Hi, i have a battery problem on my Compaq Presario 17XL 470..
Every time I disconnect my AC Adapter (power supply), my computer works like for five minutes and then shutdown without any worning and etc..
If I disconnect my computer from the AC Adapter it says in the battery tray icon that there is 100% of battery.... 99%.. 98%, and like in the 97% or 96, it shutdown.. (like when you take out the power cable on your Desktop computer...

What to do ?
is it a program problem, or a hardware? (battery).. please help me!

p.s. , I'm using Windows 2000 Pro..
THANKS!

Hello, if battery is over 6 months or so it has probably developed a false memory. Most of us use the mains and sometimes the battery. Over a period of time the battery stops holding its charge. Best thing to do is drain the battery completely. Leave it in standby or something that will drain the battery slowly until its dead. Fully charge it and then see if its made any difference. Worked with my Toshiba. If that fails then its probably time for a new battery. Hope this helps

I agree with Rich. Completely discharge the battery and then fully recharge it. If it is false memory, that will get erased when the battery is completely dead.

Does the battery have a meter on it. On my compaq laptop the battery has a meter where you push a button and the meter will show how charged the battery is. It may show how charged the batter really is, compared to what win2k is showing you. The battery doesn't sound like its charging at all. A new battery may not be the fix (considering they are like 180 bucks to buy brand new). I had a similar problem with my Presario 1200.. and it ended up being the power connector inside the lap top was broken. I had to take it all apart and glue/solder it back together.

this problem could be due to the type of battery fitted. If it is a nicad battery these devolop a "memory" depending on how they have been "used", if the battery is not fully discharged regularly then it wil never discharge fully as the bottom end of the memory will say it's fully discharged even when it's not. Get a lithion ion battery as these have no memory or speak to a friendly electronic engineer and get them to discharge it using a suitable resistor. failing these steps you can get your battery pack cells changed by a competent person, sorry no details.
