That sounds more like a virus than spyware. go to Housecall.trendmiro.com and have it scan your system.

Yes, I did have a virus but removing it did not fix the problem.
I still can't get into task manager.

Hello Surpher 805
Try as our friends suggest the various methods ie: Spy Bot Search and destroy etc:

However smss.exe is an essential file in Windows, but is vulnarable to attack by trogans and similar infections.
The link below explains it more fully, as removing the file is not the answer, it's the infection that has to be removed.

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/smss/

There are several tools available on this site and many other sites, and most virus companies have updated the varying names of the trojans very recently.
Read the text thoroughly first.

Good Luck

Sorry to jump the post but ive got a prob on my server.

It keeps say "spyware detected download a ~Spyware app here" well its definatly
spayware and i add/removed a prog called spyware doctor. This also was poping up which has
stoped now. But i still get this popup.

Ive used Norton AV and spysweerper and its still there. It also has changed my background with one
saying spyware detected.

Its driving me mad. I cant even change my background as its blocking me.

what programs have you used?
I use Norton (yes it does scan for spyware)
Adaware
and Spybot search and destroy.

I also use Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer" which locks down the registry and you have to authorize every change thats made (a small pain when installing programs but well worth it)
and Zone Alarm Pro is an added bonus.

To get back to you question:

If you disable the windows firewall you will probably be able to get rid of that red "X".
