PCGEEK, I take it that it resets the 3d clocks also?? Thats a pain.

Try using RivaTuner, and before anyone asks, its for ATI cards aswell. Great program and can be set to reinstate clocks on restart, so you never lose the settings

HI deaf Guy

Your Quote:
"PCGEEK, your grammar and your frequently misspelled is in serious need of deform." Unquote"

Do you mean "Your grammar and misspeling is in serious need of reform" ????

You split the infinitive, using YOUR twice in the same sentence, then you misspelled the last word. using the incorrect word.

Leave the guy alone, he is very interesting as always.........and so are you from time to time

Now help to answer his question

Is what happens is as soon as i exit a 3D aplication the card downclocks likes its made to to the 2D setings and re sets the clocks i just set.

Also It dont want to overclock past 690 1.6 If i go past that it locks up ? The ATI overdrive offers them setings as max and works fine. Could be thats all she will do. I change the volt setings in ATI tool. Dont help stability much.

All ATI X1800XT 512 cards are Stock 625 1500 D3D and 600 1400 2D. That down steping is what re sets the clocks in ATI tool. If I use ATI overdrive it works good. I can lock it at 690 1600 D3D and it defaults back 600 1400 2D.

Victor, you misspelled 'misspelling' wrong!!

PCGEEK, I thought you were using a new spell checker in firefox??

J/K Guys!! i thought this was a hardware forum, not a bloomin' spelling/grammer assessment??

G G, AFAIK most 3d cards have 2d/3d settings, so you're not running your card at 'full throttle' 24/7. It helps keep the card cool, my 6600gt does it too. But my clocks ALWAYS go to my 3d setting when in 3d mode.

PCGEEK, I wouldnt recommend editing the BIOS for constant speeds, because I'm not sure if its the cards BIOS or the drivers that determine when it should be in either 3d/2d mode, and hence you could cause major problems running the card in 3d mode all the time, and burn it out.

Just get some software that wont reset the clocks.

It may be a driver problem, I remember one of the geforce drivers caused the same thing to happen to me.

Try RivaTuner though, its a really good program.

PC Geek,

Sorry I missed your PM last night. My question is, at the end of the day, with the X1800XT massively overclocked, does it or does it not completely whack a 7800 GTX SLI ?

If it doesn't, then how does it even begin to compete against a 7800GTX512, let alone an SLI system?

And to those of you who bitch and moan about price/performance ratios, either you have the best card or you don't. If you want to dwell in the top end, you don't care about cost. In a face off, p**sing contest, either you have the best machine or you don't.

As far as I see, it remains inconclusive whether a Crossfire X1800XT can even match a 7800GTX512 SLI system, let alone conclusively wh00p it.

So far, its still King Kong Kards for me.

In Gamer performance from what I have seen . FPS and quality This X1800XT clearly matches my 7800 GT OC SLI. Of coarse benchmarks say different but as far as games go. It holds its own quite well. For a single GPU option i would recommend it over 7800 Gt OC SLI any day. Cheaper and offers killer in game performance.

Now if all your wanting is bragging rights and Benchmark scores. ya go SLI. Although you have to admit . 2 7800 GT OC in SLI are around 12850 to 13000 tops in 3dmark05 and 1 X1800XT is around 9850 to 10k Stock cooling to stock cooling. The X1800XT Single GPU holds its own.

3Dmark03 2 7800 GT OC in SLI = 27k to 30k Where X1800XT = 18.6 k to 19k . The SLI has a 8k to 10k lead.

No. I could care less about benchmarks. If not, I would have already been on Vapochill and 4800+. I can't tell you the number of times I have printed out and looked at the brochure. I would never have bought the 7800GTs if I cared about benchmarks. If I were so adamant, hell I wouldn't really care what the Mrs. says. I would buy whatever I want from newegg/zipzoonfly in an instant, and assemble the greatest and most expensive PC ever heard... it can't cost that much... at least not compared to what Santa brought my wife for Christmas.

