Any Major Dfference Between SP1 and SP1a, but anyways with the RAM i have Tried all Different Brands, Frequencies and No Luck with this board or the Previous one, Im thinking about going AMD, Whats the Fastest AMD System u got with the Radeon 9700 Pro , because id like to build my own.(Wont GO 64BIT until it has been fully developed) Oh Another Thing On the ASUS Website there is for the IDE 2.03 WHQL and 2.04 IDE driver, then there is the WHQL 1.14(116) AGP and the 1.16a(116a) AGP driver. and then i went to the Chipset Manufacturer Website for the Chipset on board and they have a Newer AGP driver which is 117(1.17) My Motherboard is ASUS P4S8X which is the SIS 648 chipset. Also should i resort to running a Release BIOS versus the Beta BIOS( i Know Differences just wonder if there is any boost in performance) Cant wait for the next BIOS release. Hell Cant Wait for the Next P4 MOBO(64BIT) SIS i think will always remain 3rd rate, and i think intel should reintroduce the Rambus standard with New Chipsets.Because One thing for Sure those Systems that do run RAMBUS im impressed by the speed and capability of them.

we've been trying to get the psu point across for some time now....I think alot of these guys just dont wanna spend more cash :-). By the way I have seen 3 more psu's go down recently due to the addition of higher end vid cards. They seem to work for a few days and then either just die out, or in one case pop a cap. My sons friends are learning that high end pc gaming is more of a daddy sport (expensive).
As far as Ive heard sis chipsets have always been great....especially those on asus boards. This might be far fetched but have you checked for ram compatibility with the chipset??? A few months ago I went on a ram shopping spree to see if I could get something that would do better timings at higher speeds then my xms3500. I bought some winbond with bh5 chips, ocz el ddr gold pc3700, and then some kingston hyperx. In the end I found out that the ocz is only really compatible with intel boards, and none of the others would work near advertised in my 8rga....so Im stuck with the corsair :-\
Low latency gaming monitor- sony trinitron fd.....dvi doesnt benifit gaming because the lcds are still slow....too bad I sold my crt when I got my lcd.

forgot to mention; a buddy of mine that I built a system for called the other night to let me know that his sytem was having problems in every game after he reformatted. Prior to the reformat he had no problems but had to reformat due to spyware remover self destructiong his winsock reg when it removed the spyware that comes bundled with kazaa :-) He isnt a very bright one to have done this since I had warned him about twice before....anyway, knowing that he doesnt know much about systems but that I had built his system with some hecka overkill parts I figured he hadnt updated anything. When I asked him how he reinstalled he simply said that he had let the windows disk do its thing and then proceeded to install his games.
Miraculously their were no conflicts within device manager or he would have figured it out....he simply use all the whql drivers from his xp non sp1 cd and left it at that. I had him run sp1 and fully update everything, then the ati 3.8 cat drivers, and then his mobo drivers updated from the manufacturers website. In the end all is well again.
I dont know for sure if its sp1 that cured his game probs but i'de say its pretty likely since he was exhibiting all the same symptoms as you.

Matt I did This Before Installing Windows and SP1
I went into the BIOS and I Set the Ram Freq to 166 Mhz Set The Chip Mode to Synchronous, Set V Core to 1.50, and Upped the FSB from 133/33 to 138/35 which then changed the Ram Freq from 166 to 172, AGP set at 8X Default, Turned Off Fast Writes, Cache Mode is UC, then installed Windows and SP1, Installed All Current Drivers for Motherboard, Sound Installs Automatically due to being SB PCI 512, Then Tried Installing Catalyst 3.8 but said it needed DX 9.0, so i installed 9.0b before Installing 3.8 driver, didnt restart between installing DX9.0b and the 3.8 drivers, after 3.8 installed i restarted, u know how the drivers find a configuration for Best Stability. Well After Restart I checked the Smart Gart and its set to AGP Mode 4X,(but Mobo is set at 8x) and the Fast writes are off, Displays tab, DDC is checked im going to leave it at that because my highest Refresh and Resolution are displayed, and those are correct due to monitor being 17 Inch LCD with and 1280x1024 Max resolution and 75 Hz max Refresh rate. To Get to this I Installed a Demanding Game(UT 2003) and left game at Stock Settings to test if system would crash, it didnt, so i tried this morning with stuff amped up and no crashes. It May just be this Mobo and vid Combination, Due to This is a First Gen 8x board, Smart Gart set the AGP Mode to 4x because it tested 8X and wasnt stable I assume. anohter Thing i like that ATI introduced is the VPU Recovery. Well Since game hasnt crashed im going to try other games and see if i experience any problems with drivers or what ever it is and then get the Tweak Utility u said to use with Stock Catalyst Drivers. In other words i think i may have finally gotten system stable with vid card. Oh By the way Have u tried the ASUS Radeon 9800 XT, the board looks sweet. One Thing is for sure im not going to become a Pioneer of Technology (usually get arrows in back) again until it has been tested and almost no one has bugs. Im wanting to build the Fastest AMD Athalon XP system up to date.(Waiting for AMD Athalon 64 FX prices to drop)

