Hey ok. I think I may have solved my problems. fingers crossed. After reading some asus forums I tried 2 things today. The first was upgrading the mobo bios to version 1011.002 (002 means that it's a beta version I think) that didn't seem to make a difference. But the second thing I did was to upgrade to via's v430a agp drivers (once again an unsupported beta version). And amazing I have just played ut for about 4 hours and no crash. I have also run 3d mark more times today than since I bought the card. So hopefully this keeps on working. Hope this might be useful to someone. And thanks go to those that helped.

I just bought a new computer and when I try to play games it freezes after five minutes or so of working beautifully (I have tried these games so far: Hitman2 / Battlefied 1942 / WinQuake). While frozen the sound also loops a split second or so of sound forever...until I push the reset button. I have downloaded the new ATI Driver and the XP Service Pack 1...still no luck.

My System:
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 512K Cache, 478 Pin, 533Mhz FSB CPU / 1 Gig ram (PC3200) / SyncMaster 957mb Monitor (right now at 75 refresh rate)

I know a good amount about computers but this is my first really powerful one (never had to worry about video cards). Please use easy terms..what is 'FAST DRAW' and 'SHADOWING'...and how do you edit your BIOS? Thanks for any help!...my computer should really be able to handle this.

Oh...and I have a Radeon 9700 Pro

Also...what is this:

Thanks.

I have similar issures.
This seems to be an issue Mostly with Gigabyte Mobo GA-7VAXP and the 9700. ALOT of people are sufering. Visit http://www.viaarena.com forum for more dissatisfied people. I have tried all the new drivers for ATI and VIA. I have had them send me the newest Rev. of the actual 9700 board. Still lockups (infinite loop). There latest advice is to start changing bios settings one by one. So my question to you guys is...
What is Fast command?
and what is AGP 3.0 calibration cycle?
Thank you in advance an good luck to all of you. This 'could' be an awsome card!

How do you get into your BIOS? I have a SOYA Dragon mother board. My monitor does not turn on until the window screen shows up. I want to try and turn Shadowing off...someone above said that might work. I also just FLASHED by BIOS...still no luck. Also my computer is 450W.

There must be a solid fix for this somewhere!

adam. What brand is your video card? What version video card drivers do you have. You can find this if you right click on your desktop- properties-settings tab-advanced-options tab. It should display catalyst (the name of ATI's drivers) version. Your problem sounds very similar to mine. However I had one game that was working which was the only reason that I didn't just think that the graphics card was faulty.

Only 'Disable Quick Resolution Fetuare" and "Reduce DVI Freq..." are UNchecked.

I also just installed DX9 from: http://www.ati.com/products/pc/catalyst/dx9demos.html

This time it just restart the system...but now I am going to try it with 'Shadowing' back on, FAST WRITE enabled, and with only an aperture of 64mb(the original settings I had before I started messing around)

I just hope I can get this worked out. This is my first 'powerful' system and it will be nice when I can sit down and crank everything up without it freezing.

P.S. Graphics are AWESOME from what I see before it freezes that is ;-)

I know exactly how you feel. I'm just lucky that I waited until I finished uni to get my new stuff, because I've spent the last week solidly scouring the internet looking for any fixes. ok sorry I didn't reply to that message you sent me. I can't exactly remember what it said. But all I can say is that downloading the AGP 430a driver fixed everything for me. It is used for all via chipsets so your processor shouldn't matter.
http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=2
It is wierd because it says that it is included in the 4 in 1 version 4.43 which I had already tried. I have also read that via is coming out with a new 4 in 1 driver which contains the AGP440 driver which is said to have fixed some peoples problems. Some other aspects which I was going to try were as a last possible resort bumping up the agp voltage a little bit. You have the same catalyst drivers as me so that shouldn't be a problem. You might want to stay clear of direct x 9 for the moment though since it is still in beta stages atm as far as I'm aware. But I don't think you can get rid of it if you've installed it already. without uninstalling windows. In the end Fast Writes is on and I'm not sure what the apeture size is set to. 256mb I think. But these have also been suggested as cures as i think you've probably read in the viaarena forums. If all else fails call up the people you bought it from. Or just take it to a reliable computer shop and let someone else deal with your problems. I know this would definitely be a last resort for me but I admit I have done it once before and it semi fixed that problem.

I can tell you though. It's worth the trouble of getting this beast to work. Especially with your cpu and all. I only have an athlon 1800+ and I can run UT2003 with 16x anistropic filtering and 6x anti-aliasing at the highest resolutions that I can. :) don't give up.

Oh no...I ain't going to give up. I have seen this card in action and want it BAD. Okay, this is what I did. I uninstalled my previous driver, restarted in safe mode, installed 430a driver, restarted again (also went into BIOS and change aperture size to 256, then started playing game. Almost EXACTLY (kind of funny that it almost does it in the second) 5 minutes into the game....FREEZE!!! Man...and it was a good 5 minutes too. 32 players and 50 ping (Battlefield 1942).

Okay...I am desperate now (and I don't want to take it somewhere and spend an arm and a leg for someone to look at it). How do you bump up the AGP voltage? Is this safe? How much? I am totally ignorant about this..remember, this is my first powerful video card and computer...but I do know my way around "computers" themselves so I am willing to follow instructions and try anything. Also..when I was in the BIOS I saw these:

AGP Master 1 WS Write disabled
AGP Master 1 WS Read disabled
DBI Output for AGP Trans disabled

What are these and should any of them be enabled?

Thank you for your help so far...I just hope that I can get this resolved soon.

Right now my hwdoctor says that the AGP is it 1.47V

More info:
Hardware acceleration is to FULL
I have Write Combining Enabled
Wait for vertical sync is set to application preference
OpenGL and Driect3d are at 'Balanced'

Also, after installing 4.30a...there are only 4 options in the 'options' tab. 'Disable quick resolution feature' is the only one that is not selected.

I also have my monitor at 1024 x 768 32bit (refresh rate of 75 )(syncmaster 957mb)

Maybe this information will help.

How do you change from 8 to 4 AGP...maybe this will help the lockup until a new and better driver comes out...I have heard that performance wise there is almost no difference.

ok yeah I wouldn't go much higher with the voltage. I haven't ever actually done this myself so yeah. I'm really not sure what all those other agp settings in bios do. But I think that the way to make sure that you're using agp 4x instead of 8x is to install ealier VIA drivers which do not support agp 4x. And yeah the difference in bandwidth between 8 and 4 is less and less noticable with the more onboard ram the video card has. I read a review with the radeon 9700 pro and it's codecreatures mark didn't change with agp 4 and 8.

Yea, i'm still having the error too.
Have tried lots of changes and installs and de-installs of every driver for VIA and ATI.
so far the only thing that works is unistalling the VIA driver altogether which leaves me with no AGP acceleration. Still running a 9099 on 3Dmark2001. Not too bad. Pretty much the only way we are going to fix this for sure is for one of these two companies to come out with a new driver fix. I have been told by ATI to start uninstalling things and reinstalling driver afterwords. Not helping much.

Thats the same error we are all getting. If some of you are just locking up until you press the reset button, go to C:windows\logfiles\watchdog\ and you'll see all the error reports for it. We are all in the same boat. Microsofts knowledge base blames it on the video drivers while ATI kinda sorta blames it on microsoft. i'm getting pretty digusted.
