Well, things are running a bit better now with a driver rollback. We'll see how long this lasts.

I'll fully admit that this is the first system I've build from the ground up. I have no problems admitting that and no problems taking advice/help/etc. And truth be told, I'm not irritated with ATI due to the card. I'm frustrated that the card won't work, yes, but I'm p**sed with what ATI calls customer service. Having worked in retail for a few years (and having worked with PCs for slightly less), I've got to say this is the first manufacturer that simply does not try to help you solve a problem. I mean, I've already dropped $250 on the card, you'd think that there'd be at least a person there I could call for assistance. The fact that all I got back in response to my e-mail was a bunch of weblinks to ATI FAQs (of which I had all previously read) only p**sed me off further. An aggravating machine error is one thing. Crap customer service is another thing entirely. That's why I'm not buying ATI again (unless maybe it's a 3rd party card, but we'll see).

I do plan on getting in touch with ASUS (my mobo mfr) in a few days to see if they can help me solve the issue. More fans may be an option, but I'll try the heat test first (sticking a house fan to the unit) before I buy a bunch of fans and have a noisy racket on my desk. I will try changing AGP aperture again and see what that does. I remember the RAM speed being compatible, pretty sure this mfr is (it's 2 Crucial 256MB ddr400 sticks). I'll check with ASUS on that as now I have a new area to explore.

Anyway, thanks for the extra info Matt. Like I said, I know enough to put this thing together and solve simple troubles, but not anything major (I focus on programming and tend to bug friends with hardware questions). Thanks for your input.

>> Re: ATI Radeon 9700
I've had a very similar problem with my ATI 9700 PRO. I just got this computer on wendsay and immediately noticed that there were some serious problems with the video card.

Firstly, when i try to play a game (Like Jedi Knight 2) i would get one of two things; either it would freeze totally, or it would crash and spit out the error "G_SPAWN: No free entities". Pretty much everyone i talked to said basically the same thing. "Update your drivers". So, after downloading over 8 different driver and catalyst versions (on dial up, no less) i finally decided to start from scratch again. I formatted the drive and reinstalled XP Pro. I've managed to get it to stop freezing, and instead of giving me the G_spawn error, i've gotten it to give me this when it tries: http://misery.geekside.com/~admin23/screenshot1.jpg

On top of the gaming problems, DVD/Movie playback of any kind is stunted by the most annoying red dots i've ever seen. All over the playback area these red dots torment the fibers of my soul. Okay, a bit dramatic but they are annoying. I've tried switching it to 4x AGP, even underclocked it, installed a second fan to keep it from overheating and checked voltage settings. All check out. I have yet to discover a solution to this problem.

Here's my system:

Shuttle XPC WLAN
512mb DDR Ram
200gb HDD
WinXP PRO SP1
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO
Realtek AC'97 Audio
P4 3.06ghz

My god, your cheating on Jedi Knight Outcast (999 health:S)!?

Anyway what revision of the 9700 is it?

Didn't even know they were still available since the 9800 and 9600 were released....well I can't get hold of any over here.

See bio for system setup.

Okay, i'm not sure of the revision, and i can't really check right now (I'm packing up for a road trip, heh).

Anyway, yeah, 9700's are still available. You can get them online and alot of retailers still stock them. But, nothing i've done in the BIOS or with catalyst helps. I'm not gonna touch the voltage or anything, i seriously doupt that would affect anything like this. From what i've found online, updating the card's bios seems to fix 99% of the problems. But...i'm not too confident in my ability to do that without screwing up and destroying the card, so i'll use that as a last resort.

I have also contacted ATI, by email, phone and even IRC (#ati on efnet.), but they really don't want to admit there's anything wrong. "Update your drivers" <-- gets more annoying everytime i hear it.

Have you tried some replacement thermal compound on the graphics chip?

It was one of the flaws with the 9700's that they didn't admit to, take the thermal tape off the heatsink and then replce it with some artic silver or something half decent anyway.

See bio for system setup.

hmm im gonna have to try that and maybe get a better heatsink, the stock one that is on the 9700 isnt robust as the one on the 9800 Pro.

If your not using the DVI out adapter for your display connection then the standard VGA port is the secondary as the DVI is the primary port, I think that's written or shown either in the settings for the card or within the instruction book.

See bio for system setup.

Well, here's an update:

I was lucky enough to find a 2nd 9700 Pro at another Circuit City. I bought the new one, stuck it in, same problems (worse actually, blue lines across screen and all). I returned it and got a PNY GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. Again, game would crash after playing for too long. Since I experienced issues with NVidia and ATI, I'm thinking it's a mobo problem and I'll probably have ASUS RMA it. I'm still less than pleased with ATI's cust ervice, but the card seems to be okay.
