Hi,

I'm new to these forums and my knowledge of computers isn't substantial.

I've been trying all day to find a solution to this problem that has suddenly plagued my laptop.
(it's so bad i am having to use a pc to reach this forum)

I have noticed a dramatic slowdown in the every day running of my laptop.
Specs are: 256MB Ram, Time, Windows XP, 40gb HD, 2600+ athlon processor.

Suddenly it took literally 10 minutes to start up and even opening a program or internet page would start and stop over a long period of time.

Then when it slowed down completely, the infamous blue error screen appeared.

At first it described the error as "Kernels"

After this it came up with s3gnb.dll (which is a component of my graphics card - prosavage DDR)
Since then it's also come up with atapi.sys as the problem.

This happens everytime i start up the computer.

I've also noticed when starting up, for a brief second it says "invalid boot.ini file". If this has anything to do with it?

I have literally not installed any new software or hardware that would have caused this problem to suddenly manifest. Nor have i tampered with the computer in any unconventional way.

Please help, i will try to provide any extra details if needed. As you can appreciate though, right now i am being compounded with different blue error screens all saying something different.

I honestly do not know why this would suddenly occur, i obviously fear loosing the functionaility of my laptop long term.

Please help, and apologies if i have posted in the wrong forum or gone against etiquette i am unaware of.

I am using adaware, zonealarm, windows spyware anti spyware, spybot. None show up with anything out of the ordinary.

And Yeah, i am able to get into windows ok, but it is just extremely slow and eventually crashes with the blue screen.

The problem is that you need some grease for your computer. Spyware is certainly not to blame - I speak from experience. In fact, WD40 usually does the job quite well here. I would suggest that you open up your computer's case lid, remove all of the components, make sure you move around a lot and rub the carpet, because I've heard that touching the components having done this actually makes them last much longer. Then apply WD40 all over the sections of the components that fit somewhere, for example the flange on the graphics card (which goes into the AGP/PCIE slot) and use this technique on all sockets and slots, good basic lubrication. This includes power supply connections as well of course!! Then re-boot the computer and it will certinaly give you no trouble again. I hope that helped! Yours Sincerely, Peter.

what kind of laptop and what operating system. Since the kernel and boot.ini files are system files, it sounds like something is corrupted. Go to start/run, and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK This will start the system file checker. It will scan and replace any damaged corrupted or missing system files with the stashed files in the Windows folder. After you run this app, you will need to reinstall your service packs and any updates you have. The other thing would be a repair install which would completely reinstall windows on top of the existing program without data loss. Bt if it is a laptop, then you probably don't have that option with the proprietary "recovery" CD.

Edit: DON'T USE WD40! Some idiot named Richard tried that once and the resultant electrical discharge fried his brain, leaving him incoherent and in a constant state of stupification.

Whats that, LOL, did you not hear that WD40 has 2000 uses? You can use it for most anything! I'd be surprised if it wouldn't work here. I mean, you said the computer was very slow..a bit of grease might "get things moving" again, no?

LMAO @ Bossa. I may be old but I'm not quite ready for senility yet. I got Richards joke. Though to be honest with you, if my computer got soaked in the New Orleans flooding and the case was full of mud, WD40, being non conductive, would be good for cleaning out the slots and contacts.

I certainly ain't senile and not one of WD40's 2000 uses is get to "that department" working properly thanks. Just so happens that everything is well greased there so no troubles. I often use grease in my computer and it works really well. Of course I'm talking about my clockwork computer that I own. It doesn't use electricity.

Also, I am far from stupid, I took this test: http://www.nerdtests.com/ft_stupid.php and scored 17% stupid which is rated as "pretty smart". You nerds couldn't unless you cheated.
