I have a Tyan Tachyon 9600 pro and yesterday decided to see if some more cooling would help... in the TGM it read that my card was @ 50°C so i used one of my case fans. Placed this onto the back of the card on the heatsink then tried it on some games... All i can say is that the problem aint gone but i can play games for about an hour or more now without lockups or monitor switching into power saving mode.it sometimes does do this but its a big change from only being able to play for about 10 mins. hope this helps some1 else or gives any 1 any more ideas ?

if heat is an issue then you have a faulty card. 9600 Pro's are supposed to run cool which is why they overclock so well. Whats TGM? i want to find out what temps my cards running at... is TGM only for the tyan cards?

Gigabyte cards include a program that lets you monitor the cards temp plus the same prog allows you to overclock it too. Don't know if any of these programs will work on other brands of 9600 Pro though?

Sorry about the empty post.

Finally solved this problem for once and for all. It was so simple..................................................................I RMA'ed my Tyan 9600Pro to Ebuyer and bought a 9800PRO from eBay brand new for only 50quid more. This probably wont help anyone else but its about time you all gave up and just accepted the 9600PRO for what it is..................WORSE than an FX5600 and thats saying something. Ive sed it beofre and ill say it again. Motherboard and Graphics card incompatibility is the route of it all. If it was a driver problem then surely my shiny new 9800PRO wouldnt work on my rig either. ATI cannot fix this and will not fix this. If you can still send it back then do so. If this card doesnt work on your system then it is technically Faulty under Warranty, you should be able to send them all back. DO it now before its too late.

peace out and happy gaming

I recently bought a brand new ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb and loaded Neverwinter Nights after I upgraded my OS to XP Pro. The game plays fine for about 1 to 2 minutes then while still in the game my entire computer crashes. The screen freezes, the music will just skip with this continuous clicking, I can't even get the Task Manager to come up, and I have no idea why. I got the latest ATI Radeon drivers and also updated the Neverwinter Nights right after I installed it; I got all the patches. A friend told me to post a thread here to see if anyone have any idea(s) as to the solution to my plight and from all the posts I see with people that are having the same problem, it seems I am not alone. Again, if anyone has any idea(s) to solve my problem let me know at "daggerdx3886@hotmail.com"

My computer is:

P3 800 Mhz
Asus CUSL2 (Intel 815E Chipset Series)
2 sticks of PC133 256MB16
2 hard drives; 1 30gig 7200rpm and the other 120gig 7200 rpm
Brand New Radeon 9600 Pro 256mb
Creative Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
and a 300 watt Antec power supply.

HI EVERYONE. I Bought the ATi9600Pro "Great for this Generation and the Next generation gaming". I was rushing to see how good it works for my new game "C&C Generals" as soon as it hits the main menu It HANGS FREEZES nothing can be done but reboot. I Messed around with everything catalyst driver updates blabla.. my system handles ALL the latest 3-D Games as it did when i had GeforceTi 4200 64mb. But F**K the game still hangs unless i slow down Hardware Acceleration "made the game work but down with the graphics.". Anyways my solution for everyone With 9600 Hang Freeze Problems. Dont Upgrade your SYSTEM just change the card. Im changing mine tomoro to FX5800 Ultra 500Coreclock - 1ghz memory clock with DDR2 for a few extra $ compaired with the f+++kin ATI. Thanks everyone hope Radeon manufacturers reply to their customer needs.

Hi all
I bought a Gigabyte 9600 Pro last Thursady after checking with my credit card company and also with the shop that I bought it from on the subject of returns. Credit card said that if an item costs over £100 then thats fine. The shop will take it back for a full refund if its faulty (stop laughing I know the thing is crap) or the shop will take it back less a restock fee of 15% if it ok but i just don't like it. So i bought one- a Gigabyte GV R96P128DH. Will its plays a few games ok ish. MOH, incoming Forces, JEDI Knight 2. But Neverwinter nights, plays all the intro stuff and loads fine, till the game proper starts. Now I dare say hidden away in trhe depths of he seb is a fix to this- But I have read enough and seen enough to tell me that for the next year- to 2 years I am not going to do this, when my old Hercules Kyro just worked with no fuss. I only neede a new one cos Kyro chips don't have support Tand L.
So the 9600 P ro is just about to be ripped out of this PC and put back in its ever so nice box and take hence back to where it came from.
Gigabyte and ATI are now freshly added to my black list of people never to trade/buy from ever.
Gett his for a laugh, one of the game that came with the damned card refused to work too- something called WilRock, I did not bother with the Tomb raider Angel of Darkness or the latest Rainbow Six Tom Clancey effort. If the games that came with the card don't work - what will?

Perhaps ATI were good, but this 9600 Pro is a p**s poor effort that smacks of cost cutting, lazyness and attempts to try and milk the good press that the supposedly good 9700 Pro got.
And no I'm not going to bother finding any further ATI products.
Once bitten -twice shy.

I will now return my old trusty Kyro card to its rightful place and leave graphics card buying to next year when something better and proven to be better from Nvidia might be out.

