  Dead Compaq Presario R3000 Laptop

Can anybody help me please?

The computer will not power up. I have checked the output from the charger and it measures 18.8V and the battery voltage reads 16V (off load). With the charger not plugged in the 'ON' light is illuminated when the 'ON' button depressed but not when the button is released. When the charger is pluged in the power light on the front of the unit is illuminated for approx 5 seconds and then goes out otherwise the unit is completely dead!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if the cpu has failed. The voltages that you talk about are within operating range. Unless the light on the power ac adapter goes out when plugged in. If this happens, then the motherboard is shorted.
Good luck,

Turn your Presario notebook off and disconnect the AC power cord. Turn the notebook upside down, locate the battery release lever and release the battery. Take the battery out of the notebook and set it aside.
