I was thinking I should get a different one anyway. The trouble is I have an Arctic Cooling NV5 gpu cooler in there and there is hardly any room above the fan on the chipset. The good looking replacement that I saw doesn't conform to those dimensions. Does anyone have a chipset fan solution for A8N-SLI mobo set up like mine?

the chipset fan is ment to be realy dodgy on asus sli bord. I have herd that if you send them a email saying it has failed they will send out a new one without asking another question. if not you may want to try one of the vantec chipset/gpu coolers

Ya see if theyll send you a new one. Maybe they make them better now. If not you can always try an aftermarket one.

My chipset fan was dying. It had gone from about 5000RPM to like 1500. I only realized it because of the alarm from mobo monitor5. I took it off, took it apart with a jewelers screw driver, sprayed the crap out of it with WD-40 and slapped it back together and remounted it with some fresh arctic alumina. That was about 4 months ago. As I am writing this my chipset fan is running at 6025RPMs whisper quiet. God I love WD-40!

just got off the phone with Asus. And they're sending me a new fan. They also said it's a newer version. Hopefully it's improved. Yeah my alarm is going of too, I thought it was coming from my fan controller, but it didn't make sense why, I didn't know there is a built in alarm.

I just got my new fan. The new fan comes pre-stuck with a thin thermal insulation pad. The fan is attached to the mobo with two spring loaded pins so it stays on well but is not super stable during the installation process. I want to put AS 5 on it. Can I just take off that pad they have clean it up nice and use the AS 5 for this application?

Don't see why not-just make sure the fan is sitting snugly on the chipset without the pad acting as a shim.

The annoying whine started on mine a couple of weeks ago. There seems to be no end of bother with this chipset fan.

As a temporary fix I've taken the fan off given it a good blast of air and wd40. Let it dry well and then screwed it back in. Didn't touch the heatsink. I've left the cover plate off and its been fine for well over a week now at a steady 8400 (!) rpm

I'm going to put something else on though as not a long term fix. Think I'll probably go for the Zalman NB47J as I've got a nice airy case.

Cant be bothered to get a replacement from Asus as I'll have to do it via Mesh who I bought the system from and they are hopeless with anything aftersales (hindsight is a wonderful thing!).

Poor show from Asus who I normally find excellent quality.

You don't really have to worry about drying the WD-40. It's non conductive. I thought when I did mine it was gonna be a temporary fix too, but it's still running after some months. And still faster than before.

MInes started being a bitch as well, I thought it was my 120MM.. the noise is louder than my server...

There isnt much room too play with, luck im running 6600gt's or I wouldnt have a chance in ftting anything else. I will have to dig out some of the water cooling kit i got lying about..

I did say meches after care was rubbish... I guess no one listens then?

FFS, I just touched mine and the retaining clip just broke off, dam thing, quick mod later.. drill two big ass screws to get it to hold on temporary till I can get to fixing it correctly, now I know I cant have SLI.

The best solution is to replace the chipset fan with a passive northbridge cooler. No sound, no extra power draw although putting one in is a bit tedious (and tight if you're ruuning 2 video cards), but well worth it. You can find several here: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Passive+Northbridge&hl...p;ct=title

Yeah you gotta be careful about that though. I bought a Zalman heatsink to put on mine but didnt rialise quite how little room my arctic silencer left as it covers half of it and is pretty close

I did consider just sawing some of the pins off so that it fitted, but thought that might not be a good idea lol, that said....... do you think it might work?

You ought to consider the MCX159-CU series Chipset Heatsinks from Swiftech. http://swiftech.com/. Super quiet and fits with SLI video cards.

I just installed a ThermalTake Crystal Orbe A1178. It is noisy as heck. It's by far the noisiest fan on my machine. The Swiftech is rated at 18 dBa. I just ordered one from NewEgg. It wasn't cheap. But, who cares if it solves my problem.

Hi, I had the same problem as everyone else, and I followed the advice of the above poster, only I used a small amount of WD-40 on the fan, and it's running smoothly once again.

um, the small one on the motherboard. I thought it was called the motherboard fan but then someone told be it was a cpu fan, but some sites call it a chipset fan. anyways, it's the smallest one, not a case fan or a power source fan, those i know. I've been trying to replace this one but i can't seem to find them anywhere. what is a Northbridge fan anyways?
