That's good to hear, did any of you made this new patch work with NeverWinter, especially Age of Mythology, without disabling the Hardware Mouse.

I'm about to buy a regular GeCube 9600 (not PRO, not XT) with 128 MB. Does it have the same problems you all are complaining about?

By the way, is it a noisy card?

Hi,

I bought a Hercules9600 radeon with 256 MB DDR on board RAM. I had the same freezing problems with Halo, Unreal2003 and C&C generals. After a lot of searching, I went back to the computerstore and told them something had to be wrong with this card... Latest drivers, lowering hardware acceleration, nothing helped...
They told me there was something wrong indeed, something with the pixel shaders???? And gave me a new one... But off course, it does exactly the same. I PRAY TO GOD that the patch posted yesterday will help me out, cause I m getting pretty fed up with ATI s graphics boards. Don t tell me they didn t know about this problem sooner... It seems like all the 3D intensive games I play crah sooner or later... What s the point in buying their cards then? What does the patch do exactly?

Grtz

That sort of depends on what motherboard you have... If its older you may want to think twiced before betting any 9600.. Try doing a search for you're motherboards name in this thread, if you find any messages with your motherboard name in the same post as someone saying the card didnt work you know for sure you should stay away from the 9600.. on the other hand just because you search and dont find your motherboard doesnt mean it will work for sure, either way you take a chance.. if you do buy make sure they have a fair return policy

If you have a NForce2 mainboard, get a Gigabyte 9600 Pro 128 mb, the 256mb wont make a difference, cos by the time games need 256mb, the card will be too slow- so get a GIGABYTE CARD- THEY WORK BETTER THAN MOST OF THE OTHER ATI RADEON CARDS- okay folks- shhhh how many times do I have to say this!!!!
How many of you with problems have a gigabyte brand of card???? Mine works completely with no problems- reason being i swopped my old VIA based mainboard for a NForce 2 one.

Hi guys !!!
I had the same problem too ... All 3D games not working ...
Freeze after 10 or 30 sec (when mouse moves)
I also tried the FIRST Call of Duty Patch with no success !!!

But there is a SECOND patch from ATI :
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-cod-7-96-012624e.exe

look at the ...012624e.exe : the first patch was ...012324e.exe !!!

I tried this patch and ...
...

It works :) :) :) :) :)

All my games run at AGP 8x and AGP FastWrite enabled
even PGA tour 2004, Madden 2004, F1C 99'02 !!!

Good job ATI.

Re:Jeff S
"Got it!! Thank you all
I just wanted to post that I have found the solution to this pain in the a## problem.

This thread has become so big that it took me this long to find it. In a message posted on Sept. 7, 6:33 am, (page 8 of this thread) I found a message by Matthias Noack that said:

1.) Disable "AGP FastWrite" in the BIOS
2.) Browse to your folder, where you installed the ATI Control Panel
3.) Execute file: SmartGard (this is a link)
4.) Do following settings (no matter what the auto-detection says!):
PCI Write: ON
PCI Read: ON
AGP Write: OFF
AGP Read: ON
5.) Apply
6.) automatic restart and after that WAIT some seconds because during windows logon, the driver tests your system
7.) SmartGard starts automatically and you have to confirm the new settings with "OK"
8.) Have Fun!

This worked for me!!! This is especially relieving for me because I have been struggling with this problem since October. If only this thread were much shorter, I would have found it sooner! Anyways, if any of you are still struggling with it I encourage you to try this fix. A few notes on mine:

A. I do not have an "AGP fast write" option in my bios. The only thing I had to change was AGP Write = OFF in the SmartGart.
B. The utility is called "smartgart", not smartgard. This threw me when I did a search for it.
C. Before the fix, I was having difficulty with the following games:
Age of Mythology & Age of Titans: freeze/hang when I moved the mouse
SimCity 4 Deluxe: freeze/hang 30 seconds or so after moving the mouse
Tom Clancy- Raven Shield: A really ambigous error message upon launch
Any DVD player: Freeze/hang system if you move mouse too quickly or have too many background programs running (I actually forgot to check if this is fixed yet or not)

Now everything works fine. I can't believe how easy it was. Thanks for all the help everyone, and thanks Matthias for figuring it out. I hope this works for the rest of you.

My system:

ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9600 Pro (catalyst 3.9)
ECS k7s5a (no updates on the bios but updated AGP drivers)
Athlon XP 1600+
512mb DDR 2700 RAM
Windows XP Pro w/ SP1 and ALL updates
Audigy 2 ZS (updated driver-I forget which version)
Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM 8mb cache HD
"

Hello, I tried this solution today and was surprised to see the first game i tried working!!
However my doubts proved well founded when i tried several other games.. The first game i had tried was "Empires Dawn of the Modern World", This happens to be the only game where turning down hardware acceleration in windows fix's the problem, in all others i have to disable hardware mouse within the game itself.. Like i said Empires worked, i played for about 5 min just to make sure the mouse movement crash wasn't a little delayed, no problems.. so before getting my hopes up i tried several other games known to crash on mouse movement.. First steam, at first it seems to be working but then it locked up after about 2 min.. So next i tried StarWars Knights Of the Old Republic with hardware mouse enabled and i still got a crash in the menu when moving the mouse.. So for whatever reason this fix works for at least 3 games that would have crashed in the past, Empires, age of mythology, and Simcity4 as well as dvd playback (i haven't tested this because i don't have a dvd-drive)

I'll be testing out the new Day of Defeat Hotfix later on tonight or tomorrow, ill let you guys know how that goes

Has anyone else been having problems with psychadelic textures and colors with Madden 2004?
Iam running dx9.0b, Which it suggests in the faq, needless to say, all my other games run fine, which seems to be status quo with this forum.

