I too am having troubles with the saphire radeon 9600 pro. Only the game I am having trouble with is UT2k3. Randomly the screen turns black and all I hear is the last sound produced by the game repeating over and over again. here are my specs.

I bought myne online, and it has been to long to send it back. And about going and getting a 9800pro, not very many of us can afford that. I sure as hell can't. If you have the money to get a 9800pro, why did you waist your time with a 9600pro? I am just curious. I wouldn't of even thought of anything else.

Ryan is right! I too bought mine online and probably it is way to late to return it. I am thinking about researching about it though. But it's probably more hastle than anything! So.....Please help us with this issue. I still am unable to play counterstrike in OpenGL mode, everytime I do I get to the Loading screen and then recieve an error report. Can anyone else test counterstrike and see if they get the same problem. I am going to be getting the Half-Life cd in the mail soon, then I will install the MOD version of CS and see if it still does it! So if anyone can help me please post some answers damnit :)

at the time i went to get my 9800 they had none in stock.
and the 9600 was cheap. i got it for 300 AUD so i thought why not.
because i mean it does the job.
but yeah.
i know the 9800 is 300 dollars more
and no i couldnt really afford it, but just save a little longer :\
but im happy to say ill still help with this 9600pro issue, becuase its not on. we shouldnt have to be finding ways to make the dam thing work. when it comes out the box into ur pc with a disk with drivers. thats it
ur done
u get on your way with no probs. i have sent an e-mail to ati and am awaiting a response.

I've been having the same video card problems and yes victoria, there is a santa clause; I've found the solution. Trying every workaround on this post, nothing worked. (My system would crash when even doing anything, the start menu would crash it for God sakes.) I had finally set my main board to a 266fsb instead of 333fsb.

Windows XP Pro
AMD 2700
Mach Speed V333U board (VIA)
DirectX 9.0b
Kingmax 2x256 PC2700 333
latest via 4 in 1 drivers
latest catalyst drivers

I believe the problem itself lies inherently in the compatability of the card with the motherboard. Maybe future drivers will fix this maybe not. Everything is rock solid now, butr my frame rate is slightly choppy. Does anybody know of a good 400fsb amd board that IS compatable with this confounded Radeon 9600 pro? It almost makes me sick to think that i'm losing 67mhz of fsb just to make that card work.

good work chuck !!

on my previous post (kt3 ultra aru - kt333) i failed to mention that i am using pc2100 (266) ram which is consistant with your finding.

in any case - i also had to do the SmartGart thing todo what Noak suggested, otherwise C&C generals would hang:

1.) Disable "AGP FastWrite" in the BIOS
2.) Browse to your folder, where you installed the ATI Control Panel
3.) Execute file: SmartGard (this is a link)
4.) Do following settings (no matter what the auto-detection says!):
PCI Write: ON
PCI Read: ON
AGP Write: OFF
AGP Read: ON
5.) Apply
6.) automatic restart and after that WAIT some seconds because during windows logon, the driver tests your system
7.) SmartGard starts automatically and you have to confirm the new settings with "OK"
8.) Have Fun!

Are you able to play C&C Generals without the Noak changes??

i would be really p**sed off right now if i wasn't so exhausted. i've tried everything i can think of to get my sapphire 9600 pro working, including all the suggestions from this thread, to no avail. for the last several days i've ripped my computer apart and put it back together several times, formated my hard disk 6 times, tweaked every relevant BIOS option one-by-one, tweaked every relevant windows option one-by-one, changed all kinds of voltages, over- and under-clocked my hardware, and i just can't stop it from crashing after a few minutes in any 3D application.

if i can't make this work running on a clean-as-a-preacher's-sheets installation of windows xp sp1, with every damn line of code from the OS to the drivers to my applications up to date, how the hell is the joe schmo supposed to make his work?

if it's a video card issue, why didn't catalyst 3.7 fix the problem? if it's problem with via chipsets, why didn't hyperion 4.49v fix the issue? if so many people are having this problem, why isn't anyone at ati, via, or any of the game makers even acknowledging this problem? this card has been out for a while now. they've had plenty of time to identify (let alone fix) major bugs.

all i really want is official confirmation of what we all know is a serious problem with the radeon 9600 pro. even if they can't tell me WHY it's happening, it'd be nice to hear them acknowledge THAT it's happening.

i wish the solution was as easy as taking the card back for a refund, but unfortunately i can't afford anything more than a radeon 9600 pro and anything less is a waste of money (in my opinion).

