Hi Guys,

Haven't been on here in an age. Glad to see its still as popular as ever.

Okay here we go. I am trying to fix a computer for a friend and after trying everything I know about Routers and Computers and the like I'm afraid I failed. However, I am at that stage where the beast cannot win. I must fix this problem, it is doing my head in, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

My friend would like to wirelessly network 2 pc's so they can share an internet connection.

1 Desktop running win xp home, 2.4gig, 256mb

1 laptop, running xp pro, 1.8gig, 256mb, wireless built in.

We have a Belkin usb g 802.11g wireless network adapter.
A netgear DG834G v3 wireless router

Now here is the brilliant part..... HE IS WITH........ A.O (Frickin) L for some unknown reason.

We also have a Bt voyager adsl modem which CAN connect to the net through AOL.

The desktop does not want to connect to the net through the wireless router at all.

The lap top will connect to the net through the router if it is connected to the laptop by by a cable.

The desktop always gets to the stage where it can see the router and apparently login but it can never connect to the net, the final hurdle.

On the NETGEAR router page I always get

NEGOTIATION INITIALIZATION - LCP
CONNECT TO SERVER - DISCONNECTED

When I hit TEST.

I'm using no encryption.

Anyway, I spent about 4 hours mucking around with it and I'm all out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

BT routers tend to be set up to work only with BT ADSL - who is the ISP? Are you sure it is a router with an onboard ADSL modem?

Thanks for the reply :-)

Its a NETGEAR router not a BT one, sorry I may not have been clear.

The BT adsl modem is just what AOL supplised in the first place. My friends pc manages to connect to AOL and the internet with the BT adsl modem but my friend now wants rid of the modem and to connect 2 pcs with the NETGEAR wireless router.
