>> Re: ATI Radeon 9700
Hey peeps, ive just gotten my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro to stop freezing in all of my games. Wanna Know How? I changed the AGP setting in Bios From 8X to 4x, and changed the ATI Smart Gart from 8x to 4xI also have the Catalyst 3.2 Driver Set, Direct X 9.a, I figured out y 8X is so buggy, i got a 1st gen board that has 8x on it,which is the ASUSP4S8X 1st gen means first to have new features, but wasnt stable under 8x. If i were u id wait for a major fix on agp 8X. Go for the newest boards if u can afford it.

>> antec 550
dude, I must say I've never been a true fan of any of antecs stuff but hey.....I just finished testing my oc'ed system and found that the fluctuations on the 3.3rail where holding me back by some 10 fsb.....well I thought my vantec stealth 550 was pretty stable untill then, anyway, I bought a true control 550 from antec which allows you to adjust the voltages from a 5.25" baybus controller that it comes with and this thing rocks....thought I would gain 10mhz fsb but I ended up getting 13.
Inncidentally, while testing the overclocked 9700pro I noticed that even with a strong psu you voltage will drop as much as 30percent while under load on the card itself. I soldered in some impedence free displays for voltage to see the voltages from the variable resistor settings. Then I set the voltage to 1.91 and then oc'ed the core to 418, ran 3dmark and watched the voltage drop to 1.8-1.79v. Truth be told this card is way power hungry since this is a 520watt psu with hardly anything attatched to it...(3 psu's in the system). Dont try that without the volt mods, cooling, and shim removal.

John do u know if u have the AGP set to 8x, because if u do Change it to 4x to see if it fixed the problemIve done it and it fixed problem, run games, even tho ur board is AMD based and mine is Intel Based(ASUS P4S8X)both boards seem to have problems with 8x agp, i guess they are first gen boards(first ones to have agp 8x), By the way check Gigabyte for Newer Drivers, Check ASUS for Newer Drivers, Check your Sound Card Website for Newer Drivers.
I have ATI All In Wonder 9700 Pro but that doesnt matter because they run off Same VPU. One More Suggestion , Buy a board that is currently Brand New if u can afford it.

the 9700 aiw cannot run at 8x period, while the 9700 just has issues with. now, while i cannot offer you a solution to running it at the full 8x i CAN tell you that there are extremely miniscule differences in speed between 8x and 4x. in reality, graphics cards have yet to take advantage of the power of 4x agp and thus the agp is not the bottle neck and there is no use in attempting to improve it.

I just bought an AIW to hold me over till my rma returns.....ic lifted while pulling the alumin plate off.......anyway, so far I have run it at 8x on these boards; epox 8rda+, epox 8rga, and asus a7n8x. Each of these boards do in fact run it at 8x with fast writes enabled and oc'ed I might add.
power supplies used??? 1 enermax 465vp, 1 vantec 520 stealth, and 1 antec 550 true control.
ATI rma times suck by the way as I sent mine out overnight about 3 weeks ago.

forgot to add, the difference may be in the drivers or added software though since I am not running anything other then the software that I was running on the standard 9700pro. The only reason that I bought this one is because I have a circuit city card and they didnt have the non aiw card in stock....once my rma returns then I will just return this one...lol!

NEW DRIVERS! Go to ATI.com for the Catalyst 3.4 driver set.
Also Another website has ATI compatable Drivers but use with caution. These drivers are meant to speed up games, and fix graphic corruption in games, not for Benchmarks, http://www.omegacorner.com, Read everything about them

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/8/1/a81adbcd-3212-4cb...redist.exe
copy link to Addressbar.
That is the direct download link, recommendation is to use a download manager Like Mozilla,DAP, Leechget etc.

Recommendations to all that are having lock ups and auto restarts with RADEON/All IN WONDER 9700 pro.
1.Get Newest Motherboard drivers and BIOS.
2.Get Newest Catalyst Drivers for Vid Card.
3.Try a different Motherboard if u really want AGP 8X
4.Do online Tech support Sheet with Motherboard company(AKA Complaint sheet)
5. Try Different Ram(DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES-like 266MHz with 333MHz)
6.Change AGP frequency from 4x to 8x in BIOS and in SMARTGART.
7.TRY Different Power Supplies(300 WATT is minimum)
8.Update to Direct X 9.a

http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/8/1/a81adbcd-3212-4cb...redist.exe
Direct Download Link(Starts Automatically) it is the Redistrutable file(31.22 MB)

9. Register ATI Radeon/AIW on ATI website (Get 30 days of Free Tech Support Calls)

something else to help.....I just posted this http://www.docmodgod.com/9700volt.html

From there you can test the various power points on your card to make sure that you dont simply have a bad card!

Can anyone help me out a little im having some problems with my comp...... who would of guessed.... but the problem i have is that when ever i open any game what so ever like enter the matrix or total war or need for speed 2 it crashes a few seconds into every time. I cant even run a benchmark with it because it locks up. Im thinking that my power supply is not putting out enough juice 300 watts i think i need about 450+ i do have about 6 fans that run off my power and one is a 120 mm. I tried unhooking everything that drew power and i made some progress i was able to get to a menu in the game before i freezed. Funny thing thou is that i can play videos on it well not videos but like the need for speed video where the race goes on, and it dosent frezze there it only happens when i get into the menu's.

here is what my system is
Amd 1700+
Soyo sy-k7ada v1.0
Radeon 9700
896 ddr pc 2100 PNY
Windows xp Pro
Driect X 9.0a
Western Digtal 20 gig 7200 RPMS
Sony 52X cd rom
300 watt power supply
sound blaster live 5.1
(any guess on what i should score on 3d mark once i get it working)

Ty for any help guys :)

first guess would be psu, second would be mobo, third would be ram timings. What stepping is your 1700+....you could have some fun with that chip! Not to stray outside the point, the logical order to resolve your issues is above....if you get a new psu and that isnt the problem then at least you will have a new psu to power your next purchase....a new mobo.
For example nforce2 mobo reccomendations are no less then 350watts. That is assuming you are using the most basic stuff in your system. Add the 9700, a cdrw, and a descent hdd and you could easily use a 400watt psu. With those fans I would say its fair to assume that you are oc'ing that 1700+......that requires more juice. I wouldnt use less then a good 450watt psu for your setup so that you at least have some head room for future improvements!
