well i have more problems now. I thought the 3.5 drivers fixed my problem but now counter strike won't load up. I remember when i had 3.7 installed, cs worked fine with opengl and d3d. Now i cant run either.

I've found a solution that works for my games....

-Go to Settings in the "Display properties"
-Select the SECOND display adapter and click "Advanced"
-Click the troubleshoot tab and set Hardware Acceleration to none.
-If you have an adapter, use the DVI port instead of the old VGA one.
-Reboot

hmm thats new... i did a fresh install of windows and in windows update there was an ATI software update... it wasnt a driver update but it was in the "driver" section of windows update. I wonder if maybe it fixed something but i dont really want to try so im just going back to 3.5 again. If someone wants to try it out, tell me if it works for you. Go to Start, Windows update, Scan for updates, and click on the 'drivers' section and there should be an ATI file.

When running high end apps, namely 3D games I guess.. The System LOCKS up after a bit with a continuous BEEP.

Anybody with a k7s5a mobo fix the NWN / C&C lock ups? I was hanging for the 3.9 cats but now that i have them and they do NOTHING, i'm dispairing the point of this 9600. Having tested extensively, let me just save other SiS 735 users the effort of:

Applying new SiS drivers
Getting the 3.9 cats
Disabling / uninstalling your logitech keyboard / mouse software (i knew this was a long shot but i tried anyway)
Flashing your BIOS (i've got one of the later 2002 AMI releases, i THINK it's the most recent)
Trying to get the SMARTGART thing to use fastwrite (it just ain't gonna happen I think)
Swapping out your RAM (I know it looks like a CPU / RAM problem, but i've tried with 3 different RAM speeds / chips and it don't change a thing)

None of the above did diddly squat for me, if they did for someone else (with a SiS based board) pls let me know. Most irritating is that after months of this thread being around ATI still don't have it on their "known issues" list - what's with that? How much less known can it be??

p.s. can anyone confirm that this problem does not exist in windows 2000? cos everyone so far has mentioned xp pro.

I think i found the problem... For *ME* atleast.

I have a Gigabyte Radeon running on an Asus Mobo. As far as i can tell the video card hardware is fine. Its the mobo that has "broken" support for 8x.

When i run at 4x (strictly with the VIA 4-in-1 drivers) the card is fine. No lockups for 4 whole days... lots of testing was done in this time.

But yesterday i switched to 8x - and immediately the crash started. So for *me* atleast i think it is a mobo incompatibility issue.. Because the gigabyte radeon is a late release of the ati radeon 9600 pro... Check this: http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/gigabyte_r96p/

Gigabyte Radeon supposedly has a fix for the incompatibility - but its my mobo i'm sure.
... And i still am looking for Memcheck - sisoft sandra doesn't let me check VRAM.

I got epoxKRA2+ and it works perfectly with my friends G4Ti4800SE with AGP8x and so-on..
But with my 9600pro... i dont think its the mobos AGPslot
When executing smartgart from ATIdriverfile folder(mine is in c:/prog/ATI/drivers)CAT3.9
it brings menu where is PCI read/write & AGP read/write? PCI write is on PCI read is on? WHAT THE ****
that means? then that ADVsmartgart can try AGP & PCI writes etc.. wit booting and testing does those work. But it doesn't do anything ,i manually changed AGP 8X on and AGP Read on Seems to work.
Played 3hours without chrashes etc.. I think im going to try to disable PCI read/write and enable only AGP ones? has anybody tried that? well im beginning to absolutely HATE ATI because of the 9600 pro and its driver issues. I think i get it working finally with 3.5 then i find out it doesnt work with another game i just tried (counter strike). Seems like 3.5 has issues iwth opengl and 3.6-3.9 have issues with a handful of other games. But since i have no money to buy another card im just gonna haveta keep whinin and reading this thread to see if anyone fixed it yet.

How dare they say that with cataclysts&radeon u got a fast & stable system?

Uninstalled all ATI things drivers C-panel ,devices!

