>> Re: ATI Radeon 9700
My machine was locking up when running graphics intensive stuff like GTA3, I reinstalled windows 2000 and the latest catalyst drivers to no avail. Installing the VIA Hyperion 4.45 last night and that hasnt helped either. Turning the FSB down has stopped it locking up now (some of the time) I've set all the ATI control parameters to no AA, no anisotropic filtering etc, turned of AGP performance control in the BIOS, and even started GTA3 in 800X600X32 to see if its is "stress" that is causing it to wig out. It no longer crashes totally, but does something really really peculiar with drawing polygons, they leak all over the place, strange affects but keeps on running. It gets worse until the screen looks like "digital vomit". Have a look at http://www.krisl.net/fooked-gfx.jpg.

I'm really sad that this is happening (sniff) its a monstrous PC and its a shame its happening. :-(

I would agree with a couple of the diagnoses that people have shared in this forum, it HAS to be heat dependant, (from cold it takes longer for symptoms to occur). This is a rather analogue assumption, but it rings true. The other point I think is important is that the voltages will be a problem if it is heating up which I agree with. Warming up capacitors for example changes their capactive characteristics. I think it is a combination of those two.

Solutions?
The next thing I'm going to try I think unless any one has a better Idea is to mount a shed load of heatsinks on the RAM IC's and point as many fans as I can at it, then test it.

Anyone of the opinion that it might be electrical interference causing the problems?

KrisL

I don't know how to change my AGP slot (nothing in bios that I can see). I am guessing that it is at 8x since I have all the new drivers and my mobo supports it.

The best solution for the mighty Radeon 9700 Pro is to put it gently back in its package. Then buy another card, plug that one in, and start playing. It makes all your headaches go away.

That was my only solution. I had the card for 35 days trying absolutely everything that's been posted on this board. Nothing worked, the store won't take it back after that long (of course), so I charged up a GF4 4600. Plugged it in, it works great, and all my problems are solved. And yes, my credit card company is happy to.

So much for the bleeding edge... the only thing I regret is that I can't bill ATI $369 for the pleasure of spending countless hours on this.

to everybody,

i have been to so many boards dealing with this problem the last six weeks

i read about a new game, excellent graphics, buy the "best" graphics card on the market, ... and it does not work - no way

my summary, and i hope it helps somebody

my setup

athlon xp 2400+ not overclocked
radeon 9700 pro not over/undercocked
1,5 gig ram pc 2700
dvd-burner
cd-rw
2 ide drives on ide
hauppauge nexus dvb-s card
mobo asus a7v8x (latest bios beta 1011.005)
psu 420 watts

this bios does not allow me to change agp to less than 8x !!!

(via kt400 chipset seems to be the most difficult to have)

drivers:

via 4 in 1 v. 4.45 (latest)

dx9
catalyst 3
(omega drivers do not work on my system very well)

xp sp1 all ms updates

agp:

128 mb aperture size
fastwrite off
agp 8x
agp-voltage 1.6 Volts

this fixed the problem with all d3d games - ALL !!

for open-gl i use sci-tech gl-direct and switch between

- use default driver and
- use sci-tech driver

depending on the game

i do not have any special heatsinks and stuff

but on voltage 1.5 i could even open the case and put a big kitchen fan
next to the pc and it would still freeze

at voltage 1.6 no prob

this should at least help the people with my asus/via/ati setup

all others might find a way to nail the problem

if you try radeonator 2.0 and underclock your 9700

then you can be pretty sure it a and/or heat/voltage problem

Where did you get the catalyst 3 driver? Ati only has 2.5 (unless I am missing something). I am going to try all of your settings to see what I get. I am to the point that I would light candles and repeat chants while dancing around the system....well, maybe not yet.

RiHa-

I tried what you said. I downloaded Radeonator 2.0, installed it, restarted, ran it, set both to 270Mhz, clicked applied, clicked okay, opened game up, froze after about 4-5 minutes.

