All you guys mention your hardware, but never the brand of DDR you are using. I was told only certain DDR is certified by Asus for this board and it is really picky....I know because someone supplied me wih Nanya and it doesn't boot, won't turn the PSU fans or CPU fan, and even switching CPUs has no effect.

So I am left with a) dead MObo or b) wrong DDR. I was told Corsair, Kingston make DDR to make this thing fly, but I suppose using the wrong DDR makes the machine either erratic, or in my case, DOA.

I just wish posters would say what DDR they are using - after all it costs more than the Mobo or the CPU !!.

I'm having the exact same problem with the computer hanging just after it says "pnp init completed." I am using one stick of Corsair 256MB PC2700 XMS Platinum... the good stuff!. The memory doesn't seem to be the issue. I think my machine has BIOS version 1003 or 1005. I'm going to try to flash the BIOS to the 1006 I've been reading about.

Hi you guys. I have this motherboard too. I have not even been able to get to the bios yet on boot up. I am using it with an XP2600+ processor. I sent it back, with the processor to the vendor. They tested it and said it tested ok. They did replace the processor though. I got both back today and have been trying to get the thing to boot up. The fan's spin up ok. That is it. Since the memory is the only thing that has not been tested, I have to assume it is a memory issue. The memory is a 1gig generic supposedly high quality stick. From what everybody says about the pickyness of the motherboard memory, it sounds logical it might be that. I ordered a 128 mb Kingston Memory module to test it. I await that memory. I will definetly upgrade to the latest bios based on all your comments when I get the chance. I appreciate all the valuable comments here...

Fellows more times than not,we set our bios too aggressive for timings and turbo or ultra .When we have these problems we need to set bios to default settings and go from there .When we set bios settings we need to do only 1 or at the most 2 settings at a time. This way we know what we done last when it messes up we can undo what we have done without much problems. But when we go into BIOS and set 5 or 10 things we don`t know what we have done . Hope this helps someone.

I have recently got a Asus A7V600.
It is displaying similar symptons to the above, however it will not budge past the 'Pnp init completed' line.
This only happened after I upgraded to the 005 BIOS revision.

Anyone got any ideas?
I've tried replacing everysingle component I can... including the CMOS battery! But to no avail.
Memory is good quality and I've tried other decent brands in it.

Any ideas at all would be much appreciated.

Hi Everyone,

I think my problem is little more severe because I can't even get anything to display. My setup worked fine yesterday. Athlon XP 2000+, Kingston PC2100 512MB, Corsair 256MB, GeForce 2 Videocard. Then today, it just wouldn't POST. I did hear a series of 3 beeps from the motherboard at the very beginning, when I turn the power on. Then, nothing. It seems that when I hit Ctl-Alt-Del on my keyboard, that resets the system.....because I hear the 3 beeps again. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks!

Just a shot in the dark here, but double check that your video card is seated properly and completey. Good Luck...

Try removing some components that could cause the PnP init to fail like HDDs, USB peripherals the BIOS might use in legacy mode and also leave a single DDR stick onboard. Reduce the FSB do not overclock the CPU. Remove the video card power up the system, shutdown, re-install the video and see if this helps. If you get as far as booting windows validate your board with some s/w tools like HWAccess.

Good luck

Oh yea,

Right now, the only thing connected to my mobo right now is the cpu, 1 stick of DDR and the video card. Just the basics. Thanks.

Hi,

I have had the same problem with the a7v8x-x motherboard getting to the PNP INIT COMPLETED abd then just hanging from a cold start, I was beginning to think it was my new maxtor diamondmax plus 9 80gb hard drive as believe it or not I had the same problem in a gigabyte board. But after reading this thread, I upgraded the bios version to 1006 and bingo, no more hang plus the pc now boots faster than before.

I would like to thank everyone on here for helping me with this problem even if it was indirectly.

But just a thought, could it be a hard drive limitation on the previous bios versions as when I used my son's 30 gig hard drive there was no problem (on both the asus and gigabyte boards), hence me thinking the maxtor was faulty, this is about the 20th system I have built and the only problems I have come across seems to be with the 80gb size (the rest of the systems have been with smaller drives) although the drive is working correctly according to maxtor diagnostics. Very strange.

Same problem here, 6 years afterwords!
I have:

Asus A7V8X-X (quite a crazy one, see e.g. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f34/disk-boot-failure-insert-system-d...ost2133152)
BIOS version 1012
Athlon XP 2600+
1 GB Kingston RAM (single stick)
NVidia GeForce4 MX 440 128 MB
HD Maxtor 40 GB (slim)

I changed the CPU cooler because of some strange noises the fan was making, the when I rebooted after the Asus splashscreen it entered the BIOS setup. The strange thing was that when I quit the setup the pc couldn't reboot: it just shut off, but with the green led (mobo) still on (the shut off button functioned, without interrupting the power).
Then I disabled the Quick POST and I found an infinite POST memory test loop: ESC, and then "PNP Init Completed", then BIOS setup again.
I tried everything: loaded setup, disabled some parallel and serial ports and other things, reset ESCS (if I remember correctly the name), enabled/disabled/auto-ed every single BIOS option, removed evrything except video card and HD... Nothing.
Finally I downclocked the CPU and the FSB to 266: I managed to pass the "PNP Init Completed" line (with the memory test loop still there, unless I enabled the Quick POST) and arrived to the Windows logon / welcome screen. When I chose the user, the system shut off in the same manner (green led on).
I tried to set FSB to 200, but nothing.
I removed the HD (which was correctly recognized by POST) and arrived to the "DISK BOOT FAAILURE, INSERT DISK AND PRESS ENTER" obvious error.
I followed the suggestion by Mark Peters (Nov 26, 2003, 10:23am EST) and removed the video card, boot the system, shutdown, reinsert the cart, boot and I managed to boot Windows, but more or less a minute afterwords it shut off again...
I tried again and now it should be on... I'm going to check... No, shut off...
