I found that I can't OC the core or memory of my Radeon 9800 Pro (built by ATI... NOT bios-flashed)
more than 15-20 Mhz before artifacts start showin up... then i slapped a THermaltake Giant II with heatpipe (basilcally like the Zalman but this one has a fan right on the core). i lapped all contacts of the heatsink... i used Artic SIlver 5... and there is a fan on my case blowing in right over the AGP slot... i also put 8 tweakmonster BGA ramsinks on the memory using Artic Alumina thermal adhesive... i have 8 total case fans, and the cables are neat. STILL, i am unable to OC the card more than 15-20 Mhz (core and/or mem)

The card also is equipped with Samsung 2.8ns memory chips...

What could be the problem?

Some cards are like some cpu chips they just are about topped out to start with.

The card made by ATI isn't a good OCer

Sapphire and Hercules are better

I can't O/C mine either. Even with a modded HSF that keeps my baby running a helluva lot cooler. Anyone around here that has some input on O/cing built by ATI 9800Pros?

Something else I wouldn't mind some perspectives on. When playing games - their FMV's have colour corruption in the form of smallish square blocks of green appearing on the screen, not so bad that I can't enjoy the cut-scene, but definitely noticeable. They never used to appear but now they appear in all games and even at stock speeds. The wierd thing is there is no corruption at ALL in the actual game itself, only on intro scenes and in-game sequences. And no corruption if i just watch a normal video file through mediaplayer. I've checked card heat, seating, checked drivers, directx everything and still can't figure out what's wrong with it! Anybody with a clue?

My crappy 9600 mem OC's easily 30mhz(core too) without any extra cooling, i havent bothered to try more than 30.

Hey do you know any good programs witch show graphic cards temps?

I believe in firepower..

KKat McFly,
Not all cards are made equal so they won't overclock the same!! It all depends on Cooling and its cheaply made(i.e cheap RAM)!! If you have an OEM card they tend to sux at overclocking due to the fact that they put the bare min. cooling on there cards!!

Here is a sweet link on how to make your 9800NP/Pro run like a 9800XT!!!

DoomGaze,
You need to install an external temp. prob to messure temps on a video card!!

Unless you have an XT which i think has one built in

yes only the XT's have sensors built in.
the 9800NP/P ---> XT Bios flash mod is basilcally worthless. all it does is overclock my card (a little which i can user powerstrip to do anyways) overdrive does NOT work because the NP/Pro cards dont have a sensor!!! AND, the XT bios is made to use 256mb of DDR II, **NOT** 128MB of DDR!!!! its just asking to f$%! up a NP/Pro

Oh well, even if i cant OC much, at least my card looks cooler now with the GiantII and tweakmonsters installed ;)
