if you live near a fry's, this would be a good start. you could probably upgrade the ram and add a burner and stay within your budget easily. not sure how Linspire is, though. also, cheap is cheap, so it probably wouldn't be very good for the long run.

Your gonna want to run Win XP, maybe you can use a key you have from another computer.

But for 300 dollars its probally gonna be maybe:
a celeron or sempron
cheap mobo
256 or 512mb of cheap ram
cheapest video card you can find or onboard
onboard sound

you could also try your local craigslist.com and see what is on there. i've gotten some good deals, if you don't mind buying used.

You're in luck. I actually made a comp for my wife for about 300 dollars. Here's what I used:

$54.00 MSI K7N2GM-V Socket A (Socket 462) NVIDIA nForce2 IGP Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
$49.00 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 6E030L0 30GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA133 Hard Drive - OEM
$75.99 AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton 333MHz FSB Socket A Processor Model AXDA2600DKV4D - OEM
$41.00 CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model VS512MB400 - Retail
$38.00 ASPIRE ATXB2KL-AL/350 Silver Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ATX 350W power supply for AMD/Intel Power Supply - Retail

The total from that was 257.99 not including tax and shipping. The mobo has an NVidia onboard video card which is nice and can run most games if necessary. The case is the best you'll see for that price as well. the only thing I didn't include was a CDRW since I had a spare one laying around. You could probably find one for under 20 though.

AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+
ABit AN8 Ultra nForce4 Ultra Chipset
MSI 9800GT OC 512MB
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB (2 x 1 GB) DDR 400
Antec 500W PSU

As long as you already got a copy of windows i think you can build a good system for 300$:

Sempron 2600+ 754 $62.81 :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104226

ECS 754 mobo $44 (AGP, onboard LAN+audio):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813135151

2 of these Corsiar 256MB chips, $26 each:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145478

The cheapest case on Newegg $26 shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811164040

XFX MX4000 AGP video card $27:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150055

Rosewill 300watt PSU w/good user reviews $20 shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182001

Maxtor 40GB 7200RPM IDE HD $50 shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822140133

Sony 52X CD-BURNER $24 shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106828

Total: $305.81

I hope she has an extra $5.81 to spend. If she does you can build a fast system with 512MB of DDR 400 ram, a sempron 2600+, a dedicated video card, name-brand CD Burner, 40GB name brand HD, and a mobo with good users reviews plus AGP, built in LAN and Audio. And it will run Windows XP really good.