Woow! My problem wasnt heat or if it was it was because of closed case!
Got only 2x80mm fans.. need to put couple more!

Now when case is open i have OC'd from 400/600 to 423/650 without any extra cooling and 3dmarks rise from 2001SE @10600 to 11500
2003 @3200 to (@3450 dont remember exatly, ill put exact number when i get home) battle of proxygon @FPS is @25!! before was @16! (It works smoothly, finally)

Im lucky, i have samsung memory on card & samsung got usually good memory.
Im still going to put old cpu heatsink to "slices" with saw & put the "slices" to cards memory with arctic adhesive(heat-glue). I'll take pictures of work and put them on my homepage & give you the link when its done and after got those "slices" on ill try to rise the mem to atleast 700Mhz.
(Gonna make my crap @ 9700PRO!)

My card now works with Fastwrites on, AGP read/write on etc..
Played over 4hours 3different games without problems! My card seems to like getting little more MHZ!..
http://www.rage3d.com
Here i got my tweaker, oh and R3d tweaker gives more options to adjust card, i putted SSE enchancements ON, and 3Dnow! ON + something else, Try atlest new option tweaker gives they might increase speed & stability!

I believe in firepower..

Re Brent - agree post getting a tad long... One other thing that helps changing some of the clock / voltage settings. Can't remember which genius came up with this but it worked for me.

* In the BIOS, UNDERclock your CPU / FSB and increase your AGP voltage. For instance, my system = 2800+ XP, 1Gb DDR, AF7S v. 2.0, 9800Pro. I underclocked from 166 to 133 leaving multiplier at 12.5x and reduced put the memory to 5/5 ie 266 and inc the AGP voltage from 1.5 to 1.7. You may have to experiment a little.

The SmartGart and AGP settings fix solved CoD for me, but still couldn't get Halo or Unreal II Awakening to work. Halo *would* be OK with -nosound qualifier (like what's the point...) but if I had sound I'd get a vorbis.dll error reallllll quick! Doing the fix above solved it completely. Unreal went from flaky to stable. Go figure.

Cheers

Sam

Blaf! I raised my FSB & memory timings + OC'd card, after that crap runs smoothly.

Now card is 425.25/648, stock was 400/600
3Dmark03: 3489!
PCmark04: 3300
(11x173: 1908Mhz)cpu

I know the post is getting very long, but my proble; remains.. C&C Generals keeps freezing on me!!! I tried the http://www2.ati.com/drivers/wxp-w2k-cod-7-96-012624e.exe patch and turning down hardware acceleration, nothing works...
I m gonna try to fix it by changing the BIOS stuff: AGP fast write, AGP 8X??

Is there anybody with this Radeon 9600 series card that can actually PLAY the C&C game without a crash?
(Gonna test Halo and UT2003 in the weekend but I m afraid it will be the same :(()

even if you overclock your 9600 Pro to the same speeds as a 9700 pro, the 9700 pro will still destroy your 9600 pro. It just has better specs then the 9600 Pro (ie 8pipelines instead of 4). The mem and core of videocards isnt everything...

Yes its true indeed. :) but guys does anyone here agree with me and are willing to argue with me if they dont agree with me about the fact that the best Average Card worth for the buck is the "Gainward Geforce FX5700Ultra", and it destroy's Radeon9600Pro/XT in the serries of many tests. http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=gw5700u&page=1

Hey guys, i've now seen several different people (here and elsewhere) say raising your vcore voltage from 1.5 to 1.6 will solve the problems we seem to be having...

however my motherboard is cheep and the bios doesn't seem to have any voltage settings i can change...
Is there any other way to adjust the voltage besides the built in bios? i'm guessing i'm just screwed, but you tell me :-)

the 5700ultra doesnt destroy the 9600 xt. The 9600xt has better image quality then the 5700 ultra and the 5700 only outperforms is by like 1-5fps. With AA AF settings enabled, the 9600 xt destroys the 5700 ultra... if the 9600xt sacrificed image quality, it would perform better then the 5700. The 9600xt also comes with half life 2 and its even a little cheaper then the 5700 ultra so its obviously the better buy.

Hi everyone

Well this is one massive post and I recently purchased the radeon 9600 XT and experience the same problems you have,

I recently purchased a sapphire ATI Radeon 9600 XT from allstarshop.com, from the installation of the card, I have had the same problem no matter what I did with it, when I enter any game, I am able to play for 5 - 30 seconds before the game hangs and I am no longer able to do anything besides restart my computer, I installed an tried a range of the latest games ranging from need for speed underground to homeworld 2 and halo, nothing seems to work, here is my system specs

AMD Athlon XP 2200+ at 1.79ghz
786 mb pc 2700 DDR ram
80 gig main harddrive, 40 gig secondary
CDRW, DVD-ROM
450 watt powersupply
Biostar M7vitPro Motherboard running Phoneix Biox
and of course the ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128mb ddr at AGP 8x

Here is what I have tried,

The original catalyst drivers have the same problem that came with the card
The latest catalyst drivers also cause the same problem
I tried a different set of drivers called omega, they did not work
I tried disabling vpu recover, that did not work either

I must apologize for not reading any further, still on page 15 of this post but I would appreciate any help at all