I have already spent an ungodly amount of money on my IO system, which now officially costs more than most complete 7800GT SLI systems lol

I hardly get to play games, and when I do, its been BF2 for me almost all the time. I do enjoy my machine immensely. All I'm saying is that I am kind of satisfied with what I have, and there seems no compelling reason to me to buy a X1800XT, unless I want to buy two of them, which I am still considering.

However, when I weigh a Crossfire X1800XT versus an SLI 7800GTX512, it is clear to me, and just me, which setup I would choose, even though there'll probably be a $400 price difference.

Anyway, the 7800GTX512 will be phased out in February to make way for the G71. The relationship manager in my bank spoke to the company two days ago. I told him to ask that question heh.

I am not saying that I want new cards. Well, I really want Quadros :) but that is a different story. However, if I were to want new cards, there is no question which direction I would go.

Ok so now onto business.

Now we take a look at far cry

FPS where a dead match to 2 7800 Gt OC in SLI.

30 FPS low 65 FPS max with all eye candy on in drivers and game.

Now for quality . I think you will find ATI held its own here.

I'm sure that its the equal if not better than 7800GT SLI. I am not arguing that. Who cares if its the equal of 7800GT SLI? It should be and it must be. For crying out loud, the 7800 video cards have been out for 6 months now, and the 7800GT four months.

This is ATI's best and most expensive video card. The 7800GT is Nvidia's third best video card.

I want to see mano-e-mano X1800XT versus 7800GTX512. Single versus single. Double versus double. I want to see ATI spank the Nvidia. Ain't seen that yet.

I am not saying Nvidia wins. All I am saying is that ATI doesn't win. Besides that, its all academic. I cannot find a Crossfire video card, and I genuinely tried 20 minutes ago at Compusa.

I was stupid enough to not remember that ATI is set up differently from Nvidia. I was almost about to buy two X1800XTs and I would have been massively disappointed when I got home tonight.

Well, there ain't no GTX512 or even regular GTXs available to me, so I should STFU, but I really was close to a $1,200 disappointment.

ATI is better at picture quality. It ought to be. People like Supreet have been spouting that rhetoric for ages. Now it has to deliver, and it does deliver.

I never said Nvidia delivers more picture quality. It doesn't. Maybe the same at best, but probably not. What I know is that the Nvidia is the faster card (and I am not talking about the 7800GT).

The 7800GT/GTX is old news. X1800XT vs. 7800GTX512. Stock vs. stock. Overclocked vs. overclocked (and I'm not talking nitrogen vs. water).

My only question is why are you using TinyPic? Their hosting service has too many limitations to really post effective screenshots.

I think Ian Yeoh, has it right. We already know that NVIDIA won the performance crown with the monster 7800GTX 512MB. And we all figured out that ATI's X1800XT is better in image quality, but not by a large margin. Most of the time your eyes can't even see the difference.

But I do give a lot of respect to ATI's R520 for performing the way it does with only 16 Pipes vs. NVIDIA's 24 Pipes :)

It all has to do with drivers, and right now, ATI's X1000 cards are new & in Jan

Super XP,

Kudos to you for your honest assessment. Finally someone has the gumption to spell it the way it is.

Now, the question is how many folks have the stomach to buy $1,600 worth of video cards. Not that many, but Inotice that Newegg and ZipZoomFly are sold out.

Anyway, the X1800XT is a fabulous card, and its even better in Crossfire. Let's leave it at that.

PCGEEK...in answer to your question about keeping the X1800XT at constant oc...when i use ati tray tools...(not ati tool) it gives you an option to set clocks for 2d and 3d mode....so all you have to do is select the oc profile that you want for either 2d or 3d (or both in your situation) and it should stay at those clocks all the time...

hope that helps...i dont no if its used in the newer version of ATT because the one i have is pretty old but it does the job

And thank you Ian Yeoh for your kind words.

The funny thing is that the X1800XT & 7800GTX at its high price won't lose there value any time soon. And when ATI & NVIDIA release there R580 & G71, you can always e-bay the X1800XT & 7800GTX for a nice price ($150 to $200 off what you paid) & get the new stuff.
