Glad to hear you are happy with X1800XT.

Don't try Omega Drivers, these Drivers are getting pathetic now, I just got rid of Omega also, I had few issues with AOE III, Official 5.12 Catalysts by ATI are pretty good I woud like to stick with them. Also, PcGeek, don't you have any option like to enable 'Parallax Occlusion Mapping'? in CCC, ... or I guess its in-built feature.

I don't know why you are comparing 7800GTs SLI to X1800XT, in SLI, what I've heard that you could choose few Advanced Options for Image Quality (Like more AA & AF?), but not available for Single Card. Better Idea to Compare SLI Image Quality, would be to get Master X1800 and CrossFire Motherboard, then you'll notice 'DA' best Image Quality, especially in Super AA Mode in CrossFire.

Well as far as I know, you should be able to see better seperation in between Tiles or Ground, or Brick Walls, carefully examine the Textures, you'll find them very Crisp, and detail on Character's face etc.,, AF & AA is what ATI's speciality is, X1800XTs AA & AF is quite Advanced, you'll loose very less FPS at highest Resolution with AA & AF

X1800XT Shader ALUs are very efficient also, feeded by Ultra Threaded Dispatch Processor for maximum efficiency in Shader Calculations.

Also, about Overclocking, you will definately see consistent performance as you up the Clock & Memory Speed, the Overclocking 'Yeild' on X1K Series is definately better, just because X1K has fairly new Architecture and especially the Memory Controller being used on it with smart Arbitration Logic is totally new and is optimized for higher Clocks.

About OpenGL performance, well you could see it yourself, that ATI did a fantastic job in making Catalysts 5.12, download Catalysts 5.9 and you'll see with Catalysts 5.12, you'll notice more than 30% gains in OpenGL, just because of that new Algorithm for Memory Controller, and expect the performance with future Catalysts to rise up.

Stick with Official Catalysts 5.12 for now, you'll see true potential with Catalysts 6 Series. Especially that Memory Controller Tweak (or what we call new Algorithm for Arbitration Logic) & Dual Core CPU support is going to get very much better. Also keep an eye on X1800 Master, if you intend to use Multi Visual Processing, and that New, Powerfull RD580 CrossFire Chipset, you will love CrossFire, I gurantee :)

PC Geek, Catalyst 5.12s are official ATI drivers, also some modded drivers use shortcuts. So how was it running the 512 X1800XT, also how does the X1800XT 256 compare to the 512MB edition in performance, and is it worth the extra cash for a 256MB boost in ram?

512MB of VRAM is good, Textures are getting bigger, with 512MB Cards (And decent Core) you don't need 2GB of System Memory also.

Videsh, those are low Volume SKUs (7800GTX 512) is to extend the life of G70 against X1800XT, and will not be produced in mass quantities, you won't see 7800GTX 512MB in the Market after the release of G71. Asus X1800XT 'TOP' (Overclocked) Card already beats 7800GTX 512MB with 100-200 points in 3D Mark 05, and is almost for same price compared to 7800GTX 512.

And X1800XT 512MB is already been selling for $539 at Newegg.

Hey PCGEEK, glad to hear you like the x1800xt. It looks like a sweet card alright.

IMO the screenies posted look way better on the ATI, compared to the GTX512, that may be just the actual screen shots, but they do look better.

Sweet card.

Dont think I've seen HL2 look as good.

Is the stock cooler noisy when at 100%?

Nice one Supreet Virdi. And to add, I don't think ATI is making X1800XT with 256MB GDDR3 memory. All I've seen is 512MB cards.

And Australia has discusting card prices LOL, I thought Canada was bad LOL, so much for asking my family in Australia to maybe purchase & send me one.

Prices are crazy. The ATI RADEON X1800XT used to cost $635cad, now its selling for $685cad. But at least the Sapphire Radeon X1800XT is for a nice $629cad & selling quite well.

Reason for all this is probably because there is a demand for X1800XT w/ 512MB here in Canada. The 7800GT is selling better than the GTX & people just laugh at the $1,000 7800GTX 512MB version, and just turn to the 512MB X1800XT, because they want 512MB & not 256MB ;)

gunner stick with what ya got bro, i honestly think its worthwhile actually placing hard work into a piece of slow or obsolete hardware, It certain has worked out for me, but there is still 2 more things i can do to this laptop and thats overclock the CPU and also unlock the hidden pipes of the MR9800.

hey Super what do you think of the Laptop overclock i reached, actually the max stable speed i found to be is 430 (i think) course i probably need to open this system up and do a thorough cleaning of its insides(WHOA) and probably use AS5 or Ceramique on the CPU and vidcard. As i found out there is possible chance of Overclocking the CPU, and also unlocking 4-8 more pipes on this card (which in turn should allow even further clocks, possibly 500+ clocks! on a mobility part.

Yeah I agree Airman, (although if I had the cash I'd get one too, but missus would kill me lol) I've done a fair bit to the 6600gt, and I quite like the card, not exactly uber, but its not bad!

Nice screenies Dublin, I just wish, they could've put in little more effort for Single Player :(

Yeah the quality's not too bad, I think some are 2xAA, and some are 2xQ, cant really push it much further without sacrificing AF or other image/effect quality. Have AF on 8x (or whatever the max in game is, not through drivers)

I agree Supreet, single player is nothing more than practice for multi player. I believe the xbox & PS versions have a more structured single player mode, with campaigns & goals etc

Ok now for your guys help. here is the problem. This card has down clocks built into the bios. So when in 2D it downclocks and re sets clocks set in ATI tool. So is what im looking for is a custom bios that will set defaults 690 1600 all the time with none of this bulls**t down clocking crap. So I can use the ATI tool beta now.

So point me in a direction of a custom bios and the flash tool to do it with.

Its a ATI Radeon X1800XT 512.

You mean to say, it Downclocks automatically?, looks to me an issue with ATI Tool, have you tried the Radlinker? I don't think you'll will be able to find Custom BIOS for it, you'll have to do it manually. Re-install the Drivers, before you install Radlinker.

Also, try to look for different BIOS, is your Card built by ATI (BBA)?

>> Re: PCGEEK takes on ATI X1800XT 512
Maybe this is the reason why the card run cool at idle because since it is not really doing anything hard that it automatically downshift to a lower clock and when more juice is needed like 3D apps it kicks it into full speed. Just like Speed Stepping. I think a new custom bios for this line of card is going to hard to come by because of it being so new.
