You're probably like... what the hell? But I was just wondering what everyone scored on the Windows Vista performance analyzer thingy. You'll need Vista (RC1!!) installed to do this, and being that it's a pretty stable (and awesome) operating system, I would highly recommend getting it and putting it on a secondary partition just for the fun of it. You can download the ISO (to burn to DVD) here:

http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm

It's purdy. You can download the ISO from Microsoft, burn it to a DVD and use it for free for 14 days. After that 14 day period, you'll need a serial key which only registered "Customer Preview Program" participants will recieve via email. This key will permit you to run Windows Vista as a full operating system until June 1st, 2007. At this date (09-08-2006), however, Microsoft is not permitting new registrations for the Customer Preview Program, but allegedly intends to open the program for registration in the coming days. Keep a close eye on the site below to see when you can register for the program:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx

Your "system type" shows "32 bit operating system" ???

Can you post a short summary of or link to what the numbers mean?

In Build 5342 I scored a 4. In Beta 2 I scored a 3. Same system no changes at all.

Haven't tried RC1 yet. Maybe I will. They changed the scoring thing though, cause now they got decimals. They didn't have them decimals before.

Pickle, you know you can activate it right? I think they give you until a certain date if you activate. You can get a key off of microsoft's site. Although I read on Digg they ran out of keys...lmfao

Some info on what the figures are supposed to tell you about your system, and possible problems with it:

The authors present some interesting issues and questions.

Anyone know if the BETA 2 keys will work with RC1? Cause I have a BETA 2 key that registered Beta 2 until July 1, 2007. I wonder if it will work for RC1. I have only used the key once, and they said you can use it 10 times, or on up to 10 computers.

Yes, it will work - that's what I used. I don't think you can get keys specifically for RC1 right now.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but from what Ive been reading all over the place, the WPR tool was designed by Microsoft to tell you whether your PC is "suitable" for running Vista. But, the only way you can get the tool (so far) is to install Vista? Is that correct?

Here's some info on the tool:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/topics/vista/winsat.mspx

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2006/03/16/windows-performance-ra...-pc-sucks/

Sounds like its more to tell you what to upgrade in your PC, then to tell you if your PC will run Vista. They want people to buy Vista and then upgrade. Not download the program, see if it runs, and decide not to buy Vista because thier PC got a low score.

Yep. I'm impressed, quite frankly, my computer hooked up to Windows update and bam! drivers installed.

So then Pickle, how come you didn't use your Beta 2 key?

I didn't have a Beta 2 key. I'm not yet a registered member of the Customer Preview Program. :D

A number of articles state they are desiging it to basically replace the "System Requirements" list that's usually placed on software boxes....sort of a global solution to the problem of matching hardware to software. For example, "to use Vista, your machine should score a 5 or better" kind of thing. There's a separate tool (according to Microsoft) for determining upgrade path requirements.

I guess it'll just take time for all this to filter out.

According to Microsoft, it's a sliding scale that will continue to increase as technology improves. At the time the http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/topics/vista/winsat.mspx was written, it was 5. They do note that the features of the tool are subject to change.

Also see http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060529-6934.html and others. According to this article, the highest rating possible at the time was 5.9. Search on the various names that are being used to describe the tool and you'll find some intresting articles.

Edited to add:
See post by "Super XP Sep 12, 2006, 08:23 PM" reporting a score of 5.2. The sliding has started.

I just got an email from the nice guys at Microsoft and it turns out I am part of the Windows Vista Customer Preview Program (CPP). They even emailed me my Beta 2 key again and said to use the same key for RC1. How nice of them to remind me what my key is. I finished downloading RC1 and burned it onto a DVD, so I'll be trying it out within the next few days. I let everyone know what I think about it. If you remember I did write a short review for Vista Beta 2: http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/57848/ . Although after I wrote the review it turned out that that build was not the official Beta 2 build so that review was acctually based on a Pre-Beta 2 build. And even that pre-beta 2 build was pretty good. Beta 2 was even better. Can't wait to get RC1 installed. And I'll let you know my RC1 score once I get it up.
