Hello, I just recently built a computer and am very satisfied about the results. The only part I might have some consideration about upgrading is my processor. I currently use a 2.4 3800 Athlon 64. It works great!, but It didn't do so well on 3D MARK ( a computer test program). I was wondering what better processor I can obtain with the 100$ mark. Is my 2.4CPU already as good as it can be and I'm asking for to much on the product? or I just have to go higher to a 2.6 for better results?

Thanks =)

What are your videocard and ram? Can really say much unless you tell us that.

your CPU is fine, 3D mark is not a true performance measurment, youd have to run apps and games yourself for that determination.

AMD Athlon XP-M 2500+ (133x14= 1867MHz) (209x11= 2299MHz)

The only suggestion I could make with regard to your CPU would be to go for a dual core of equivalent or faster clock speed.

However, you'll want about double your budget to spend.

No CPU around $100 will be better than the one you have.

So what it didnt do well in 3dMark? Its just a freaking benchmark, thats all it does. As long as your getting good performance in games or other apps, their is no point in upgrading.

Yup, benchmarks are used to make older/mainstream stuff look pathetic next to the new/enthusiast stuff. PC Mark especially is guilty of this because they intentionally test brand new technologies that mainstream hardware doesn't support. Upgrading your processor would grant little to no benefits unless you upgraded to a dual core. In terms of game performance, dual cores provide little to no benefit in most games.

What is your video card Jonie and what 3d Mark did you used? Maybe your video card isnt that good and its bottlenecking your cpu thats why your not satisfied with your score. Maybe the video card is the one you should be upgrading depending in your needs.

dual cores allow for you to do multitasking more efficiently so to speak, in comparison there is little to no performance gain in comparison of a 3800 SC and 3800DC Even my system i seen no difference in speed between my current system and the top end system i helped my friend build that had a 4200+ 1 gig top end ram and a 7800 GTX, as of normal everyday stuff, like opening apps and booting up. Games were maybe slightly better but i noticed some lagging in games he was playing that i played and i had no lag and we were at the same resolution and detail level.

You are wasting your time with upgrades.

Guess what. 3D Mark 2007 is about to be released. Everything in the market except for quad core and G80 SLI together is going to look pathetic.

Keep your money until you can buy a real upgrade. A budget cpu is going to do nothing for you.

you'll need about $150 to $175 and get a X2 3800+ or a 165 or 170 opteron.
Better yet a E6300 but then youll need a mobo and ram also

Love those benchmarks ey? They brought them out just so they can tell us that our 6 month old computer is garbage & that we need a complete overhaul LOL, ya right, its a money scam I say.

Don't worry about the benchmarks, though a Dual Core would bring you up one level.

Good Luck

Im running on an Opteron 165 and I must say I am very impressed with this CPU. Stock speed is 1.8GHz, but it overclocks to 2.75GHz without any voltage increase. Im running dual prime right now as I type this at 2.8GHz with a cpu voltage increase of 1.4 from 1.35.

I know this isn't helping the original poster but is an Intel Pentium D 920 @ 2.80GHz for $152.99 CDN worth it? I can't afford anything more than that.

I think this would be more useful in a server type environment or a situation when an individual need the use of multiple OS and multiple virtual cpu within a single system.... but in a regular desktop for the normal user..... nawwhhhh....