This is my system info from Radeonator 2.0:

Processor Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.8 GHz
Operating System Inwdows NT 5.1 (Build 2600)
DirectX Version 4.09.00.0397
Amount of RAM 1,048,048 KB
Free Memory 76%
Videocard (GPU) Radeon 9700/9500 Series (Omega 2.3.55)
Catalyst Version Omega 3.0
Driver Version 6.14.01.6255
Release Version 7.81-021213a-006924C-ATI

Also, I tried AGP volts of 1.56 and 1.66 (what the actual voltage was). It seemed like the higher I went in voltage, the louder and uglier the noise from my speakers were when it froze.

What should your Vcore be at?

Hope someone can see something that I am missing and help me out. Thanks so far.

Standard retail radeon 9700 pro cannot take much more.......they dont overclock well. I mean yeah if you can provide adiquate cooling such as a water cooler then yeah your gonna get a little more out of it, but from an overclockers point of view you will have to switch out the ram chips and the video bios in order to get much higher then stock settings with any stability. As is the case with the ocsystem level 2 radeon 9700 pro-
http://www.ocsystem.com
There you will find one ready for over clocking.......btw...soon I will be dedicating my koolance exos to my radeon 9700pro while the chip is cooled by the prometeias phase exchange cooler.
http://www.iceepc.com/index.htm?c30.htm&1
Once done I will switch the bios and post results!

Okay...I am trying to change my AGP speed from 8x to 4x in SMARTGART but whenever I restart (as requested) it goes back to 8x. I also tried lowering my AGP Core and Mem to 220 MHz (with Radeonator) just for fun (you dont have to restart for it to take effect right?)....still about 5 minutes into it it freezes. Anyone have any more suggestions other then buying a new card. I don't mind running this computer a little slower...I just want to be able to run graphic programs. Well...enough messing around today...time to go to bed and get some energy for another long wasted day trying to fix this problem.

I was having the exact same problem as you and have the exact same processor. My problem wasnt the card like i thought it was it was my cpu. i fixed it by realizing i need to download pentium 4 chipset drivers. I dled those and it worked. also the radeon people(ati tech support) said that with my comp i should set the graphics aperature size to 64 mb. now my system runs fine with 15300+ 3d marks on mad onions 3d mark. this might help if you do this and it doesnt set your cpu frequency to 132 instead of 133. Then im almost positive it will work. and to quickly answer a future question since u cand change frequency in your bios i dont know how but im sure u can find a way.

Well guys, I have figured out my problem... I just dont know how to implement a permanent fix.

If I open my case, and aim a large house fan into my computer, it works perfectly! No lockups at all!

Bobby Marshall- When I try to install the Intel Chipset Software (Version 4.10 Build 1012, it says:

"The Intel Chipset Softare Installation Utility requires a supported chipset platform running on a supported operating system. Check the system Requirements section of the README.TXT file for more information."

In the README.TXT file it says I need " Windows* XP 5.10.2600 (Original Release)". I have Windows XP Home version 2002 with the Update.

Am I totally missing something? Am I trying to run the wrong thing?
I only have 2 fans on my system right now...I guess I should add more....I saw that you had 7. Could it still be a heat problem? What you said is really interesting me. I hope you check this soon. Thanks so far.

Not Sure if this is Graphics Card Related?

My screen seems a little screwed up. From left to right the words
get and resolution gets smaller. Like the right hand side has a smaller
Res than My left side. Pretty annoying! Also, It keeps resetting so I
can not get my screen to take up my entire monitor. I am at 100% for
horizontal width! I keep changing Resolution to different settings.
At 800x600 seems to be the only one that holds a consistent setting.

I have messed with the refresh rate and resolution only, to try to fix it.
I have a 22inch CRT monitor from Compaq.
Thanks
John

Ok here is another work around...

I can use Radeonator to underclock my video card... no lockups! I set it around 250 Mhz for it to work...

I definitely have a temp issue on the video card.