After boot windows found new hardware & wanted basicVGA drivers ,asked AUTOMATIC(recommended)
or manual.

I manually put directly CATACLYST3.9 from folder where driver .inf was ,only driver was installed 3.9

No C-panel or anything else ,couldn't change settings from windows it's hard without controlpanel

Then i ran 3dmark 2001 ,03 played several hours WITH AGP8X ,FASTWRITE ON ,AGP read/write on!!

Worked 100% fine! Then i installed controlpanel and after boot Windows freezed!

Now i have everything else like should exept FASTWRITE... Last time i post here this is ridiculous ! !

so you downloaded 3.9 then when your computer found new hardware and asked to install drivers you clicked manually and chose the 3.9 driver you downloaded?

Yes thats what i did manually chose Driver.inf from folder where i had 3.9 (C:ATI/SUPPORT/DRIVERS)

Once again uninstalled drivers did the same thing without panel ,only driver inf ,seems to work BUT

Cant change settings.... But at least it works fine!

3Dmark 03 @ 3200

Tested AOW:shadowmagic & UFO:aftermath they work fine...

With certainty all those problems have something to do with the chipset or the MBs themselves. Also for my MSI KT266 pro 2 there's a weird story. I faced the same probs like you guys (except for UT2003, CS and most of the other games) especially with C&C Generals.

But I even had another problem BEFORE this.

As I installed my new Ati 9600 pro (AGP) suddenly my sound was horribly crackling and delaying. Damn! So I tried some other bios settings and by disabling one USB port sound was fine. What da hell?
Finally I got a new PCI Soundcard and disabled my Onboard one. Now it all works fine.

Did anybody face the same problem?

Concerning the C&C problem i tried all the suggested stuff here: newest drivers; mouse trail; lowering hardware acceleration; changing aperture size...(bulls**t), but only one helped me out. ENABLING FAST WRITE --> and no C&C crash ever appeared

Tried this fix and it seems to work in COD I was able to play for more then 10 min (for a while actually) needs more testing

Anti-Aliasing: Uncheck Application Preference, set Samples to whatever you want I would keep in low at first
Anisotropic Filtering: same as above
Texture Preference: Quality
Mipmap Detail Level: Quality
V-Sync Wait: Application Pref
Truform: off
Direct3d: Same as OpenGL

I don't have the logitech kb/mouse, just a M$oft optical. I have a K7S5A rev 1 mobo. Generals and NWN are currently the only games that lock the system. I tried turning down the hardware acceleration with no luck, Cat 3.8's, 3.9's, currently running OmegaDrivers 24.87 (which I believe are either modded 3.7's or 3.8's).

I also am running a CheepoBios from OCWorkbench to enable 143 FSB. Clocked stock it doesn't matter either. However, I believe I saw something from ATI about Rage3dTweak NOT being supported and they highly recommended I uninstall it, which I did, and then checked regedit for anything left behind. Nada, same issue.

I haven't gotten Smartgart to work either. As for 2k, I had the same issue with Win2k and the 9600 Pro with Cat 3.6's (again, modded Omega drivers).

What SiS AGP driver are you using? I think I'm on 1.14. Further back in the thread I saw people stating they uninstalled it and got slightly better stability.

And before everyone gets all bent out of shape about posting specs, etc, how can we identify an issue if we don't systematically eliminate things and find a common thread? Perhaps only with the ECS board, but still...

When I get home I might downclock my FSB to 112 or 126 or whatever the heck Cheepo allows it, and then test, without making any other changes. I'll let everyone know how the testing goes.

atleast you can play CS for 10 minutes... as soon as CS has connected to a server and the console goes away, my CPU either freezes or reboots right away. I can't run it in D3D or OGL.

Anyway...my comp used to hang all the time even in windows sometimes in min of each hang , vpu recover would save me most of the time but now my comp has been running for three hours stright no lockups, freezes, black screens, or vpu recovers, so go figure...Mp in COD would always hang, no prob now.
