  HDD Recovery help asap
 Date Written
Henry Martin Sep 15, 2005, 07:32pm EDT Report Abuse
My brother just called me and said that he had a computer problem. He has a Compaq with Windows XP and the system recovery thing. Apparently he had been getting a ton of crashes, so he did the system recovery, which is supposed to save all of your data. However, the thing crashed on him while doing system recovery, and he went ahead and started over, finally installing a clean copy of Windows. However, all of his data is missing, which shouldn't happen after a recovery.

I need some help here. I know that once your HDD crashes you shouldn't write anything to it, and data recovery isn't so bad. However, he went ahead and installed Windows right then and there. Any ideas on how to recover the lost files?

Go to, search "file recovery", pick a program, download, install and search for whatever is recoverable. Probably most files will be if the new Windows installation has simply overwritten the old one.

IF... He didnt format when he did the install then he should be able to just look at the C drive and get the imfo back there.

IF he has formatted, and re installed the chances of data recovery isnt looking to good.

Before he touches the computer, Install a rubbish old HDD and install a OS on that and the data recovery.
every time the PC is turned on and off or anything is installed the more data will be lost.

I agree with Rory, he needs to get that HDD off line and insatll OS on another drive. Then he can plug the bad drive in and try and recover his lost files.

if he knows the file names WinHex is a handy recovery tool

Ya Rory. The one above you and the one below you. They both usually show up in any thread that suggests it may be related to data recovery. Other than that they don't seem to participate in any other threads. They just pop in to drop llinks to their for profit products. Using other peoples bandwidth to advertise.