Check this out! I have the 9600 PRO Sapphire Radeon 256mb. I put in my 32MB 7000 Radeon and it worked. I can play cs in openGL and I can play steam too. NO CRASHING. Its that stupid ass card. I have an iwill board, i'm gettin msi for RDRAM. SO maybe the board would have better luck with the card, if not....well I'm going to sell it! If anyone want's it let me know!

Ryan Boehning, what are your system specs. i got my radeon 9600pro to run everything but had to sacrifice cpu speed. nearly 500Mhz.
so spam ur sys specs and ill look at it.

That's wierd, my Radeon 9600Pro has never froze, except when i overclocked it once too much. Could it be the manufacturer? Or the driver, I am still using 3.2...

i believe that Ati made a bad batch of radeon 9600pro's. they knew this at the manufacturing process but continued to package the cards. thats is why they are not responding to e-mails or just blaming it on the config of our pc's.
we really should do something about this. but who can be stuffed?
not me lol
we could get like free top of the line radeon cards til we die :D if we won

i have NEVER seen a piece of hardware that &^*^*&^& me off like this. so heres my fun little romance with this card that i've not yet seen mentioned.

im running a (well NOT running)
win 98 (i Like 98)
p3 933 on a Vega-V6941 m.board (VIA82C694X chipset)
512k ram (133)
250w atx power
and (of course) ati radeon 9600 pro.
and ive been privy too all sorts of locks, freezes. and random reboots....
or not so random.
forget trying to run any GAMES on this thing, i cant get it to run WINDOWS.
after boot, if im lucky, i actually get through the sys start. then ittl crash after 10 min or so. while im surfing online looking for a fix.
and yes, i tried everything on here short of a system format, and im not sure i'd care to at this point. i switched from a nvidia 5600fx to this as i read alot of the reviews and wanted to see what the fuss was. none of them (reviews) mentioned a severe stability issue with the drivers.
but im wandering....

i have found one, and just one stable setting for this card. if i
keep my display settings at 640x480 @ 256bit, its fine. totally and grainily fine. if i notch up either the screen size or the colors (or god forbid Both). Blap. freeze/re-boot.
has anyone else noticed this?

Well I manage to fix the UT2k3 problem when lo and behold another poblem occurs. This time with the 3.7 catalyst driver. Fist my mouse freezes then the screen gets all corrupt and winXP tells me that it the device driver failed. I had to reinstall 3.2 in order for anything to work. They better fix this $|-|!7 in 3.8

hmm, one more thing i've noticed,
i was poking around with it, changing this and that, and i Killed the ati controll panel thats supposed to load with win. (not disabled, screwd somthing and murdered it.) got a error in desk.cpl message.
However. im now running in 32b color at 800x600 with No ati controll panel (said it wouldnt start on boot) and its FINE. Stable, solid like a Chevy (or is that a rock..)
only....when i went to the config for Morrowind, ive got it detecting the card, but the pull down to set a screen res is Blank, as in theres not a single setting to select.
ill say one thing for nvidia...the drivers work out of the box....

Well, as I already said, I never had problems about my Radeon9600 Pro hanging freeze... on the other hand... I cant run ANY 3D game on it (with exception of MotoGP2) without getting extremelly corrupted graphics and geometry after some minutes (sometimes seconds) of playing!!!!

I am going today try to change the card...

after extensive mucking about both on-line and in the brain-meats of my comp, (plus a full format of aforementioned brainmeats, just to be SURE)
i can say that I have found a solution for this card and it's Lovely driver set.....
I'M KICKING THIS POS IN THE RIVER.
(splooch..heehee, look ma it floats....)
i'm going back to my local Best Buy and getting my nvidia5600 ultra back...
sure, the bench marks are half as good as the (theoreticals) for radeon, and the image quality IS lesser as far as color and aa.....
but considering the fact that I cant get this card to pass a benchmark for running NOTEPAD, i don't consider it to be any huge loss.
