Don't get to focused on fast writes. That's only part of it. I needed to disable fast writes because windows icons became somewhat corrupted......most important nobody is talking about this !! Why haven't you (recent) people mentioned your results from trying the most important Smartgart trick ?? (Thank you again Matthias Noack) Either you haven't tried it or you don't think it's important ?? I know it worked great for me - but you (most recent) people are not clearly defining what does / does not work !!

Is it possible that asus p4p800 don't have in the bios the option to change the fastwrite or the agp speed?

I searched the net and read all the manual but can't find it. I disabled fastwrite using smartgart but it freezes the same way.

One thing, I play motogp2 and it don't freeze now I don't know if it don't freeze I have luck :) or because the game don't use mouse.

Nothing has worked for me. The problem must be with directx. I am running ver. 9.0b. When I run the diagnostics (DXDIAG), everything is installed and working properly. But then I run the ATI diagnostics in the ATI multimedia panel (check pc) and it says directx is not installed properly. Uninstalling, reinstalling, catalyst 3.7, nothing helps. Maybe reloading XP would do it...???...

My new FX5900 locked up also. LOL. But I fixed it. No it was not drivers for Nvidia, smartgart, the Mobo drivers or settings with AGP, or fast writes.

It was clocking settings on the motherboard.

I overclocked the AMD Athlon XP with these settings.
DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra Mobo
AMD XP 2500+
2 x 256 DDR PC3200
FX5900
Overclock settings
multiplier to 11 and the FSB to 220MHz
CPU voltage set to 1.950V,
Chipset voltage set to 1.70V, and
Memory voltage set to 2.70V.
The memory timings aggressive
memory clock was set to a 1:1 ratio
Getting 2420MHz

The locking went away and has not returned.

now guys. check this out.
if everyone or alot of people are having the same problem this must mean that it is infact a problem with the graphics card. we all run different pc setups. its not as if we all have similar pc's.
this is what did work!! all my games work... but i dont see it to be right.
i have an athlon xp 2600+ (sposed to run on 166FSB)
i can only run games stable when using a 133 FSB...
i dont get it. the radeon 9600 pro is a POS
athlon xp's are sposed to run at 2.80~ GHz
yet i can only play games stable at 1.6~GHz running on 133FSB.
this sucks.
i hate radeon 9600pro's!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys might want to try the following link for the Neverwinter Nights problem. I had the exact same problems as described previously in this thread. The solutions worked for me, so far without a crash.

http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=245308&forum=49

Specifically, the "#7 Radeon 9600" suggestion of disabling the hardware mouse cursor.

I solved my problems. Returned the ATI built 9600 Pro to Circuit City and picked up a PNY GeForce 5200 FX for $100 less. So far, no problems. Everything works.

Though the performance difference must be huge. The FX5200 is noticably slower then the Radeon 9600

I contacted EA games support over the weekend.. they said they will try to reproduce it in their lab today (why havent they done this before?). Anyway.. it seems odd its only the chipset drivers when some of us are running sis (I am) and others are running via. Its too bad.. generals expansion comes out today.. im about ready to get a new card from anyone but ati today and return my card.. not worth the hassle.. the support from ATI from what I hear on the prior 11 pages SUCKS...I think Im going to lose this card like a hot potato!

Hey!

I think I found a solution to all your troubles! I've had more or less the same problems as you with my 9600Pro card. I also managed to get it to work in 8X.

My MB is A7V600 and I had Plug-n-Play OS enabled. I disabled it and now I can run all the benchmarks and games that didn't work before. I hope this works for you too!

Koen Kwak, Yeah, compared to a properly working 9600 Pro, I am sure there is a performance difference. Compared to the one that was in my machine, though, the difference is night and day, in favor of the geforce. And this machine is for my youngest, 15 year old, son and he is happy. Is that disabling of the PNP fix for real? Ive noticed also a lot of people here using athlons as this one is. Any connection?

Hey all, I have similar problems with my board. However, I could not disable the Fast Write option on my mobo (windows wouldn't load if its disabled!). I have the Catalyst 3.6 drivers for my ATI card (7000). My system specs follow:

Motherboard: GA-7VAXP (Revision 1.1)
Memory: Micron's Crucial 512MB PC3200
Video: ATI Radeon 9600 AIW - 128 MB DDR
PSU: 400W Hercules
HardDisks: Western Digital 40GB + 8MB Cache, Seagate 20GB
Operating System: W

Eric Lewerenz> Yes. The disabling of the option for PnP OS in my BIOS really solved my problems.

So all you that has this problem I really recommend you to try this.
