I currently have Windows XP Home SP2 and I am required to upgrade to Pro for college.

How do I do this without affecting my programs? Also, how will this affect SP2?

I do not want to lose anything, including the programs. I have two hard-drives, both using NTFS formatting. How will the the slave drive be affected? Please, give me tips and warnings, as I have never done this before. (I have done a lot of Windows XP install related things, except this).

ben, that sounds like bullshit right there, is it stated in a document that u really need XP Pro? Cause only difference is the Networking capability.

I'm sure they mean xp

and they say it because they only support xp, as in, sending the bums out to help you set it up.
At my college, each dorm building had a resident loser, who worked for resnet.
They're so incompetent.

The damned resnet people would shut off access to random people, and say "you must have gotten a virus"
basically, they train monkeys what buttons to press when a certain problem happens, and they just mindlessly go though their little procedures. It's too much trouble to teach them different steps for xp, 98, mac, etc

No, I am reading the document right here, and it says WinXP Pro.

Besides, we already bought it. If it is really nothing more than networking than screw it.

But I thought Professional came with Microsft Office.

You don't need XP Pro. XP Home will work fine. Unless your college is unique among the whole world then XP Home's networking capabilities should be more then good enough to setup networking correctly.

So what's the difference in-between Home and Pro?

If you have to join a domain you will need pro.

"Domain membership - Home Edition cannot be used to logon to an Active Directory domain. For obvious reasons, the Domain Wizard is also missing in Home Edition."

Airman: Couldn't agree more. :) Much less.. but that is like.. well.. Oh wait I have that back wards..:) I can AGREE more.. They are worthless.. useless.. Where is 98SE.. It had potential. :)

I did that with an Upgrade to Pro. After about 200 or so days.. It Froze. Here I thought it wouldn't be possible. BUT!.. After manageing to get it to boot.. I was assked to re-insert Windows CD.. No big deal.. I had a hardware conflict.. (MSI TV Tuner vs ATI 9700 Pro vs nVidia Motherboard.. :) ..just asking for trouble ain't it? :) )..anyways.. I inserted my CD.. bla.. bla.. Was asked to give it my Key. no prob.. Huh? I must have entered it wrong (I have 2 XP Home versions).. try again.. OK maybe I misstyped.. No.. no.. not that either. ..

DL KeyGen.. Of all the keys I generated over the next 79 hours.. NONE were accepted as valid. M$ had no answers.. but by that time I was using Knoppix.. My BIOS chip was .. inconclusive. Appearently Windows messed up my BIOS some how..

I found a link to similar problem afterwards..

http://www.winnetmag.com/Articles/ArticleID/21832/21832.html

Appearently Windows will mess with the BIOS too.. buggerin'... Ahem..
After reciving a new BIOS, and using Knoppix to format the drive.. I was back in bussiness.

This BIOS thing is another reason to switch to Linux or a variant. ;) (Currently awaiting SuSE to be installed on second partition. (Windows wants to be first..) BLA!.. soon it will be.. NON-existant, on my machine.. (except for some games. :) the ones wine won't play. ;)

Later..
