Well, the one thing that I found throughout my problems is that there is going to be one thing that corrects your problem. And it won't be anything that has been suggested to you.

In my research in fixing my problem, it doesn't appear to be a driver issue. It appears to be a hardware compatability issue that is many layers deep and any one of those levels can produce the same error in the OS or games.

Sorry we havn't been able to help to this point.

Thought I had my problem solved. My P4X400 Ultra ran good all week. Then this morning, it started locking up every 5 minutes. Couldn't even coax it through 3DMark2001SE, which ran good all week. Well I fixed the problem, I took out the P4X400 and put my SIS 645DX board back in, and it runs flawless again. I am through with anything VIA. I really do like the 9700 Pro though, the visuals are much better than the other brand.

I have given up on 8x AGP for now also, will wait a while till things get hammered out. Normally I live on the bleeding edge, haven't had a system I could not get running stable, till now, I am humbled.

I do know that VIA boards do like Corsair memory, all mine did, when they wouldn't even run with Micron, mabe that is my problem now.

For now I will take 12046 3D marks and rock solid stability, over the 12500 I did get from the P4X400. Time to wait for awhile...

Having read through all the post above the one I have to agree with is the last one. The problem with the lock ups on my system at least disappeared when i uninstalled the latest via 4in1 driver. I am currently running 4.38 drivers and scoring 11170 in 3dmark2001se which i can live with at the moment because the computer does not lock up.

I did a fresh install of XP +SP1 then ran 3dmark 2001 scored around 10000 installed VIA 4in1 latest and 3d mark wouldn't even load the first test. uninstalled the driver and voila it works again.

My advice at the moment uninstall the latest 4in1 driver and use 4.38 unill VIA sort it out. 11170 is a good score and i am happy with it AT THE MOMENT so at least I can surf the web without a lock up. Let alone play games. cheers

Wo, I just had the weirdest thing happen. My computer had been on for most fo the day. i came in and read your posts and was writing a reply when bang, it went blank and rebooted. Didnt ask for an error report or anything. Just acted like nothing happened. Weird.

Anyways, i have installed all of the last 4 versions of 4in1 and I still get lockups. I'm really kinda hoping its the DDR type. Mine says legacy electronics on it. Nobody has heard of it. Could be the reason. The only thing is it didnt start til i put the radeon in. ??

Why the hell do all you people have problems with Radeon 9700 Pro? I've haven't had a problem with it. Well, at first, it would reboot my computer every now and then, but after I went to ATI's website and got the newest Catalyst drivers, it's been perfect. Only problem is this card gets reaaaally hot and I'm looking for a decent way to cool it (I don't want to go get a whole water cooling system or anything, don't wanna go overboard.)

Any ideas on how to kewl it? =D

I don't think this is the most appropriate place to come in and say
"Why the hell do all you people have problems with Radeon 9700 Pro? I've haven't had a problem with it."
Not the most contructive thing to say.

Adam. did you get my message. Have you actually narrowed it down to the video card?

It's a pity that the now largest thread on the site is a problem reporting one. :)

Sigh, well it looks like I spoke to soon :0(, it seems lowering the clock speed made it a little more stable but an hour or so (it was usally 20/30 mins) into any game the exact same happens :0(.

You guys really need to do more research.
Read this thread. Beginning to end. you'll understand the severity of our problem.
http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=25&thread...TARTPAGE=1

then do a search for "infinite loop video card" on the net. You'll be surprised by the number of forums and news articles and petitions to microsoft to fix this.

For those of you that are unsure this is your problem. The next time your computer locks up or reboots. (especially a lockup during 3d games) go to C:\windows\logfiles\watchdog and read one using notepad, when you see 'thread stuck in device driver', you have inifinite loop problems. go to microsofts knowledge base and look it up. You'll see their lame explanation.
I've seen at least 5 full petetions to mobo makers, video car makers, an Microsoft regarding this.

Damnit, anyone know why my computer reboots at random times because of this card? I'm running Windows 98 SE, it's usually very stable, I don't have any garbage on my comp, as soon as I installed Radeon 9700 Pro it reboots at random times, most usually in games. No error message, just reboots. This p**ses me off, I was just in a ladder game in Warcraft 3 playing a noob and I rebooted right as I was about to win.....ARGH!! How can I alleviate this problem?? =(

I got this link from transam :)
THANKS!!!!

http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=25&thread...TARTPAGE=1

I think my problem of random reboots and random images on the scree was do to a power problem. I went inside my computer and unplugged EVERYTHING that was not necessary. Pulled out all of my memery except for one stick.

Then I just started to plug things in one at a time until I found the culprit. Mine runs perfectly without my floppy drive plugged in. I think I had one too many things running off of the power coming to the ATI card. I had two hard drives and my floppy all on the same power cord.

I got this idea from the link above that trans posted :)

Best Regards
John

Well ive just striped the pc down to its bare bones with only the memory and graphics card running, and its completely stable.

So this is either a power issue or a conflict issue, im going to start adding things piece by peice now to see how it goes.
