URL's with a period after them are getting mussed up, so if you want to end a sentence with a URL, the period is being considered part of the address.

ie.

I really like the About Google page at http://www.google.com/intl/en/about.html.

These ads are extremely obnoxious, intrusive, and unwanted. They also get stuck indefinitely in attempting to load pagead2.googlesyndication.com... (as you can see in the bottom left of the picture). I would be very happy if these ads were gone for good because it has, on numerous occassions, made me seriously consider finding a different tech forum. At bare minimum, something needs to be done about them getting stuck.

Why not just get Ad block or something? I have no issues with Firefox and ad's on this website or anywhere else.

I don't get those ads, is it only U.S users?
I have no problems with this forum. Its original too, the layout isnt the standard one every other user has.

2nd'ed

i dont ever see the ads thanks to iepro, but i still get the (mostly blank) page, with the please wait for your page to load, then the countdown.. it's f**king annoying,, i usually just close the window and reply to a thread in another forum.

can't access HWA unless I use a proxy... lol

pfft ..f**k that! (almost sounds like work)

I don't think your superiors would agree to that statement. If they drive me nuts, they could very well drive passersby nuts too which means lower viewership and therefore, lower income.

It doesn't help that it blatantly lies saying "your page is loading" when in fact, it's only waiting for the ad to load...

Do you browse the site while not logged in? Because thats about the only time I ever see ads. Which I myself rarely do. Im usually always logged in. So when I get here, I have 0 ads. And yes, I can see your point of view for those who browse the site and aren't even a member.

I once went on this website on a computer with no adblock and it still had IE6 on it (so basically a typical average computer that a everyday person would have) and this site was almost unbearable with the ads between the posts and the annoying flash ads.

Easiest solution - I just instructed one of our ad agencies that I believe sells full-page ads to not run them on the site.

Don't think it's that bad, but there are many ads we do not show if you are logged in - one of the "registered user" perks of sorts.

Maybe that should be (if it isn't already) advertised -- so if a user is unregistered and seeing the ads, there could be a message next to it that says something like "Don't want to see these ads? Register at HWA today to remove them!" Maybe then some of those 1000+ anonymous users would become posting members. :)

I'm rarely ever not signed in so it is a problem either way.

Same thing here. I was really amazed at how many ads there really were.

Better how? I like the ones we have. They say "We're HWA, not some other cheap PHPBB or vBulletin driven site."

So I wonder if there is some kind of popup record? I went to this one site once looking for CD Covers, and it redirected me to some porno site. My pop-up blocker blocked 1300+ pop-ups in about 10 seconds, the time it took to hit the stop button on zone alarm. It was a friggin pop-up storm! <gf>

I know this is going to be a silly question, but are you sure this was done by a banner on HWA?

We are using very respectable ad agencies to manage our advertisements, so I doubt (hope not) that they would allow questionable ads. We don't allow any "popup" ads, only "pop-under" and those are supposed to be very limited and shown infrequently for each person.

I think this answer should be a part of some kind of FAQ :)
