right this is for a friend whos having major problems. he booted his pc and got the blue screen of death and stop error 0x00000051 with some other stuff in tow. it says its a registry error (which i fear) and he has tried repairing wdws, reinstalling wdws, using the recovery disk and nothing it just keeps coming up with the blue screen of death. ive been reading up on this and problems with the motherboard keeps coming up. does anyone think this is the case? also if he tried to reformat the hard drive do you think that would help!

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

thanks

Have you tried booting in safe mode? if not try that and do a system restore.

David.

Sounds like it could be a hard drive problem. What happens if you change the boot order to boot from floppy and try to run a boot disk?

Also, at what point during the boot process does the error occur?

Does he or you have and difernt HD to try in the system?

sorry in answer toyour first question, i know that he has tried using a wdws 98 boot disk. i read somehwere that this sometimes can give you the reformatting option but he still no matter what gets the blue screen. and it comes up when it says windows is now loading then it stops and says the usual wdws is closing down so no harm can be done to your computer and comes up with the registry error. so i dont know what it is. i know that he recently downloaded spyware doctor and that sometimes removes registry files but i told him to look out for those and not to delete them so i dont think hes deleted them.

Assuming you have an external HD which you're going to swap out, just unplug the IDE cable from the suspect drive and plug it into your USB to IDE converter. You don't need to actually install it into the case, but try not to spill your coffee on it. I'm also assuming his system only has one HD, in which case you don't need to worry about master/slave issues.

Another assumption-that the external HD is blank? Once it's all set, just power up (not forgetting to provide power to your external drive) and see if you can load windows onto the new drive if it's already been formatted. If it's not blank and you can afford to lose the data, format it and install windows. If the installation goes without a hitch and the system boots ok thereafter, you've found your culprit. If not, see you back here tomorrow :)

right, im well peed off with this now. i have tried everything before anyone asks, repairs, old boot disks everything and i cant get anything out of it.

i got an old pc of mine and hooked it up to the broken pc. i hooked up the hard drive and it boots so no mother board problems of any kind. so i think to myslef its definately the hard drive so i go and buy a new hard drive and cable!!!!!!!! cant bloody install it. ive tried changing all the jumper settings, tried different cables and nothing. i take the data cable out boot up with just power and the thing works. so why cant i get this thing to work when its hooked up to the motherboard. the old hard drive boots and i can access the bios with it but as you have probably already gathered it has a registry error and wont let us into windows at all.

am i doing something wrong here? i assumed that i could just plug the new hard drive in and it would boot up and all i would have to do is format it then run windows xp on it but i cant even get that far.

we would like to have the two hard drives going on it, because weve been told we could possibly access the corrupt hard drive through the new one and repair it that way. but as you can see we are having no luck what so ever. can someone please help im getting desperate now!

WHY WHY WHY are you pulling your hair out......ok so you have to do a low level format and scan of your harddrive....get over it and just do it, this will tell you if you need a new hard drive or not. If all looks good just reinstall the OS and go from there. If you lost some important files then chalk it up to experience and back up all of your imporant files and pictures to a CD, Floppy, or Tape(store in a cool dark dry place)next time. Hey its not the end of the world, formating is good for the hard drive its like batheing, just makes you look feel and act better.
