You may want to attempt to modify the clients lmhosts files to include the Exchange servers Netbios Name as mapped to the external address. You may also have to modify the hosts files to include the same as fqdn, again with the external exchange address.
These files are located in %WINDIR%\system32\drivers\etc

Gerrit, hadn't thought of mapping the netbios name in the hosts file - thanks for the idea. I'm gonna give it a try.

The exchange server also acts as file server and domain controller for authentication and printing.

If I add the entry into the hosts file pointing to the external address, will this not disrubt everything else, such as file and print access and even domain authentication?
