I have SBC dsl and a generic comp usa router. everything has been going fine for the years that i've had this combo, but suddenly one day the internet started lagging really bad. webpages would not load up and such.

the problem i found is that if more than one computer is on and plugged into the router everyones internet on the router will lag. so i musc disconnect the other computers if i wanna go online. this is causing me major problems, plz help asap cause i have to do my hw and so does my bro!

When you connect other computers to your system, your Internet connection is shared between those computers, depending on exactly what you are doing. So a 1Mbps connection will only afford 512kbps for two computers, 256kbps for four computers etc. That is the theory. This would be more noticeable when downloading large files, but would make little difference for emails, messageing etc.

Do unto others exactly what you expect them to do to you.

Jerome,

It may be the case that the router you have is degrading and might be going bad. If there is a reset button on the router, hold it down for over 10sec to reset the router to factory default and then reconfigure it back to a working configuration. There may be a possiblility that there was a parameter got changed or that it may be a router going bad. I say this is that you say it was working for a long time and then all of the sudden it not doing so well. Maybe try borrowing a router to see if the problem goes away.

hmm well none of us are downloading or anything so i dont see a reason for it going slow. i tried going into the router configurations and putting everything to default, still no luck. G.G i think i thinkg the router may be going bad :(. oh well, ill just buy another generic one from comp usa for 10 bucks

It could also be your firewalls or adaware/viruses.

I was just about to say the same thing as Blue... one or more of the computers you are yoking up probably have adware / spyware / malware / implants / lifters / pushers / etc. on them that are clogging the connection.

Other than that, the router's firmware or actual circuitry might be "decaying". The former can be re-flashed, whereas the latter requires replacement. Thing is, though, with it being so cheap, it's probably not worth it to re-flash the firmware, even if such a revision exists for this model.

If you do make a new router purchase, I'd recommend looking at a D-Link. I'm not saying it's the "best", but it certainly is "better than" what you currently have. Often, D-Links have a rebate (I've gotten actual checks back from them, so they do honor them) that brings the total cost of the device down to, like, $20 - $30. Not bad for a "budget" piece of hardware.

hmm well i think the malware/adware stuff is ruled out. my bro just reformatted his computer which is directly connected to the dsl modem. so we decided to dry it with just my computer and his.. still lagged.

then my computer and just my sisters.. still lagged. we tried many combos and no luck :(

Try bypassing the router too. Just hook one straight into the modem. See if that speeds things up.
