Remember all drivers (including windows) need to be up*to*date
i heard somewhere that if windows(XP) in this case isn't fully patched that can cause unstability.. so if somebody hasn't updated windows try it and then remove all card drivers and the device ,then install device+drivers that might help somebody?

I believe in firepower..

Jesse, I don't mean to be rude, but that is the first thing any of us here would have done. Most people only even post in this thread because they have tried absolutely everything possible, and are desparate to find maybe some tiny undocumented trick that they overlooked.

I don't know if anyone else have had the possibility of viewing an error message when a 3D application hangs/freeze.

With my Sapphire 9600Pro I manged to keep the computer alive after a freeze and display an error message about an access-violation on a virtual address. Look at my screen-dump here: http://hem.bredband.net/tobsal/r9600pro-error.jpg

(This occured with several different driver versions.)

Hi all,

This problem u guys are having is not exclusive to 9600. I have an ati 9500pro and I have exactly the same problems as u guys. I havent tried many games, but my comp crashes moments into playing International Superstar Soccer 3. No problems with warcraft 3 however. Ill try a few more games in the days ahead but I am already dreading the foreseeable outcome. I have seen what mbs u guys are running and what systems you guys are using and the only correlation I can draw from it is that all of you guys are running Windows XP pro. Ill probably install windows 2000 or win98 and see how my card fairs. But like all of you I am really frustrated by the problem. Ive tried everything these threads have suggested, but to no avail and unlike some of you, I cant just return my card and buy another.

My system:

Asus P4PE mb
768 DDR RAM
Grandmars Radeon 9500pro
soundblaster live value
maxtor 40g hdd and quantum 20g hdd
pioneer dvd drive and sony cdrw

Running windows xp pro sp1
catalyst 3.8
directx 9.0b

Anyways really hope someone comes up with a solution.

JW do not install Windows 2000 that OS is a True Business OS, XP pro has All the Stuff of XP Home and then some additional features, ive heard many peeps have many more problems with newer hardware under 2000 than XP.

Plus The Architecture for the 9500 Radeon/Pro Came Out about the same time as the Radeon 9700/Pro It also applies to the All In Wonder Series boards since they run Radeon Chips too.

These Freezes Happen to users of 9700/ Pro and 9800/ Pro, even Geforce Vid Cards have problems, it is because of Bad Combinations of Vid cards with Mobos and such, AGP 8x is so new that Mobo Manufacturers havent gotten stability issues out of even newest mobos. If u can get a Combination to work under AGP 8x gl and tell us if it works or not with revision of motherboard and ram and other specs, Im on an ASUS P4S8X BIOS 1004, ATI All In Wonder 9700 Pro(Same As RADEON just with TV/Capture features)I Sent in the first 9700 via RMA request for repair, ATI found Card Defective so they sent me a new one, When i Installed Vid card and then installed drivers for it,SMARTGART Found AGP Mode 4X stable, even tho mobo is set to AGP 8x. So i think the SMARTGART is protecting system from stability but i dont think its truely running AGP 8X.

hey branden, i have windows 2000 installed and my machine is rock solid. before, i had win xp pro and whenever i played a 3d game it would hang after a few minutes. with windows 2000, i've been able to play halo for several hours nonstop with no interruption. i seriously think xp pro has something to do with the system hangs that 9600 owners (and other card owners) are suffering through.

The AIW 9600 Pro (released/purchased 10/10) is having the same problem. It's crashed under every 3d game I've played. Enter the Matrix doesn't seem as succeptible to crashes as WC3 and EliteForce2 Demo are, but it still does happen (after 60-90 min rather than 2s to 10min).

I just found this site/thread and will try a few of the suggestions tonight.

