Boot with a DOS bootdisk & use the "Format" Command.

Just type "format c:" & follow the prompts

Even simpler than that, you could boot up from a DOS bootdisk and then use the FDISK command to remove any partitions on the drive, then, boot up off your XP CDROM.

You can remove the existing partiton, or simply reformat the drive by booting with the XP CD in the drive (you'll have to set the CD-ROM as first boot device is the BIOS first).

I've noticed that when you format from the xp disk - it doesn't seem to delete (permanently) your files, system details etc. Upon re-installing xp pick up your original drivers - so the suggestion of the previous posts would seem appropriate - use fdisk !!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong

No your correct XP doesn't delete all files, this seems to be part in parcel to do with Microsoft's move towards total DRM, which will be worst in there next OS release.

To do a clean install you need to fdisk the drive, after which you can let XP do the rest. Make sure if you have an extended partition that you delete the logical drives inside it first.

Start up computer with bootdisk - (configure boot order through BIOS, if necessary)

At prompt - key in FDISK

Blow away partition

Create new partition

Use your recovery disk that your PC came with.

Just a thought but what is the file in question?

If it is a non Windows related file, you could simply boot into safe mode and delete the file.

If you don't have a DOS bootdisk and you don't want to use your XP disc, install your hard drive on another computer. Go to the control panel. Click on Administrative Tools. Click on Computer Management. Click Disk Management. Right-Click on the drive you want to format. Click on delete partition. After it has been deleted, right-click on it and click on Format.

Cheers.

Or if you have the utility cd that came with your hard drive, you can use that.
The newer drives come with a cd, where as in the past, the utility program came on a floppy disk.
