36 pages!! And I have read every post. Now to the point.
I was hoping for some expert advice about which ATI video card to uprade to. I have the following hardware. P4 1.7Ghz, Intel Monterrey w/ Intel A 850 chipset motherboard(4X AGP), 768Mb RDRAM PC800, ATI Radeon 7200 VE video card, 40 Gb 100ATA WD HD, Sound Blaster Live Value, CDRW.
Would it be worthwhile to go to a 8X card? With this 2 year old Gateway should I go to the 9500 to 9600 range?.
I ordered a new computer with a 9700pro, 2.6 Ghz P4, 40 Ghz ATA 133 HD, SB sound card, CD reader, on an ABIT motherboard and guess what? Infinite loop! I had it for a total of 4 days in 2 1/2 months before Xtech in Ohio gave up on it and sent my money back. If I can improve my video card I will be satisfied with this setup for a while. I don't relly want to invest the money a 9700 or 9800 would cost for this computer.

consider the 9600 pro since it has been rebuilt the same way the 9800 has....this meaning that if you study the 2 cards(9800 and 9600) side by side with the 9500 and 9700 then you see where ati is admitting their mistakes.
Its funny to see some changes that directly relate to complaints on this thread. For example.....someone further back had complained about artifacts and then when he looked in his case he saw the heatsink and fan hanging from the card. Ati has tackled that one with new metal pins that hold the new heatsink on.
Next, we have the new heatsink, attatched with a better thermal paste and redesigned with a stepped down center that actually coontacts the core even with the shim in place!. They also added heatsinks to vreg chips for the vcore. Amazing how this seems to directly attack alot of the problems in these forums.

Evidentally ati has decided to surpass the R400 for the R420....releasing both but stopping the funding for the development of the 400 to $150million

well, You wont truelly know the impact and how it pertains to your system untill you've tried it. You do know that along with various opengl references, direct 3d, and optimized instruction sets for different cpus, that some improvements will have been made however it seems that the 9700pro also has its diferences with the agp bios. That is depending on what version you have. I have several from a frist release board to a brand new 2 week old board....and havent had any problems with either one on any mobo that Ive tried them on. Im using a fully upgraded version of xp though. On the other hand I have had friends with bad 9700pros that I swaped out and installed in a knowingly compatible system of mine and it turned out that for what ever reason their card was just bad.
Looking at the difference and improvements they made to the 9800pro I would say that you could develope a pretty good troubleshooting list.
1) adequate case cooling
2) good contact between the core and the heat sink
3) a good quality power supply
benching differences between 8x and 4x arent very much so I wouldnt be too worried if you dont have an agp8x board. :-)

I purchased the DFI AD77 Infinity board and had this same issue. Someone posted earlier that they could not get the Radeon 9700 Pro to work with this board. Here is a fix that worked for me:

First I upgraded to the latest bios, which reports many Radeon 9700 Pro fixes, but that did not help.

However, in the Catalyst driver "SMARTGART" settings tab, disabling fast/write AND setting AGP to 1x fixed the hard lock-up in 3D-acclerated games for me. Try this with other boards and report if it works.

I might try another board if I am forced to run all games at 1X. One of the main reasons I upgraded to the board, after all.

When I turn my computer on from a cold start, it seems as though my monitor is not picking up the feed from the video card.

I can get an image when I press ctl-alt-del and select Normal startup. After that, everything works fine.

I am working with a 9700 PRO.

I have tried the latest drivers, different settings in the multi monitor function, flashed bios, different directX drivers, windows updates (plug-and-play).

Can anyone help me?

hum, you are the first person to bring up that problem and funny thing is that I have had that problem since the frist 9700pro. it doesnt always happen but only sometimes right??? I ussually just hit the input button on my monitor and the monitor reaquires the signal. Actually now that I think about it...that only happens to my overclocked systems. Looking back I can remember every overclocked system doing that but the system that I am typing this on has never done it....strange. I am using the DVI out on all of my cards too so I doubt thats it....maybe its a synch problem.:-(

ATI CARD TURNED OUT NOT TO BE MY PROBLEM ***READ***

alright, I was just typing a HUGE lengthy post on this issue, but then the stupid page decided to refresh itself and I lost everything, so I'll make this short and sweet.

I thought my ATI card was my problem, since I was having the same problem as everyone else:

* system hangs/freezes

* system crashes to desktop

* systems reboots on its own

It turned out that my problem was a Vantec Copper Heatsink & Fan. The fan had messed up the connector on the Gigabyte mobo I had, and it was no longer spinning. The copper heatsink kept my cpu cool enough that I could get into windows and play for 10 seconds to 10 minutes before having trouble.

Then the cpu would reach the point where the mobo rebooted everything. That damn fan blew out my fan controller when I tried plugging it in there, and also took out a couple of motherboards at a local OEM shop that was trying to help me with the problem.

So, while I had believed that my generic ram and 350W generic power supply weren't sufficient (and I have 4 blue LED fans, a fan controller, cd-rw drive, 120GB seagate drive, 2.4Ghz cpu, neon sound activated light, etc.) it was just my cpu overheating cause the fan wasn't spinning.

I have since updated my negative review on epinions.com to reflect this change and I apologized to ATI tech support for wasting their time. I hope my story helps some of you, be sure to check EVERYTHING cause you really never know. :)

word up.....nice to meet an honest individual willing to admit mistakes! Happy to hear that you have identified your troubles and cured them! Now you can enjoy the pure bliss of running a card like the 9700pro.
BTW to all.....just burned in the 9800 pro 256 at 510.75/409.5 at 1.81volts core and 1.8vddq in bios, consistant stable full bench scores of 21,414 with amd. so if your thinking twice about the 9800 upgrade...dont!
