I am totally P'd off, I was designing the new computer systems website and got about 80% through building it and then deleted it by accident.. DURRRR!!!!
Well here the plan that you can win something :)
Yeah you've guessed it, I am looking for someone to design my computer system website.
Oh yeah you're going to want to know what you win.. well I was thinking one of them new DVD RW 16X Dual layer, RAM yada yada drives. OR a paypal cash transfer.. which ever suit the winner..and you will get marked as one of GTWCMT's website designers - meaning that you can get full pay for working on website that are designed by GTWCMT.

What you have to do.
Basically design a website yourself that is easy to do things with (layout) you then need to make:

Index page - consisting of borders, header and main body that spans down

Standard page - So I can chuck info into these sort of gen info page

Computer systems page - header - single border( nav or news) top image pace holder and main body text section and a table section below for the hardware components. This page should hold a buy button or goto shop and a little text or image part at the bottom so that I can put the bench result and other info on.

You don't need to add any text or system images ( just header and buttons)

What it should look like.
I'm looking for gamers and well as business clients for servers and workstations so it can be a little funky but not a "dark" site. Pages should be quite small as there are loads of people on the website all of the time so bandwidth is a consideration. a clean modern feel and not bulked like mine is currently.
You can use, SQL, PHP, ASP and HTML to build your design. Dynamic pages are fine to link into the forum or latest news moduals of the main website.

When will the winner be told?
This isn't a on going competition, I will give you designers some time to come up with some website designs so that its fair to people who work and don't have alot of time to do things like this. I will then look at the websites and pick a winner, I will post here when I have found someone/a site that I like. You should receive you're winnings /present/gift in around 10 days are I have told you or announced the winner.

Where can I host a website?
there are lots of place that you can host a site, yahoo mail account holder will have a tripod site included or any where else. try http://www.sitesled.com/ as well

What to do If I have a question? You can email from my website - yahoo.com account- or web design and my URL
I will be popping back here now and then to see whats going on.

Good luck

I could give you everything you need to use the template I configured from the base subSilver template included with phpBB. It's simple to update (copy, paste, alter) and very efficent (only uses 9 images; 5 of which are optional). It uses some PHP, HTML, and some of the advanced stuff like polls (uses Advanced Polls 2) and petition uses MySQL.

You can see the current design here:

GT, I dont need a forum its just the actual website pages, I tink I know what your getting at
I have a portal for the forum - http://www.gtwcmt.co.uk/forum/mods/phpbb_fetch_all/examples/portal.php
I think that it should be more of a site than a interactive full of stuff site,..if you know what I mean.

I have found that people like simple sites that are easy to follow, and some people like sites that look good, I must admit, most people use the site for general info then they order a totally different system when they email me.

The new website will be centred around, the Ultima, the GTVS computers,, Video and Audio ending systems some servers and workstations with the later two being very limited as I will be holding more on bespoke system design. I am also going to do some media center PC's using ITX systems right up to big one.

Which is why the site has to be flexible, becuase I will be changing it on a regular basis with news links on the home page. - a bit like the gaming computers index.php page and index2.html but more together..if that makes sence..

All I did was strip the visual elements from the subSilver design and applied it to the main page. I break all my websites into three basic html files: header, footer, and content. Anything that visually appears above or to the left of the content is in the header file, all page specific content appears in the content file (the index.php, downloads.php, etc.), and everything that visually appears to the right or below the content is in the footer. I always base my sites on this simple principle to make updating a breeze and keep everything visually uniform. More over, the pages resulting from the template usually ends up around 10 KB so it loads fast for dial uppers.

I can give you the essentials if you wish to have a look.

not really the things that Im looking for.

I see what your doing, but I want more of a graphical site simalar to the old site, having things like forum bits in is OK but these are only minor parts to make the site look "funky" and not just standard.

The site doesnt have to be built in PHP as I can then host it on other sites so I takes the load off my server

http://www.widowpc.com/ isnt to bad, too much text though

Hope that helps

I noticed a common point on all those sites: they all have a horizontal main navigational bar and also a suplemental vertical navigational bar. If you wish to have a main navi, what options would you want on it?

Well I see where they are going, If on the top you have the about , contact etc, then on the drop or side menu, you would have, the computers in sections
Ultima
Gaming
Servers
Video editing
Audio Editing
Which then sub divided to the actual systems, with the header leading off to a main info page for that range of system sort of what Ive done on the existing site, there is lots of free java for doing the menus, so don't trouble yourself to much..

Put it this way, Design a website that sells computers that you like and is easy to use.for both client and webmaster. simple as that.

Any way Off home to send time with the other half and daughter..
Back later

Right now I'm picturing a metallic theme with a main image at the top, a main navigational bar under that, a menu on the left (idea below), content on the right, and a copyright deal at the bottom.

For the menu, it could be done two ways, either dynamic or static. Dynamic would involve main buttons which, when you put the mouse over, would drop to show the sub buttons under it. Static would basically be the same as dynamic but all of them would always be expanded. Which would you prefer?

Also, how do most of your clients connect to the internet (56k, ISDN, Cable/DSL, etc.)?

I would highly reccommend a website building tool call netobjects fusion. It takes minutes to build a basic shell of a website, plus you can insert some really good features with little or no special knowledge at all.

read the first post about the fourth line down.. begining, oh yeah .

Dynamic may cause issues especially with changing systems, I can change some systems around once every 6 months, this may be a remake of a exsisting system or a new system.

Just build and we will see.

Rory, I would highly suggest using PHP. It makes updaing about 10x easier. Also, please do not use the size tags on images. It makes them look ugly, and take too long to download.

I would take a whack, but it seems that GT is on it. Not to mention that I don't have that much time.

Take a look at my site. Obviously there isn't too much there yet, but I'm going to work on that one of these days.

Its a little old-fashioned as far as colors and layout, but I'm going after the 'Dell' crowd.

Here's what I have done so far:

Change the diag=0 to diag=1 (diag=diagnostics) to see the table layout if you want.

Rory,

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to website design, as can be seen by my first try:
http://www.ecosse.ne1.net

Thanks for starting this thread, I'll be watching this for the ideas it spawns as design is an area of interest to me.

If the guys n gals on here are half as good at web design as they are at problem resolution, you'll be sorted.