Twilight
PS If it helps Im based in the UK but I dare say all the 9600 Pro cards are shi**e the world over.

If you favor nVidia then get an FX5600 Ultra for practically the same price. Of course, most ATI users will disagree, but if you want an nVidia card to last you for at least a year until you can upgrade then this is the one.

LOL JACK you so crazy.

Anyway, I am tired of posts saying "I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM!" all I did was take the card out and shoot it with my shotgun... (dont get me wrong the thought has crossed my mind) Was there something written on the box that said, "This card only works with two mobos in the entire world." Was there not testing done? s**t, Is that why the card is so relatively cheap, cuz one needs to buy a completely new system to run the damn thing? Sorry to rant but that’s all I can do anymore. BTW, I wish I had the time, patience, and money to buy a new card but I dont.

I wish people would at least read the 1st couple of pages and the last couple of pages before posting as this would save a lot of frustration and time spent repeating things.

I have solved the problem with my 9600 pro (yes, i know i said "I have solved the problem", sorry) and can only speak about how I solved it, but I believe the problems are down to:

A) motherboards/chipsets not supporting AGP 8X properly.
B) conflicts with other devices on the PCI bus.

To solve my problem I removed my SBLive completely (drivers too) and moved over to the motherboard on-board sound. Maybe a removal of all other PCI devices (just for testing, you understand) might yield some results? If so, even with ACPI on in XP it might still be some sort of IRQ conflict.

Big difference for me getting this working, because my problem was not just that I couldnt run Call Of Duty at AGP8X with all the fancy stuff on, but that I couldnt run ANY OpenGL games at all at any speed.

I do read other forums and I'll post back here if I see something useful that might solve you guy's problems.

surfboy-
Hi, its good to hear you've fixed your problem..
However, it seems to me that you're having a different problem then a lot of us are having.

just to give you an idea what I mean, most games work fine for people with my problem, there's something like 10 games out there now that wont run on the 9600pro in combo with certain motherboards, and when games don't run, they always crash on mouse movement. (seems to mostly be games with a hardware mouse, correct me if i'm wrong)

Also my motherboard only runs at 4x so 8x AGP is not an issue, and i don't run a sound blaster live, i use my motherboards onboard sound, in fact i have nothing extra on my motherboard besides the Radeon 9600Pro (my lan is onboard as well) so i don't really think its a IRQ conflict (but then i'm no expert so you tell me)

hi everyone again. i am now satisfied with my computer and its graphic card. i was only suppose 2 buy and exchange my 9600pro for a FX5800ultra but i noticed that there was this nice case Xaber 3, it looked so fine and i bought it, i though my 512ddr ram was kinda slow while i was shopping in the store so upgraded to 2 chips of 1 GIGs now i got sum of 2gigs ram. Now when i play c&c generals it runs like it was flying without wind.

You are only using a bare minimum of add on cards, but you still get a problem. What chipset is your Mobo and what type of on board sound chip do you use?
Now im no expert, but I have found that even the worse problems in the past have had a sort off workaround.
Okay as you know I have a Gigabyte 9600Pro card that will by the end of this week see a return to the shop if no prgress is made. I did get in touch with the shop about this and he says that most if not all 3d games run under Open GL or D3D, so if you have games that have worked using these two methods then it must be a game issue and that if you equip was at fault then you would have problems with everything.
Some people do get this so they have a faulty card. Those that have had some games work, ther might still be hopw - yet.
The VIA- soundblaster issue is wll know, so maybe Radeon turning up does not help. I went to another shop that is going to let me try out a new non VIA mobo, and I noticed that mobo makers are making boards with both VIA and Nforce2 chipsets- maybe there is good reason for the two flavours!!!
I will do what i can this week before giving in, shame is if you have seen the card work, its good, Jedi 2 and MOH and of the Mech ganes was bloody good.
I will keep you all posted on this, cos its a real problem for us all if there is only two types of graphic chips about and one is crap and the other is a bit so so too. Bring back KYRO and 3DFX too.

I managed to get some progress with regards to Neverwinter Nights. I installed the original disks, then installed the Shadows of Undertide add on disk. This I think up grades NWN to 1.30. Then you go into the configure options screen from the first screen that comes up when you start the game. Now uncheck the hardware mouse option, set texture to 32M and move the video slider on the bar one notch from the right (assuming your one is fully to the right that is) This seemt ot get the game to run. I'm pretending problem solved or how long the game will run. but its better than 1 min then crash/freeze that I had yesterday. I also un installed he PCI secondary driver too, but that may not have had an effect, but worth a try if you only use one monitor.
For the record I'm, using Win 98SE, 2100+Athlon,512mb DDR333, EQS Mobo (VIA Chipset) and Soundblaster Live!. There is 550 W PSU too. And the Radeon is a GigaByte version 128Mb. Now i'm not into programming so I don't even know how 3d apps work, but if reducing texture sizes helps, then maybe the problem is to do with the additional info a larger texture set has.
Anyway off to try a few others things out too- oh and must remember the girlfriend likes a bit of attention too.
