Well, I tried disabling the on board sound, moving my PCI sound card to slot 5, moving my RAM to the other IDE slots...and STILL NO LUCK! I am really running out of ideas...the only one left is running 4X....but I still can't figure out how to do that. This is completely absurd.

I agree, the only thing i found that works is uninstalling the VIA agp drivers altogether. But then you lose you AGP acceleration.
Without AGP drivers 3dmark2001---9099
With AGP drivers but risk of lockup-------10789

Not the best idea but what can i do til someone finds a fix?

When I try uninstalling the driver and go off windows default...it won't even let me open Battlefield 1942. It just beeps and me and closes in a blink of an eye.

ok, i guess mainly the people who have problems are those who
have chipsets other than intel? i have a via chipset, and have seen
complaints from sis chipsets as well.

so i guess the ati 9700pro works WELL with intel chipsets?

correct me if im wrong...

its not a patch, its just the newest drivers. And i lockup on a lot more games than that. Reading that artivle on VIA again, im gonna try switching DDR slots because it says they all use different resources. Then im going for ANOTHER fresh XP install with the VIA drivers and Video card and one game being my first install to see if I get errors then.
I'll let you guys know how it went

Well, I have moved my ram cards away from port 1, audio card away from IDE 1-3, and did a fresh install (after formating) of XP home...and it still froze. I am out of ideas. I guess I will just wait until ATI decides to make something happen.

Does anyone know how to change a Soyo Dragon P4X400 board to 4x instead of 8x? They board automatically hides the option when you have an 8x installed and I am having trouble finding another way.

Thanks

I said this above. But you could try going back to an earlier version of the via agp driver which dosn't support agp 8x.

I tried looking but I couldn't find the newest driver right before they included 8X and I don't want to use something extremely old. Do you have any idea?

OK guys. Heres the latest from me.
I did a full format.
Installed windows XP pro
Install VIA 4in1 4.43
Installed the Radeon 9700 pro and the newest drivers and control panel (not the Dx 9 ones)
Plugged in my soundblaster live and let windows install its default drivers for it only

Installed Morrowind.
Installed newest patches for morrowind.

Played.
Man did it fly. It ran so fast and so smooth.
Then it locked up.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
I'm getting so #%^$@ sick of this!

I have not installed anything else!
No cordless mouse/keyboard
no sidewinder strategic commander.
I didnt even install the VIA USB drivers.
