Ok here's the picture... when I start it up without any change in compatibility mode, the screen goes black for a sec like it's video testing, then it goes straight back to windows, nothing happens. When I change the compatibility mode to 95/98/me it gives me the FT_Thunk (kernel32.dll) error or:
DIABLO 2 SERVER ERROR
File Read Error
Location : C:\D2\Source\D2Hell\SRC\Archive.cpp, line #56
Expression : data\local\use

or the famous
UNHANDLED EXCEPTION
c0000000(5)

It works fine on my old computer... 500 mhz 192 ram, 32 mb vid card... piece'a junk, but on my dell??

2.39 ghz
512 mb DDR
Radeon 9700
60 gig hd.......

When I try to install the expansion all it does is tell me the version of D2 has to be the same as D2X... when they ARE. I've tried everything from contacting Dell to Blizz (not microsoft though) and all I've gotten is a command to go to the other company. Blizz just told me they couldn't help and wouldn't even bother...

Is it XP or my hardware or what??? I just wanna play a freakin game!

I want to but I'm afraid that if I do that it still won't work... I hate XP though so I'll try it. Any more suggestions? Do you think it's my hardware or XP? I just dont wanna have to backup all my stuff, install win98 and then have it not work... that would blow.

Just back up all your files and stop using XP for game - for me, Win 98 is best for game, it uses less resources than XP. So, a couple of hour for back up and install 98 is not a hard work, right?
Or maybe you can install 98 as a second OS, use it for game and back to XP when you need more security.

I wanna do that but it's horrifying to think of all of the cds... Will the drivers and everything work on windows 98 though? I wanna use WIN98, period, because I HATE XP... but will that fix the problem or not, because I don't wanna do all that for nothing...

Oh and I forgot that XP and 98 are different compressions... NFTS and FAT.
Is there anyway I can install 98 without wiping out my HD?

If you have CD writer, back up to CD,
You can change your NTFS to FAT 32 by using last version of Partition Magic, if your HD capacity quite big, 40 gig or more, make sure to make some partition for system and data. You can store all of your program on data partition, so anytime you want to reinstall system you dont have to insert CD system anymore.
I'm sure your Diablo II will wotk on 98, if you dont have driver software, you can contact Dell, I'm sure they have 98 driver for your computer

K, thanks. I'll get Partition Magic off of Kazaa... will it turn part of my harddrive from NFTS to FAT? Can I choose to turn some empty space into the FAT? All I wanna do is take most of my leftover space (bout 30/60 gigs) and turn it into FAT so I can game on WIN98... will that work? That way I wouldn't have to format and delete my partition..

I used to play D2 on winxp all the time. Did you upgrade from Win98 or full install? Also what windows updates have you installed? You may just want to uninstall/reinstall D2. You wont lose saved info because all the account information is stored on the Bliz servers.

It could also be the video mode. Look in the D2 folder on the start menu and see if you can find the video test thing.

DO NOT USE 98!!!! IT DOESNT SUPPORT OVER 2.2GHz or over 384MB RAM. Use Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 (Kazaa.......)

Sincerely,
Brandon G.

If it says unhandled exception error, you probably have programs running and creating a conflict. Go to msconfig and enable selective start up and uncheck the "load start up items" box, then see how it works.

Hi,

I had similar problems but a full lockup on my W98 1st ed.
check the Diablo folder and there should be a text file created using the date run.
Exg. D2030706 (D2 year month day)
open it and at the bottom should be your error.
Mine was:

File Read Error
Location : D2Hell\SRC\Archive.cpp, line #59
Expression : data\global\sfx\cursor\button.wav

I tried several reinstalls, patches, drivers, DirectX ect. but all error'd the same. Then I installed it on my dual cpu WinNT4.0 box and it worked great.
From looking at the error it seems a certain part of the compressed game files is not extracting and being read properly by the game engine. I looked at the mpq files and one is called D2sfx.mpq and in my error was the Dir path SFX so i copied the file from my working NT4 install (via network) and it now D2 works great on my W98 box no more black screen lockups.

My thoughts are that these .MPQ files are not being read & copied properly by some cd-rom drives (Sony 32x?) from the Diablo cds. Try looking at your error in the text file i mentioned & getting an idea which mpq it is by the path name. then obtain a copy of that .mpq from another machine that works with d2, either via network, internet, or have a friend burn it to cd.

I hope this helps you.

Take Care

Go into the D2 program file and run the D2VidTst.exe file. Then try to run the game

Youíve got it running in compatibility mode, but have you set it to run in protected memory? Iíve seen plenty of old games running on 2000/XP have problems that came down to that. I canít remember for sure if Iíve seen it on Diablo 2, but on Diablo 1 that sorted it to run on my machine in 2000.

Is the CD OK. Have you tried to wash it? Do a search for Diablo II and make sure no other parts of the game were partially installed, and if they were delete them. Reboot in safe mode and then try to reinstall.
