This is a hands-on report, and I really hope that they fix as many of these issues as they can!!
Cross-posted from my blog: http://www.smashsworld.com/2007/06/1...suck-about.php

Today I went to the Apple store around 2PM EDT and waited for the iPhone with some friends that I'd had no idea would be there. I bought my phone, and was excited. Got home, couldn't get it to connect. After 15 minutes, realized that a new version of iTunes (7.3) had been released.

Neither 'Software Update' or iTunes itself had prompted me about it, so I ended up manually downloading from Apple.com -- problem solved. Got my content synced over (chose a few specific playlists, mail accounts, photo albums, and the "Unplayed" podcast criteria), and began exploring the iPhone's various features.

1. The overall lack of a [visible] filesystem, and web-browser limitations.
I want to be able to download things from the web on my phone (ringtones from indie bands, content-creations from Mobile17 or band-promotions at Mozes, images from websites that I want to save and open later on my desktop) -- Why did I pay for 8GB of space that I can't friggin use! Is this a joke?

Downloading music is not possible from the iTunes Store (not accessible on-the-go) or even just random websites. The same goes for ringtones, spreadsheets, and other files. One thing that it does do surprisingly well, though, is read PDFs!

There is also no flash support (yet) as many already are aware of, so no cartoons or games either.

thats dumb of them not to provide native flash support, since you know they only have an entire commercail based around how it can run YouTube videos....

Wait a minute... I didn't known until now. "iPhony" is actually the name for a iPhone lookalike skin for Palm OS created by someone. Unfortunately, Apple threaten to sue. And the program is no longer available! :( :|

Original download link of iPhony, read this legal statements there...

Yup. I've already broken a number of them on my PDA. Fortunately, I can replace the glass touch-screen with a very cheap readily available independently manufactured part. I could only cringe at how often I'd break the iPhone's panel given that I'd be fumbling more with it than my PDA.

I also just read that you can't even set/use the iPhone's CLOCK without phone service activation.

That sounds like it means if you decide to get a different phone or carrier, that all you have is a useless piece of plastic....no calendar, spreadsheets, document/photo/video viewer, no MP3...not even a $600 alarm clock???

John, how would the clock and the cell phone service stop the iPhone being a standalone device? I guess you can always use it as an iPod for music and medias, regardless whether you have the ATT service or not. Correct me, if I'm wrong.

In my opinion, Apple is going the wrong direction in pushing out a Phone device. They should have push out a standalone, full function handheld computer. Think UMPC. Or perhaps, that's their next step.

I am correcting you. You can't use it's Media playback features without activating it.

Wow, that's so bull. If the service terms are that strict, you'd think the iPhone would be less expensive because some of the costs would be covered simply because the service provider has so much control over the use of the iPhone.

That sucks... No service, no function?! What BS! I think the name iPhony is quite appropriate. ;)

I think some people would want an iPhone just to use as like a Pocket PC/Media Player without phone functions. But they can't cause you gotta activate it.

I don't blame Apple for their high prices. If consumers are willing to pay twice what a product is worth, then by all means sell it for twice its worth. From a business aspect, Apple is very smart. They are selling a device worth maybe $300+/- for $599 with a 2 year contract. Good for them. But I ain't buying one.

At $600 bucks, you can buy 2 Palm TX and still have some cash left. The TX has a large beautiful display, that has the same resolution (320 x 480) as the iPhone's display and can do horizontal panning as well. You can do anything you can do with a PDA: WiFi, Bluetooth, calendar, sketch notes, brower, email, video, pics, music, SD card storage, Office files, PDF, etc, and not to mention plenty of free software. I got one and like it very much.

Want a PDA and a phone combined, get a Palm Treo, you get the best of both worlds, and still left with some cash. Like Pocket PC? There are plenty of devices at fraction of that price.

I think the iPhony is a dead end street, despite of all the marketing hypes. Now we know what the hype is about.. enough talking about it. ;)

The iPhone is still cheaper than a few really good SmartPhones, but you can also get smart phones with the same features for $200 less than the iPhone.

I prefer Windows Mobile to Palm OS, but thats just me. Both are superior to the iPhone's OS though. I have a Dell Axim X30, and with a 4GB (or 8GB, do they make them?) SD card and phone functionality it would totally own the iPhone.
