Whatever you do, dont get a Motorola V3X

I've had nothing but trouble with mine. Currently on replacement number 2 (3rd phone)

And the USB connection for the headphones cuts in and out randomly when trying to listen to songs on it.

Quite embarrasing when you're sitting on a packed bus and it decides to switch to the speaker for no apparent reason.

I still use Sony Ericsson S700i. It's pretty old, but hell, back in the days, it was top of the line. Even now only some come close to comparing to it. It has all sort of connections: 3 networks, IR, Bluetooth, pretty good CMOS for the inbuilt camera. Never had a problem with it. It dropped in prices now, so if you're low on budget, I'd definitely recommend you to give it a try. Won't regret. =)

I have LG's "The V" VX9800
http://somewhatfrank.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/vx9800.gif

Best damn phone ever if you send a lot of text messages. Tough as nails too. I've dropped this thing on concrete from chest height about 3 different times, and it still functions perfectly. The camera is pretty decent quality, takes 1280x960 pictures at most. Uses and mini-SD card, plays MP3 and WMA. The only complaint people might have (like my girlfriend when she borrowed it to call a friend) is that it may feel a bit big when you're actually using it as a phone. However, if you flip it open in a call, it goes to speaker phone. I just set it on my computer desk, and talk while I'm working or whatever.

Highly recommended. :)

Motorola V360

Worst: Bluetooth keeps crapping out even with earpiece 10cm from phone (apparently a COMMON Motorola bluetooth problem) Have tried multiple earpieces. Don't have problem on my Nokia with same Motorola HA500 or HA700 earpiece.

Almost Worst: MAXIMUM video capture length about 60 seconds, even with 1gb memory card. And, that's a low resolution capture...less time allowed for high-resolution capture. This is a stupid design limitation. Have to save current capture, then restart vid capture from scratch for each 60 seconds of video.

Best: Removable 1gb micro-SD memory, which I can manipulate vids, pics, ring-tones, etc. by inserting in PC. No need for connector or special software for basic stuff.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Worst (for virtually ALL cellphones) : The really TINY font used to display the incoming call phone number. The display has room for MUCH larger font, why don't they use one?

are you looking for a "free" phone that comes with a contract?
are you looking to buy a phone, and sign up for a service?
what's your budget?
do you want a camera on it?
do you want to listen to music with it?
do you have use for bluetooth, IR, etc?
do you have interest in a smart phone?
do you need to use it with winter/work gloves on?
does it need to be durable? (are you going rock climbing with it?)
does it need to be water proof? (are you going swimming with it?)
do you need GPS/GIS mapping on it?
do you need GPS locator on it?
do you frequently use voice dialing or speaker phone?
do you travel to europe?
do you travel to asia?

these are all questions that you need to answer yes or know or maybe to... then make a checklist, then go into every store and give it to them.. also email it to every sales department of each company, and they'll send you a list of what they offer that best suits your needs..

Jeez, Phil, give him the 3rd degree, why don't yeh! :P

I like my phone. I haven't tried the BlueTooth with it, simply because I don't use headsets or anything. I'm not lazy. I hold the damned phone up to my ear like a man!!

I have Cingular service through the retail company I work for ($25 for 5MB internet, 1000 text, 200 multimedia text [pics, video], and 2000 anytime minutes, but no nights and weekends) and I love it.

Why?
1) Great selection of phones
2) Any new phones they get are, for the most part, brand new to the market (carrier exclusive, like when the Razr first came out)
3) Great coverage. I only drop calls if I go into a brick building (damn college. Why couldn't it have been made out of straw?)
4) No roaming charges (if you spend >60% of your time on the network they own) and you get Rollover minutes
---And the PRIME reason I <3 Cingular
CUSTOMER SERVICE THAT ISN'T OUTSOURCED!!!!

For eff's SAKE I hate calling into Sprint for a customer, just to get a guy named "Bob" with a very, very thick foreign accent. Nothing is harder than trying to get a mumbling, uncheerful, Indian-accented guy to read you the lock codes and MSID for a phone. F*cking outsourcing.

As far as phones go, I had the Motorola Rokr at one point. Sound was great, iTunes kinda' blew nuts (slow ass**t), but it was a tough little bastard. I've thrown it against car frames, tossed it onto engine blocks, dropped it on concrete... Even had a go-kart run over it once (I work summers at an amusement park :/ ). I recently upgraded to an LG CU500. Awesome camera. On 3G networks, it's pretty fast (not much noticeably faster than EDGE, but still fast) for downloads. It has a fairly decent camera, and it's an overall stable phone with a great OS.

If you're looking for a smaller phone, with the PDA style Windows 5.0 OS, however, You might think about giving the Cingular 3125 a shot (you might be able to buy an unlocked one on eBay; it's GSM, which I know is popular in Europe). It's a flip phone with Windows OS, Bluetooth (I think it has A2DP for stereo Bluetooth, IIRC), and it's got a great finish and it's pretty sturdy. I got to play with one when a customer came into the retail store I work at. I would've gotten one myself, but it was too expensive for me at the time (CU500 was $50 refurb online, as opposed to $200 after MIR for the 3125). Now I wish I'd had waited. Ah well.

So there's my schpeel.

Sincerely,
Kash
