Need help from a computer wiz?
 Date Written
Matt James Dec 14, 2003, 05:39am EST Report Abuse
I recently had a problem with my comp, the problem was every so often the computer would lock up to the point that I had to turn the computer off(cntrl, alt, del did not work). I had this problem ever since i bought the computer, I selected my own parts and the computer store put it together. It mostly happend during game playing. So i went to the bios and my defualt setting for clock speed was 2.1 ghz, so i lowered it to 1.73 and ever since then I have not had one problem, does anyone have any idea why?

Here are my system specs.. Asus a7v8x-x motherboard, geforce fx 5200 video card, Athlon xp 2700 processor, 512 mb pc 2700 ddr, 350 w power supply, sound max integrated sound, and windows xp.

you need to update your bios, there are some issues, as for why lowering worked ctrl alt and del wounld work cuz of the load on the cpu. by lowing it it lessened the exspected load, this in turn would have lowerd the other setting like ram and fbs.(in some cases)

My first assumption would be that your CPU is overheating. This would explain both the lock-ups and why when you underclock it doesn't happen. I suggest buying a decent heat-sink and fan (the thermaltake Volcano 11 or 12 are really sexy and work wonders on a hot CPU) Make sure there is a thin layer of heatpaste between the chip and heatsink to ensure good contact.

To see if it is the temp - run Asus PC probe on startup - have the poll interval set at 1sec. Watch the CPU Temp - it it climbs and climbs and climbs until the machine locks then that's it.

Ok! I did that exactly the way u said I had my cpu set at 1.73 mhz and then shutdown the comp and changed it to 2.1 (default setting) and ran the asus prob, and to get more work out of the cpu i ran madden 2004 and the temp went from 59c to 66c in about 3 minutes then it froze, so i changed it back to 1.73 and the temp went from 66c back down to 59c.

The CPU Is running very hot, I had the same problems you are talking about. I changed the Heatsink to an Aero 7+ and my temp went down to the mid to high 40's and it has behaved since!

I would suggest getting a better heatsink or possibly some case fans to keep the system temp down!

Are you using Artic Silver (99% micronized silver), careful it's conductive

have you checked the core voltage?
1.65v whats software saying and the bios saying about system, both volts and temps?

what is uOC speeds for your cpu,

You are running a little hot, try running a RAM benchmark and tester. run hardinfo pro and bech mark your PC. have you updated chips set drivers.

Matt James

A little piece of advice from OCGW

You will not, ever, really know your cpu temp from your BIOS

Put your own temp sensor on it with readout and alarm

You will not, ever, really know your PSU's 3 rail voltages from your BIOS

Measure your voltages with a quality Multi-meter

Have a good day.

Hey Matt,
I got a quick test for you to try. Remove the left side panel from your PC & run it both under clocked under load & over clocked and make note of the temps. Let me know if & when it locks up again. Your problem may be something much simpler than a poor HSF, or thermal paste. Though those are important. I'll wait for you to post again after you try this test before I see what if anything changes to your results.

Well i am facing the same problem. When ever i play games , after say 30 mins or so my PC locks up. When i restart , the screen goes blank and no beep from motherboard. But when i unlock the fan & put it back again it starts again. I use PC probe & temp is round 45C & my mobo temp is 35.What could be the reason for this .
Mobo:- P4B
Chip:-P4 1.5 ghz
memory:- 256mb sd ram
Graphic :- geforce fx5200 128 mb
Plz help

AERO7+ isnt so GOOD people says, thats what i think..
Old Glazialtech kept temps in 31-52'C
Now aero7 temps 33-52'C CASE CLOSED!!! buahahaa! just figured the difference! I had case open wit old crap & now its closed & temps are @ same(with 100Mhz cpu speed increase..also LOL... :))
AERO7 is the thing! looks exotic in my lanboy with blueled PSU & 3 VIOLETled fans in case + AQUA neon wire.. you should see it its so pretty..

Oh and AERO7 RPM is almost in minimum, its "silent"!

I believe in firepower..

Hey Fred. I did what you said I took the left panel off and ran the cpu at 1733 mhz and temp stayed at a steady 52 c so then i ran the cpu at 2167 mhz and the temp stayed at around 60-61c and did not freeze, I think it normally freezed up once it got around 66-67 around that range. I was just looking at my case, I only have one case fan and that is on the left panel blowing out , maybe i need to add a couple more fans!!

OK i saw a problem i missed before.

Look at the sound your using... it wrong, go to the nvidia site and download the correct chipset drivers for the Nforce2 which is the on board, it sandstorm tech. I dont know how i missed it, see the north bridge is controlled by this Nvid chip and well if oyu got it wrong then its going to cause problems else where. its not a BIOS up date but a MOBO update. its not hard to find, I have even done it for you, just install this.
