I have seen a post somewhere (don't know if it was this site or another) but someone had RMA'd there card about 3 times before they got one that worked and did not crash or freeze.

I think I might of found a solution (after reading someone elses post)...going to test many games to be sure. All I did was format my computer totally then installed these drivers in the order listed:

Newest 4 in 1 Drivers
DirectX 9
Catalyst 3.0
ATI Control Panel
XP Service Pack 1

*You have to restart between EVERY installation.

Didn't want to try it at first because my system was so nicely set up but went ahead anyways. Just finished playing links2003 for 30 minutes, a game that froze about 20 times on the first five minutes. Also redownloading 3dMark2001 to see what my speed actaully is.

Either way, I will report back here to let you all know what I find out. Hopefully it is good news and not the regular....oh, I think I found a fix....never mind, froze again....back to the drawing board.

T S hit it on the head that this is a power problem, but not necessarily with your supply itself. RiHa hit on it in his post.....and after tinkering around....All my problems vanished.

I was having the very same problems listed in this thread. Crashing Random Reboots boots, hard locks......moments of stability, then all hell breaking loose. I was absolutely frustrated. The after reading RiHa's post, I made one change in BIOS I had never made. I set the AGP Voltage from AUTO to 1.6 and POOF!!!! All my problems disapeared.

I believe T S and possibly ATI (I hate admitting it) were right on this one. I think the power setting for AGP Voltage, by default AUTO, in BIOS may be too low. Set it for 1.6 and see what happens. It worked like a charm for me. Of course different MOBO's, different BIOS, but my experience is that most MOBO's have that exact setting and 9 times out of 10, it is set to auto.

My Set-Up: (A lot of this I added just for the 9700 pro ie. Koolance and power, neither of which fixed my problem)

Koolance PC2-601BLW Case w/Enermax 430W PS
AMD Athlon 2400XP

Okay...here are they results of reinstalling drivers in a specific order after a fresh install of XP home.

Now I can play BattleField1942, Winquake, and Links2003 (haven't tried anything else yet) as long as I want with graphics set on the highest. X-plane still freezes if I set all the graphics on high...may try and up the AGP voltage to fix this (But I use this program for realism...not graphics anyways).

******Now...about the benchmark tests (3dmark 2001 SE)...it always freezes on the last part of the 'Nature' test no matter when I run it. I can run only that one and 20 seconds in...freeze. I can also run EVERY OTHER test without any problem. Anyone know what is going on? Like I said...I will also try to up the voltage. Also, in my bios I have two selections set to 133Mhz....would it help changing any of these?

Well, so far I am happy that I can play some games without freezing!!!

Okay...I got benchmark to not freeze...upped the voltage to 1.6 (actually 1.55). This is what I got (I am new at this so I don't really know exactly what these mean).

Just with all computer defaults and settings:
13655
13655
13695

When I upped my DRAM CLOCK from 133 to 166 I got:
14052
14372

When I upped my DRAM CLOCK from 166 to 200 I got:
in the low 12000's..forgot exactly...didn't save.

So...are these good, bad? Is it safe to have my DRAM Clock set to 166Mhz...since it gives me a better score. Are these good enough? Is there anything else I can do to make them better?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Going to try X-plane again to see if the voltage helps with that.

What brand is your pc3200? Most 3200 will run more aggressive timings at 333. You should be able to find some good overclocking advice or ram timings for your stuff here:
http://www.overclockershideout.com
I would love to help but I have zero familiararity with intel mobos.....but I know that synching the fsb with the ddr brought me up by 2000 3dmarks. Of course Im running xms3500cs with settings like 2-2-2-5-1t-2 bank.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5494640

Oh yeah I did up the fsb and ddr clock to synch at 179 but thats not much of an overclock....waiting for prometeias vaporizer before I get to intense.

Okay...the only two things I have in my bios (I think) are "Frequency in 1 Mhz Stepping" and my DRAM clock speed. Right now they are set to 133 and 166. I put in the settings that OCSystem said for PC3200 400 SDRAM (what I have). When I up the 133 to 140...it closes 3dMark when I try to run a benchtest. When I put it past 140...system doesnt even boot (have to reset the cmos). Right now my AGP voltage is around 1.57 and my DDR is 2.61. Vcore is running around 1.47. My CPU temp runs around 39C while my CHA temp is around 45C. Now...I am more of a software person and don't know if this is the end of the road or not. Any help in analyzing or helping me with my system would be greatly appreciated.

My 3dMark scores are in the low to mid 14,000's with these settings.

after everything i told u to do. with the chipset drivers and everything. on my comp it would work till i changed the fsb to 132. i got better 3d marks with it at 132 than at 133 i think because at 133 and multiplier of 21 my comp thought the cpu speed was 2.81 but 133 times 21 is 2793. so the math doesnt match. but at 132 the math matches with what the computer thinks it is. now i get 15300+ 3d marks

Okay...my bios settings restrict me to these settings:

Fequency in 1 Mhz Stepping
Min: 133
Max 255

**Even though in the manual (parts shown below) says "The SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite supports a wide range of CPU FSB frequency settings:
100~132MHz, 133~255MHz"

So.....how do I get around this?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CPU SETTINGS
The SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite provides the user with a very complete and
convenient CPU setting environment. The CPU settings are all adjusted
through the special SOYO COMBO page in the BIOS, therefore rendering
the use of jumpers obsolete.
CPU FSB Frequency
The SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite supports a wide range of CPU FSB
frequency settings:
100~132MHz, 133~255MHz. (CPU FSB Frequency can be setup by 1MHz
increment)
This ensures that the SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite has an overwhelming
overclocking potential.
CPU Multiplier
The SY-P4X400 DRAGON Lite supports a wide range of multipliers:
10X ~ 24X depend on CPU.

radeonator tells me 'can't connect to r6probe, overclocking and startup overclocking will be disabled.' anyone know what this means.

i've had the freezing problem since i installed the 9700tx, and iam wondering whether the 'power extension' cable that comes with the card is important, because i don't have one and simply use the existing power cords in the computer. would this affect anything.

also, how can i change the voltage and what should i set it to.

appreciate responses.

the power cable that you get with the 9700 is basically a power lead extention you can buy off the shelf at almost any computer store, so the floppy drive power lead in your system will do no harm at all to the card since it's the same power source it requires.

See bio for system setup.

nothing but errors, shutdowns and restarts since i got this damn card, can't use radeonator because of yet more unexplained errors, so i guess my only option is to either get a new motherboard, or get a new card. does anyone have any final suggestions as to what i can do about this?

got a 500w atx psu today, even ran the system bare with just the card and my hdd powered up. still had lockups just like before. might take the whole thing down to the shop but i expect that i'll be paying them money for a diagnostic just so they can tell me what i already suspect; there's some kind of incompatibility b/w the 9700 and my mobo. iam going to ask them to put another stick of 256ddr, see if it's not perhaps that i dont have enough ram, or just have bad quality ram.

if it is the mobo iam def. not dishinglout for a new one, but i will just get a gf4 and tell ati to go f**k themselves for making such a picky device that causes people to throw hundreds of dollars down the toilet. a**holes.
