hello all. I am working a computer with a pcchips m754 mobo and winme on the hd. It all works OK, well, almost. I am trying to install a v92 pci modem, netodragon, but the mobo just does not recognize the card. I tried all the pci slots, I cleared cmos, I jumpeded off the onboard modem and also thru the bios setting, I jumpered off the lan port (just in case), I tried a second modem (same modem though)... you name it, with no positive result. I tried an older modem and the mobo did recognize it upon rebooting. I tried to load the driver off the cddisk first, no luck. I wonder if it is a bios thing, the this mobo cannot recognize 2.0 pci cards. any body has got another idea? I am pretty much out of them Thanks in advance. Juan.

To add some further info, I googled around to see if somebody had written about this same topic, but, of course, no luck here either. I looked around pcchips site but I could not find anything relevant. So I am stuck with the idea the mobo cannot *read* 2.0 pci cards or, rather, the backwards compatibility in the pci card is not that real. Any other thoughts out there? Thanks,

Well, as I said, I did try. No luck. The point is, however, windows does not seem to notice it is physically installed. I even tried the add hardware section but still no luck. Any other idea? Tahnk a lot.

Related to this problem is the following question. I have dsl at home so I can receive calls while on the net. Now, I have this computer with a v92 modem on the same line as dsl. since I have call waiting, I should be able to have this popup windows coming up telling me somebody is calling me. Now, will this work since I have dsl? I am not getting anything for which I blame dsl but the only way to be sure would be to take the computer to some relative's who does not have dsl and give it a try. Now, does anybody know for sure if the dsl is preventing the v92 modem from showing the call alert or is it the modem malfunctioning? thanks to all for the answers, Juan.

If the card is PCI 2.0 and your board isn't.. that would be it.
Otherwise, there's a problem with motherboard or the PCI card(s).

[edit]
As to your Call Wait.. I belive that is software dependant.. (or Hardware that has the capability within it's firmwear). Could also be a subscription service from your telco.

Yes, I guess that is the most likely cause. Still, cards are supposed to be backwards compatible with earlier pci specifications, aren't they? Well, anyhow, thanks for the input.

That is backwards.. It is the PCI spec that is backward compatible. Just as with USB 2.0 being backward compatible with 1.0 and 1.1. You can use the older tech items in the newer tech ports/slots.

After all, how could PCI 1.x slot (likely 32 bit) understand the newer 2.0 (64 bit) when the 2.0 version never existed? :) Thus Backward.. compatibility.

That would be a neat trick, indeed.

It is the implementation that is backward compatible. 2.0 is compatible with the lower spec 1.x. Not the hardware being backward compatible. Although the hardware may fit older slots or plugs, There is generally no way for older technology to utilize new.

If your running Windows 98 that could be a problem as well. It was for me on my old PC.

Thank you all for your input. I am sure it is this pci incompatibility the problem. Again, thanks so very many.

You do have a filter on your non DSL line don't you? Disable your Comm and LPT ports to free up some IRQ

No mention of this, but did you try manually installing it in control panel (add hardware)?
If it does find it, then you can install the drivers for it.

Life is too short, make the best of it!
