Bummer ! ... its priced more than the 7800GX but it doesnt perform as well !! . There could be more to this ... I dont see how ATI would price their card so high when its inferior to the 7800GTX. Perhaps some driver tweaks are expected.

But as it stands,

Thanks to Sander for taking the trouble to review the card.
And props to Nvidia for having succesfully conquored the 3D market.... for now atleast.

Can we have a picture of the card though?... wanna see what kind of heatsink they've employed and how big the card is.

Sorry guys, can't help you with pics or driver revs and all that, the testing was done in the lab of one of ATI's board partners in Taiwan, and they're not about to disclose who they are, as ATI will certainly want a 'word' with them. Nevertheless my hat's off to them and a big thanks is in order, as they were willing to help me when we came to them for a scoop a few weeks ago, and a scoop it sure was.

No thats fine, you've taken a lot of trouble as it is. Thanx m8.

You do realise you'll have ATI's undies in a bunch over this review !.... some holywood style journalism here ! hehe.

This is heart breaking to see though... a new core that took so long to release is worse than a retrofitted core.

Sander this is not my opinion.... but can u explain why the ATI guys claim that the numbers arent even close?.
Maybe there was a mistake?.
If however ur numbers are correct, ATI will lose all respect from my side. Releasing a sub-std product is one thing, but attempting to tarnish another persons image, and/or still trying to hype a failed product is just plain wrong.

Varun,

I can't be 100% sure these numbers are accurate, I contacted a befriended AIB a few weeks ago and asked for some help. The results I got are after submitting our timedemo scripts for the benchmarks listed. They indicated the benchmarks were run on a X1800 XT and X1800 Pro, I however cannot verify them. As can be seen from the numbers a OC-ed X850XT will never reach that level of performance. We'll have to wait and see when the actual boards show up, for now treat these as preliminary, just another piece of the puzzle. I did write 'these numbers are provided AS-IS' for a reason in the introduction, they can only be verified when the actual boards show up. Sofar ATI has not gotten in touch with me yet, which usually means I'm pretty much spot on.

Sander, don't disppoint me please, I always had huge respect for you, and had swallowed anything you've said. I am still shocked to see those benchmarks, I was expecting R20 to beat 7800GTX comprehensively before as per listed in my first post...I am a Huge fan of ATI, and you can read in my specs below, don't disppoint me with that review please.

I'll support ATI 101% forever.

What about the heat this thing must be putting out? How about how loud the onboard fan must be and the power it must consume? One of the more remarkarkable things NVIDIA achieved with the 7800 series was to deliver a new generation of video card with a significant increase in performance that actually runs cooler, takes up less space and consumes less power than the previous generation. ATI's new card has got to be one very hot unit with a huge HSF onboard and a couple of power plugs waiting to be filled. The 7800 managed to reverse that trend.

Sander these guys seem to have the same opinion as you,

http://www.hkepc.com/hwdb/r520firstlook-e.htm

"As the card maker doesn't wish to reveal the R520 performance yet, but we can confirm that R520 at 24pp or 32pp will not be lower than that of the GeForce 7800GTX. Even though the 32pp and 24pp R520 mass production will face some difficulties, but the 16 pipelines R520 using the 90nm core will be clocked high to maintain a certain level of competitiveness"

So yeah... u might be spot on here.

Those benchmarks mean nothing. They are not even a taste of what to expect with ATI's new R520 cores.

ATI knows what they are doing, and those beta drivers are not ready to take full advantage of ATI's new cards. Just wait for the final release of the X1800 XT & Pro with final cat drivers.

Don't get upset with Sander Sassen though, he is just posting results.