lol, roger that on the first gen 8x boards....I had several first gen 8x boards from soyo, msi, gigabyte, and asus. All of them worked great except the dang gigabyte ga-7vrxp which I had found through extensive research a claim that they had been recalled for pcb alterations directly relating to the agp....go figure. Funny thing is that I could only find one reference to this and it wasnt worth sending the board in for a 3 month turn around so I tossed an old geforce 3 in there and sold it cheap:-)
Ut2k3 kicks butt.....if you ever try some instagib DM look for docmodgod.com.....thats me...we'll tag team some folks...hehe:-)

Got Some Questions about overclocking, Matt do u have non stock coolers on ur Radeon 9700 Pro Im Using Omega Drivers but im wondering what is the safest overclock setting for this vid card or is it worth it, SMARTGART when installed with drivers tested itself and stated AGP mode 4x was stable even tho motherboard is set to 8X, i really dont know if it is truly running 8x or not

You haven't seen his homepage then, his coolers could not be any more non stock if he tried;) it's an impresive beast (big too) I don't think I would ever go that nuts when it comes to cooling.

_____________

AMD XP2600+, GA-7VAXP rev 1.1, 1024MB (333MHz) DDR, ATI 9700 Pro (with Zalman ZM80A-HP cooler and Thermaltake Smart fan II on thermal sensor), total of 150 GB hard drive space, Spire Falcon Rock CPU heatsink (replaced the fan with a Thermaltake Smart fan II self adjusting due to being on a thermal sensor again), Thermaltake Xaser III case (non see through panel) and a 17" Hercules Prophetview 920 Pro TFT screen.

See bio for system setup.

lol, thanks gary.....I did have non stock cooling on them....swiftech 80watt pelts. They allowed for one heck of an overclock once volt modded. I currently use a 9800pro 256 for my gaming rig and it now uses the swiftech pelt. The 9700's either use stock fans again or one of them has my stock 9800pro fan on it. I do take the recomended precations before installing any 9700pro though. Such as; pulling the shim off, insuring good contact between the hsf and the core, using arctic silver 3, using arctic silver compound to adhere copper heatsinks. I get the tin coated copper and then sand off the tin coating from the bottom. Then I highly reccomend adding at least one fan to the side window to cool the ram and bring fresh air on for the core.....I ussually use 2 though.
You can see my pics on my homepage where I used 2 thermaltake duct mods to direct flow from the window over the gpu horizontally so it badically assists the intakes and exhaust on the case. Less turbulance and keeps the airflow congruant.
I have seen many cases where normal case fans just dont cut it and a stock 9700pro gets artifacts. FYI, the 9800's and above have changed alot by improving contact with the core.....which is why you dont see many probs with them. They even added a heatsink to the v-reg chip which I highly recomend even of your not overclocking. If you compare 9700's and 9800's side by side then you can see where ATI basically admits all their mistakes without having to say so...hehe. Alot of guys are using led fans for their cases or stock fans that come with the case and they dont seem to provide the airflow that the 9700 needs.

>> Re: ATI Radeon 9700
oh yeah overclocking......their are several different revisions of pcb for the 9700pro and each one overclocks differently. Assuming that you are doing the volta mods, I woulndt exceed 1.8v on the core without at least a pelt. You can do it but only for a short period of time. One note about the volt mod too; be careful removing the aluminum plate over the vreg chip...the glue is hecka strong and unless you warm up the card first You may pull an i.c. off with it (did this myself...haha). To monitor voltage in real time as you adjust it you can get a display to solder on here http://www.datel.com
here is where i went using a swiftech mcw50-t
405 core,371 mem @1.88vcore
cpu was xp2800 t bred b at 2,832mhz (promified:-) )
3dmark2001seb330-20,099
I probably could have gone higher on the core however I wasnt in the mood for burnt wallet syndrom:-)

Eh im not going to that extreme im talking about adjusting the Core Clock and the Ram clock but i found out it isnt worth it. so im just going to leave it as the way it was. Im really thinking about building a AMD system with the XP 3200or the Athalon 64/64FX processor and a ASUS board with ASUS Radeon 9800 Pro XT. I dont think The Intel Processors will be in Price range once the 64BIT ones come out. But Come Again 64BIT is still in Baby Stages.

same here....but you might wanna do what Im doing which is...waiting till first quarter next year when they come out with the athlon 64 chips that dont require ecc ram. Then you be able to combine that massive 1600mhz bus with some massive mem speeds.
Dont forget that pci express is coming too....I think the xt is merely a dumped version of the 9900pro they had in the works. Word is that they dumped everything for more funding in the pci express arena :-)
Now you can get standard 9800pros for around $300 :-)
