I had the same problem, but none of the fixes worked. I then upgraded to WMP11 and still the same problem. Then I fixed it:
Put in CD,
open WMP,
click on "Now Playing" on menu bar:)
then go down drop down menu and select Play ' Name of Album (D:)',
go to left side of WMP and on bottom of list is "Name of Album Playing",
Right click this and select properties, Select "Digital", then OK, play CD - enjoy Sound.:)

Old out of date AC97 drivers may be left over on your system.
Uninstall, reboot, cancel install then search for left over files.
They start with "alc" like this one "alcxinit.dat".
Make sure you include system folders in your search.
Delete these left over files then install your AC97 drivers.

WMP always sucked for me. I tried it for a while and then just decided to use MPC instead.
