a guy on craigslist here has an "eVGA MX4000 64MB A8-NV93-LX" for $25 obo, or i can get a sapphire 9250 for $41 + tax from newegg.

i know neither one is that great, but i'm looking at this as a temporary relief from my 32M SiS until i can afford a real card.

I'd just buy the mx4000 if you are getting another better card soon, but if you need a card for like 6 months, i'd get the 9250.

Go for the 9250,it has vertex and pixel shaders where the mx4000 has none plus it has twice the bandwidth as the mx.

Yeah go for the Radeon 9250, no offence but the entire MX line from NVidia is pretty much crap.

compulsive shopper that i am, i checked back and somebody else is selling a bfg 5900 ultra 256 for $100. he said if no one puts money in his hand today, he will hold it for me til saturday morning. i have a paper that i HAVE to finish tonight. i had to work on it last night too or else i would have the card already.

thanks for all the advice. as far as the 9100, well, it's still a low-end card, right? for $50, plus tax and shipping, it's inching up towards $60. the less i spend now, the more i can spend later, when my necessities are taken care of and i don't have to worry about vehicles breaking down and such. unless of course i get this bfg.

i should have looked more closely. still, how much better is it? at this point, i would rather save the $10. benchmarks means nothing to me, i just want it to play games smoothly. is it going to make that much of a visible difference?

the suspense with the bfg is killing me. i couldn't go pick it up immediately because i had to finish my paper, so some other guy has first dibs.

Matt... I agree with Supreet and the rest of the guys... For your scenario, the 9200 or 9250 is the way to go. I used a higher-end version of that card you listed as the video card in a PC build for 3 teenage brothers who are "console gamers" (have XBox, PS2, want to try PC games... more into the convienience, less into the performance) and the family is quite pleased...

Also, the card you listed? It's dropped in price to $37.75 + $2.99 S&H @ Newegg as of 3/25/05. :)
Bonus!

The card I used for that build:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-1...amp;depa=1
$81.00 + $1.99 S&H as of 3/25/05

ed.2>
Supreet, that card you listed is a freak. It's a 9100, but it's got a GPU clocking that is 10mhz _greater_ than its 9200 sibling? What's up with that? :)

ed.3>
Holy crap, what a deal... If you don't mind paying a few bucks more, you can double the bit-rate on the card from 64-bit to 128-bit.
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-1...amp;depa=1
$44.00 + $3.00 S&H as of 3/25/05

thanks for all the time everybody put into answering my ignorant little question. :) however, i found a deal on a computer today that i am going to give to my sister, after i get the stuff she won't need out of it. one of those items would be an old 9000 64M card, which certainly works well enough until i can afford a new card. i am having a problem now, though, which i will start another thread for. my soundblaster live is no longer working or recognized. i have to sleep and then try basic stuff, then i will post if still having problems.
