid him $10 for 30mins of his time in the shop and i took it home with me.

OMG i was dying to test if my games C&C Generals/ZEROhour, UT2003, War3TFT, CS, TombRaider 6 would work fine. As before my C&C Generals game would freeze as i witnessed but bypassed the problems by lowering hardware acceleration. NOW Since everything has been installed right for the card and no incompatabilities. I played it for like 1Hour plus and nothing went wrong, I experienced no lag no freezing. ALL my other games worked fine as i had no more problems.

Solution to you problems guys, i Sudgest giving the instructions from above a TRY. PS you dont need anyone else to do it for u.
P.S if your mobo has its own Built In Graphics Accelerator, Refer to your Mobo manual on how to disable the device.

If your curious about my System setup this is what i had.

2x 512DDR400 @ Dual Channel
ATI Radeon 9600Pro

Thanks guys i hope i have helped someone!

Hi...

I have watched and read every single thread in here my eyes are burning from doing it :]

Anyway, I am running this configuration:

Ideq 200n
Nvidia Nforce 2
dual channel memeory 256x2
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro Atlantis
Seagate 80 gig
Sony Dru-510A
2800+ barton OC @ 3200+ Barton@ 2.2ghz
FSB @ 193x11

Since my mobo has a geforce MX 4 inbuilt initially i was having all sorts of problems. But aftr using some hacked drivers for the Nforce2 chip i was ok.

I don't know what version of drivers my cd has but I think they 3.8 catalyst. First install after i sucessfully disabled onboard graphics was a charm I could benchmark and play every game I installed. I then decided that it was time to OC my CPU FSB and that also went well.. no hick ups.
Now to the problem : I DL rage3d tweaker to see if i could overclock the card and right after installing the program it started freezing and playing ANY game just didn't work. So i uninstalled Rage3d but that didn't help either . Now I was p**sed (mostley cause I screwed with the functional drivers) so I went and got the new catalyst drivers 3.10 ..hoping that it would solve my problems. But I was deeply wrong.

this bitch card wasn't gonna beat me so I did everything possible upped AGP voltage (lowered it too) turned off fast writes and basically everything that has been suggested in here.
So eventually I was able to play and run 3dmark2001 with the COD patch that was released. But then my idiot brain decided to DL rage3d again to see if I could oC. Low and Behold... same s**t happened again.
Since I refused to lower ANY settings on this ( I shouldn't have to ) I was reinstalling and uninstalling basically three times a day....Eventually with the new 4.1 drivers I got it working again.

I have everything on Fast writes AGP 8 and so forth... on my first install of this card I got a score of 10500 on 32mark 2001 SE now I get 11600. On 3Dmark03 i get a score of 3500. Som im pleased but also very confused. I wish I could pin point the problem but unfortunately I cant.

just don't DL rage3d since it messed my drivers up.... :)

Oh and just so you u need to uninstall any benchmark progs after installing new drivers... I suppose this goes for games too. I was having problems with the new 4.1 drivers with 3dmark2001 SE also but after reinstalling the program it's ok.

Just a thought.

All my DX8.0 and 8.1 games run and look great with Cat 3.8. Infact I think RTCW - ET looks better than Call of Duty which is DX9 based. Even my DX7 games fook fantastic.
I just downloaded the Omega 3.10 driver so I will give that a go.

If you.. like me..have looked through this entire thread and tried every possible combination with no results, (and you have your warranty) do what i did.. force flash it with a incompatible bios and take it back to the shop and get a nice shiny asus geforce 4800ti oldies but goodies....
and never again stray from the safety of the nvidia fold..
