Listen up and listen (read really) well. I think this is going to be a little lengthy, sorry about that.

I was revamping my friend's old computer. He had a Pentium 3, 256 SD PC100 RAM. A 20 GB HDD with windows 98 installed, with programs that my friend wants to save if possible. It was a Dell. I had an earlier post with different issues if you wanna get some more info, but I think I should cover everything.

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/8900/

Anyhow, he wanted to upgrade his Video Card from a TNT Vanta to a Geforce FX 5200 128MB. Well his PSU was only 200W, and the computer would shut down when installing the drivers for the video card. So he called me to figure this out. All my PSU's wouldn't work because they were AMD/P4 configured. The Geforce FX called for a 250W PSU or better. I had a Spare 300W. We used that and decided to outfit him with new components that I had.

Installing the Hardware:
We put in the 300W PSU, a ECS K7S5A, Geforce FX, a modem, a NIC, and a Volcano 7 for the Athlon XP 1800+ now in there. We used the SD RAM so we have to run it at 100 FSB for the time being, he is going to buy some DDR RAM later. We also left in the Dell case the CD-DRIVE, Zip Drive, and the Floppy. At first we couldn't get it to work because the power button cord and such was a single cord. Everntually after placing it in odd positions around the motherboard pins for the PWBT, we got it.
Powered up, went into windows and it auto installed many of the drivers installed the drivers.

The Issues:
It couldn't find the sound drivers, but don't pay attention to this as of yet, we are using on-board sound, but his old comp was using a Santa Cruz card. We are going to stick that back in.

The real problem is that when restarting, there is no video signal to the monitor, no matter the monitor. I heard of this problem before but I dont know how to fix it. Even when I shut all the way down, I have to wait for 10 mins, 20 mins, sometimes hours before being able to turn on the computer and it getting a video signal. I installed some AGP drivers but they dont work. If I go into the BIOS, and change something and save, I hafta turn it off manually and wait an hour then come back and turn it on. Someone said it might be heat, I have the Volcano 7 on there with the heat spreader that came with the FAN, but this has been used before. I have a FAN that hasn't been used yet, that came with my Barton that I will try.

That was the status a few days ago, but now it doesn't get a video signal at all. I heard that it may be a problem with the AGP slot, like it has to be in a certain distance, not too far not too shallow. Could anyone help me, is there a solution. Help?

Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

Have you not a really cheap AGP card you could try, as it sounds very much that the FX card is not working in your setup.

Also check it is seated correctly (although I would expect beeps and non-boots if not seated well).

You must surely have some old AGP card lying around you could try?

Yeah, I've tried it to the same result. I tried a TNT Vanta 16 MB and a Geforce 2 MX 32MB and the same thing happens. I think it is the AGP slot itself, it is very odd looking and flimsy. I heard that on this mobo there is a problem with it, and it has to be in this exact position that is hard to do. So we just got a PCI Geforce FX and it works flawlessly, thanks for the post tho.

ben, Take a look at:
http://hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/2463/

Sounds like you're experiencing the same issue:
-System boots once successfully
-System then only powers up, but does not boot
(You hear the fans, etc, but nothing happens on screen.)

I suggest that you read the full thread there, to fully understand the issue.

Hope the fix works for you as well.
