"Yeah Josh, you gotta love SBC!, thats what you have right? SBC! has the best DSL deals in the US that i know of, i wish i could get it where i live."
Yeah, SBC is great. The only downside is their stinkin' browser. I don't use it, but the rest of my family does, and there is so many problems with it.

Tell them not to use the browser, just use Firefox, or hell even IE.

These download rate threads are stupid and p**s me off. Not to mention make me insanely jealous. With my pitiful 1.25MB and local and long distance phone plus my hosting bill I gotta pay $50 a month. Since I live in an almost exclusively black neighborhood (I'm the exception), and America being what it is, this neighbor-hood is the last in line for getting anything. upgraded or installed. We didn't have cable TV access until more than 5 years after Beverly Hills got it. I gues they figure black people don't watch TV or use computers. Stupid! And the cable is Comcast, and they aren't even willing to give me a firm guarantee on the speed I will get.

No company will give you a gurantee on what you'll get. What our contract says is that 3mbps is the max, but it will not always be at that speed.

Josh,

all companies give you a garranteed speed but they advertise the max speed for competitve reasons.
for example.....a 3Mbit connection is usually garranteed at least 1.5Mbits

FYI there is nothing wrong with borrowing a neighbors bandwidth as they have full control over wether or not you can access there network from security to black listing your MAC address on their router.

Good old NZ and it;s habit of staying 5 years behind in internet speeds.
I am on 256k, download 30kbps and it costs me $40 NZ which is around 28 dollars U.S...it sucks.

I know that most of you already know this, but for those who dont;

Mbps = mega bits per second
MBps = mega bytes per second
Kbps = kilo bits per second
KBps = kilo bytes per second

Thus "MB" is eight times faster than "Mb" and "KB" is eight times faster than "Kb".
The original poster was getting a 1.1MB/second transfer rate which equates to a 8.8Mb/sec transfer rate which is in line with a 10Mbps connection. As all broadband and WAN technologies are serial (though there is some parallelization possible) in nature they are measured in bits not Bytes per second.
