That should not be any problem as long as the "old" mainboard supports AGP x4. I have put AGP x8 cards in AGP x4/x2 boards without any trouble. Make sure you have newer video drivers for the card, for the FX series the 53.xx-66.xx drivers were pretty good.

www 100c.

What make/model is your friends PC? Is it oem?

If it is, i'd doubt there's an AGP slot. Most OEM pc's that used tnt riva's, were onboard variants, so no slot to plug another card in.

If there is a slot, the fx5200 should work no problem. I'd recommend older drivers however, maybe 50xx series

as far as i know all AGP 3.0(4x-8x) Compliant Vid cards are compatable with AGP 3.0(4x-8x) and AGP 2.0(2x-4x) Slots- Course that 5200 will run at 4x in a AGP 2.0 compliant motherboard

You probably could depending on you motherboard. I wouldn't bother though. The 5200 is not good enough to do any serious gaming.

Peace

Ya it might not be worth upgrading the graphics card considering the other parts of the system. Unless his mobo can overclock. Then maybe it might be worth it. Because if that 1.7Ghz P4 is a northwood it will hit 2.4Ghz easily.

I've got my FX5200 in a 4X AGP slot, no problem.

the vid card will run as fast as AGP 8X but wull run at the fasted speed the card is plugged into. so if its plugged into a AGP 4X slot then it will only run at 4X and not at 8X. I would recommend at least an fx5700 as its not an expensive card but will have better performance.
