something new discovered ! I disabled the usb ports in the bios and settled for having to use a ps/2 funky little trackball. The something new is that the mouse just stops working all of a sudden, nothing but the desktop running (Win98se). Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

If the computer tried to load the USB on its own, it sounds like you didn't load everything off the mobo install CD. When you run the CD it loads 3 different driver sequences. It loads one and tells you to remove the CD and reboot. DON"T remove the CD. Just reboot. When it is done rebooting, it automatically starts the load of the second program. After that, same deal don't remove. The third program it loads is the USB 2.0 drivers.

originally I did the install from the mobo cd, how could the sys locking up wipe all that info out and start installing all six usb ports upon reboot.

The never ending saga of the ECS board. The $200 combo wound up costing $350 after a crashed HD, RAM chip and a needed or not P/S upgrade.
But the box works super now at full throttle.

The (dont remove the cd doesnt work Payton). If I let it install everything from the mobo cd and it reboots, windows starts finding PCI universal serial bus and wants to install ( will only install if i insert the win98se CD) regardless of which route I take the usb install fails and dumps me back to the desktop. Guess I will try returning this POS one more time. Thanks for the help though. By the way in device mngr it shows
Universial Serial Bus Controller
USB 2.0 Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
still dont understand why it would suddenly want to install all six USB ports, as I only have the one usb item I am using.

Jesus Dwight this piece of crap has everything different for everything.
Mine says VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller. It's getting to the point where you can't help somebody with the same board because everything is different. Oh well...onward and sideways. I don't know what to tell you anymore. sorry Bro!

Thats probably why yours is installing a different set of drivers, ie: newer o/s. I lost my install of 2k pro when a hard drive died last week and just havent gotten around to sending the drive back for replacement. I currently am running win98se, and I am thinking that it doesnt support the new usb 2.0 interface.

Does any one know of any diagnostic software to test usb ports to see if they are functioning properly, mine will work for a while and then just die when i am right in the middle of a drawing file (autocad 2000 or microstation 95) also will suddenly die when navigating in windows explorer.
Thanks guys

This is a new 4in1 driver version came out on the 20th. It will load the PCI IRQ Drivers. THEY ONLY LOAD WHEN YOU ARE RUNNING WIN 98. I guess that version needs different drivers. That may be the problem if you switched back to 98 you may need diff. drivers. It system detects so don't worry about installing over the other drivers.

So here's MY problem with the P4VXASD2+...

Decided to upgrade from 256 megs of DDR 2400 to a gig (2 sticks of 512) of DDR 2700 today. And of course the first time I turn it on, nothing works. I have all the jumper settings correct and I get nothing but tweaked graphics settings before the thing goes black and locks up on me. So I start experimenting. I put in one stick and it worked fine. I put in the other stick, and it still worked fine. Heck, I even updated the BIOS. But whenever I put in both sticks, it locks up every time.

So then a read a few billion posts in this thread and find out that ECS lied in their documentation and this board DOESN'T support PC2700. GRRRRRR. No worries. I went and exchanged the 2700 for a couple sticks of 2100 (there was ZERO line at the Fry's return counter!!!), stuck that in, crossed my fingers...

And it STILL won't take two sticks! Everything looks fine until the moment I'm supposed to get the Windows Networking login, then everything goes bad like I list above.

Oh yeah, almost forgot some stats. I'm running a P4 2.0 gig, SB Live sound, onboard NIC, blah blah blah. On paper, this SHOULD work quite nicely.

Any ideas, besides trashing this sucker and getting a real board?

What was that Alice Cooper song? "Welcome To My Nightmare?" Was this brand name RAM or Fried's OEM. Sometimes the sticks are different even when they have the same SKU numbers. And if so they won't be compatable. Some people have had problems using the high price RAM (Crucial), and have had to downgrade. You should have kept the 2700. It will only run at 2100, but you will still have the better speed for the next mobo. <g> At this point I would say be happy you can get it going with one 512 stick. Sorry I can't be a little more helpful.

I forgot one thing. Try to go into the Bios and disable "Quick Boot". Let it count all the memory and see if it loads. If it does, then you can go back in and enable it afterwards and it will probably be OK.

Lance:
The only way I could get my board to see both sticks of Crucial 512 - 133 sdram sticks was to set the fsb to 400. I also have 2 sticks of matched ddr2700 512 Crucial mem. , and this pos board will only see one da*? stick at a time running at 533 fsb. Just keep returning the board until you get a good one.

Well, I tried setting the board for 133, but I get the annoying NDIS error (I know there's a fix for this, but it's for processors faster than mine), so I have to leave it at 100. Ah well. I guess I'll just get a real board in a couple months. Thanks for all your help, everyone.
