I have been experiencing several problems while booting my computer with this board. Mainly while cold, it would start when I connected it to the mains. Then an error was reported during the boot, suggesting to check Power Setup (no problems could be identified there).

I suspected the Power Supply and replaced it by a more powerful one: same problem.

The I decided to update the Bios. The installed version was 10.03 and I installed 10.05. The result was still worse: the boot stops at the ASUS logo, with the HDD LED always on. The only way to move forward is to press TAB to enter POST, where I can see that the system is stopped after installing the PNP. Then I enter SETUP, where everything seems to be OK, and Exit without changing anything. The systems finishes then the boot without further problems.

Has anyone experienced similar problems with this board? Maybe someone will be able to help me.

Regards,

I got exactly the same message when booting. After entering the setup I can proceed with no problems.
My configurations is very basic:
300W PS
512 MB DDR
MX440 64 MB DDR
DVD and CD-RW
40GB HD

If you got a solution, please help.

Still no solution on my part. As I told you in a personnal message, ASUS suggests I send back the board to be checked.

Have you tried to upgrade the bios to 10.05? It would be interesting to check whether you experience the same result: the boot stopping at the ASUS logo, and then if you press the ALT key you can see that the boot has stopped afyer installing the PNPs. If you go to setup and then exit the boot proceeds normally.

Where and when have you bought your board? If the symptoms are the same, it could be due to some manufacturing problem.

Domingos

It's a long shot but there's usually an option in the BIOS to reset configeration data, IRQ's etc. It's usually found on the page where you can manually assign IRQ's.

Also if you're not using devices, disable them in the BIOS. I have serial, Parrellel and SATA diabled as this frees up IRQ's

For those who might be interested in this problem, here are my findings:

a) The problems I had with the bios that came with the motherboard (version 10.03) were due to a timing problem ( I suspected this as with a more recent bios (10.05) this was not happening any more, although another problem was still present). I think I had a proof it was a timing problem because it disappeared when I lowered the speed of my CPU. I suspect a low fan speed was reported before it had time to achieve a normal rotation.

b) All problems were over when I downloaded and installed a beta version of a bios issued last July 7th.

So, when I was almost going to disassemble my computer and send my motherboard back to ASUS, the computer is now running normally!

Best Regards,

Domingos

This is how I've fixed this problem (you probabbly get message HARDWARE MONITOR FOUND AN ERROR...):

I've changed my memory clock from AUTO to 266 and after succesfull boot I've changed it to 333 (I hope that you use DDR333-PC2700).
If this doesen't solve your problem, set FSB to 132/33MHZ and try.
If this doesen't solve your problem, change VGA (unbelieveable, but works. I used GF4MX440VTD and when I changed it to GF4MX440SE I made my PC boot normally). All the things that I mentioned here are indirectly connected with power monitoring and that's why you always get this message. If you update BIOS you probbably want solve the problem!
After doing all of the operations mentioned above, start Windows, shut down your PC, wait few seconds (aprox. 30 sec.) and power it up again.

As you can see in my previous post all problems were cleared when I installed the most recent bios (beta version). The change you made by reducing the FSB also results in a slower system and then you have your problem solved (at least identified!). Of course I wanted to use my processor (Athlon AP2600+, FSB 333MHz, 512MB RAM @ 333MHz at full speed, so I only reduced the speed in order to confirm my suspicion.

I will try to confirm this with ASUS.

Same problems here!

I have:

Asus A7V8X-X
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512 MB DDR333
WD 80GB HDD
ATI All-In-Wonder Radeo 9000 PRO

I have version 1005 of the BIOS and I get the "PNP Init Completed" message and then the system halts until I enter BIOS and exit.

Another solution I found is to set the "Quick POST" option off, and then just hit ESC when its testing the memory. In the mean time, I lowered my memory speed to 266 and it works.

ASUS doesn't admit any problems. They are suggesting that it my be bad RAM (this is already the second stick).

Where did you get the beta BIOS version? What is the time stamp on this?

I had already replied to your post, but it seems my message was lost. Here is, more or less, what I said:

With the bios version 10.05 I had the same symptoms you have. I installed the beta version and since then everything goes well for almost a week.
The beta version I have installed can be found in the ASUS website. Look for the motherboard information, then on the left choose "download" in the menu. In that page select "Beta". The only file there is the beta version you are looking for.
Dowload it, and after unzipping add the extension "awd", so that it becomes 1006-001.awd, and place it in:

...\Program Files\ASUS\AsusUpdate

With the utility ASUSUpdate save your current bios, if you have not done it before.
Then use the ASUSUpdate utility to load the new bios.
When you have done it let me know the result!
Contact me in case you have any problems.

Best Regards,

Domingos

Thanks for the info. I have updated, and it appears to have solved the problem. I'm upset that ASUS tech support doesn't confirm this as a problem. Surely, they must have received many calls on this matter now.

I'm anxiously waiting for the non-beta version to come out. I don't like having beta versions running around my system!

Keep me posted if you find anything new!

It's good you have solved your problem. Please confirm whether the system keeps working without problems. I don't either like to install beta versions, and I was rather reluctant in installing this one, as it could result in a dead computer. But I prepared a boot disk as recommended by ASUS, and I was somewhat confident.

I have also informed ASUS about this problem and they asked me to return the board. Then I informed them about the way the problem was solved and I have asked for their comments, but I had no feedback until now.

Regards,

Domingos

It appears that ASUS has finally posted a non-beta BIOS update. The new version is 1006 and it states in the notes that the random hangs have been fixes.

Also, there is a new beta (1006.003). I will probably try the non-beta version.

Let me know how you make out.

Thanks for you information. I did not reply before because I have just returned from a two-week holiday.
I will try the new release version (10.06) and I will let you now the results. If it does not work I will come back to my beta version, as since I have installed it I had no further problems.

I have successfully installed the non-beta (1006) and it seems to work fine. Oddly enough, Windows XP detected new hardware after this upgrade, but I have no clue what it was.

If you find any information on what the "new hardware" is, let me know.

I have now installed the 06 bios (release version) and I had no problems. At the first reboot the setup page was presented, I think for confirmation of the processor clock speed. I just exited and then, as you said, the message "New hardware found..." was presented, and afterwards an invitation for a new reboot. I did this and everything seems normal now. However, as my original problems had to see with a cold start, I will be watching the startup sequence during the next days.
I will keep you informed of any new problems.

Regards,

Domingos