A license for HL2 came with this card, and so supposedly will work, but I'll apparently have to wait until next April to find out. :(

I wouldnt buy anything that was just released, id wait so many months after and buy revisions of the board or go buy a Third Party board. But since i replaced my board once(First one got Christmas 2002, ATI Radeon/AIW 9700 Pro) it had Major Problems with AGP 8x, and i tried everything to get it to run under AGP 8x, after so many months did RMA and sent Card to ATI and they found it to be Defective so they sent me a New One, well When i did fresh install of XP,(Mobo is set to AGP 8X, Fastwrites on, USWC Cache Mode) I installed SP1a, Installed Current Mobo Drivers and Installed the Catalyst Drivers, Well during install The Drivers do test to see what mode is stable, well after restart it found that under SMARTGART AGP mode 4x is set and considers it stable, so now im thinking its the motherboard, May Just be a bad Mobo/Vid Card Combination, but then this is an ASUS P4S8X(sis648) one of the first AGP 8X mobos to come out, and my First Vid board was probably a first release also like version 1.0 or what ever

Wow I can't believe all the problems with this card. Maybe we're all just imagining these problems. Pretend they're not there and they might go away. I thought it just had to do with the sound. Silly me. So far I've read:

Disable plug n play OS
Redownload directx9 after installing updated drivers.
Installing updated drivers after downloading directx9.
Overclock my computer
Switch off hyperthreading in bios
Video Memory settings to UC rather thatn UCSW
Disable writecombining
Using 3.5 drivers instead of 3.6, 3.7 or 3.8
Changing settings in smartgart in ati control panel

I have a Gigabyte 875P mobo with a 800fsb, 2.4 cpu, 1024 gb ram, with a 400W psu

I'm sure there's more, but I hope something works. I'm having my biggest problem with Morrowind, but I just want to be able to run Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. If none of these work, I think I'll run across my carpet with my wool socks on and then grab the video card. Maybe it just needs a little shock. I'll let you know if it works when I regain consiousness.

I've got the same problem

ecs p4s5a/dx+ mobo (with a sis chipset)
and of course a 9600 pro :-)

you can add a cuple more games to the list on crashers:
Empires Dawn of the Modern World(fixed with hardware acceleration down 1), and Journey to the Center of the Earth(not fixed)

just to let you guys know, turning down the hardware acceleration 1
notch works for most games..
this can be done under display properties, settings, advanced, performance.. that fixed most of the crashing for me..
not that I'm happy having to do that.. a real fix in the drivers would be nice.
i've also got new agp drivers for my sis645dx chipset (agp117.exe from the sis website) hoping that might help, but i haven't put them on yet, I'm a little concerned they might just make things worse and i wont be able to uninstall them :-)

Also if you want to get half-life running without having to turn down your hardware acceleration you can change to d3d mode, it doesn't seem to crash..
if your using steam you change can change to d3d by right clicking on the game you want to play in the steam games menu, going to properties, then launch options, then add -d3d, the game should launch in d3d, if that doesn't work try -software, then go to d3d from the in game menu...

I'd like to sympathise with all u guys with your problems with this potenitally excellent card, but from what ive heard, its really causing problems. luckily, mine doesn't cause system crashes and freezing, but garbled graphics and incorrectly rendered 3d objects are a little added bonus.

basically, in many games, ( UT2003, splinter cell) certain 3d objects - points on the wireframe of the shape, extend into the environment and at certain detail levels and when lots is going on ( M-TW), you cant see anything!

Also, on games like Homworld 2, when i have certain drivers, this doesn't arise - but in Half life and Call of duty, small patterns like brickwork appear in most places, mainly where a glowing light is behind a wall, ( COD- fires behind walls, H2-engine glow), and makes things difficult to pick out!! I need help!!!

my system specs are

Xp 1600+
connect 3d r9600 pro
MSI K7T 2 Turbo motherboard
catalyst 3.5 - tried 3.5 to 3.8
512mb SDram
win 98
old soundblaster 128 card

Ive tried various options in the bios, but some ive seen int he posts - i aint got a clue!

Mark: You forgot the main 2 things that solve problems:

- Disable Fast writes in the bios
- Increase AGP voltage.

Andrew: Artifacts in the images are sometimes caused by overheating problems, try underclocking your system for a bit and see if they go away. If that works, check the workmanship on the heatsink of your card.

Make sure the card has enough ventilation. Otherwise I would return it saying it's not fit for the purpose you bought it for.

I to have a problem with my 9600 pro(3d prophet), the weird thing is that generals worked perfectly until I hooked my pc ontoo my tv. Now I have the same "move the mouse and it crashes problem". After trying the new drivers etc. I thought formating would result in having my system working like before, unfortunatly it doesn't. Does anyone know what could have coased this?
